Protoveratrines A and B increase sleep apnea index in Sprague-Dawley rats.

The action of protovertarines A and B, which stimulate carotid sinus baroreceptors and vagal sensory endings in the heart as well as pulmonary bed, were assessed on spontaneous and postsigh central sleep apneas in freely moving Sprague-Dawley rats. During the 6-h recording period, animals were simultaneously monitored for sleep by using electroencephalogram and electromyogram recordings, for respiration by single-chamber plethysmography, and for blood pressure and heart period by using radiotelemetry. After administration of 0.2, 0.5, or 1 mg/kg sc of protoveratrines, cardiopulmonary changes l

Obstructive Sleep Apnea Is Associated with Newly Diagnosed Gestational Diabetes Mellitus.

Rationale: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is associated with increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, including gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). GDM is a significant cause of maternal and infant morbidities. Assessing these risk factors concurrently may facilitate both the identification of women at GDM risk and the initiation of GDM prevention strategies. Objectives: To investigate whether SDB events, including SDB in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and other sleep parameters, are associated with increased risk of GDM and to evaluate the performance of the models investigating associ

Effects of nasal continuous positive airway pressure on apnoea index and sleep in infants.

OBJECTIVE: We examined the effectiveness of nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) for treatment of sleep apnoea in infants. METHODOLOGY: We studied five infants who all had significant central and mixed apnoea and severe sleep fragmentation. Polysomnographic recordings were performed on 2 consecutive nights in these infants. One night was used as a control study and during the second night nasal CPAP was applied throughout the night. RESULTS: Nasal CPAP significantly reduced apnoea in each infant, with the apnoea index (apnoeas/h) decreasing from 65.6 +/- 14.6 during the control s

Status dissociatus after surgery for tegmental ponto-mesencephalic cavernoma: a state-dependent disorder of motor control during sleep.

After surgery for a tegmental ponto-mesencephalic cavernoma, a patient developed sleep-related excessive fragmentary myoclonus, diffuse myoclonic jerks, simple quasipurposeful movements of the limbs, and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behaviour disorder as motor features of status dissociatus, a condition in which elements of one state of being (wake, NREM and REM sleep) pathologically intrude into another.

[Narcolepsy and sudden onset of REM periods after nocturnal awakenings].

The objective of this study was to evaluate polysomnographic data, and especially the sudden onset of REM periods that occur after spontaneous awakenings during the night as characteristics of narcolepsy. We evaluated 148 consecutive patients with excessive daytime somnolence, except for those with sleep apnea. After clinical evaluation, all-night polysomnographic recording and multiple sleep latency test, 55 were diagnosed as narcoleptics and 93 were grouped as non-narcoleptics. The mean age of narcoleptics was 42.9 +/- 14.4 years old and the non-narcoleptics were 40.3 +/- 13.5 years old. Pol

Effects of rapid tryptophan depletion on sleep electroencephalogram and mood in subjects with partially remitted depression on bupropion.

Serotonin has been implicated in both sleep and mood regulation. When central serotonin was depleted with a tryptophan-free amino acid drink (TFD), some studies have reported that the antidepressant benefits were reversed in partially remitted patients treated with SSRIs. Other studies showed that the TFD increased rapid eye movement (REM) sleep in both normal males and in remitted depression patients on selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) without affecting mood. In this study, we administered a TFD to patients with remitted depression who were being treated with bupropion, an anti

Sleep disturbance in schizophrenia.

Insomnia is a common symptom in schizophrenia, although it is seldom the predominant complaint. Sleep-onset and maintenance insomnia is a characteristic feature of schizophrenic patients regardless of either their medication status (drug-naive or previously treated) or the phase of the clinical course (acute or chronic). Regarding sleep architecture, the majority of studies indicate that stage 4 sleep and rapid eye movement (REM) latency are reduced in schizophrenia, whereas REM sleep duration tends to remain unchanged. Insomnia in schizophrenic patients could be partly related to the presumed

Ventromedial prefrontal theta activity during rapid eye movement sleep is associated with improved decision-making on the Iowa Gambling Task.

Recent research is beginning to reveal an intricate relationship between sleep and decision-making. The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) is a unique decision-making task that relies on the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC), an area that integrates and weighs previous experiences with reward and loss to select choices with the highest overall value. Recently, it has been demonstrated that a period of sleep can enhance decision-making on this task. Our study investigated the sleep mechanisms (sleep stages and cortical activity) that underlie this improvement. We recorded electrophysiology for 3 con

The effect of slow wave sleep deprivation on mood in adolescents with depressive symptoms: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: There is an urgent need for safe, rapid-acting treatment strategies for adolescent depression. In depressed adults, slow wave sleep deprivation (SWSD) improved next-day mood without disrupting sleep duration, but SWSD has not been tested in adolescents. In a pilot study, the aim was to assess the effect of SWSD on sleep physiology and mood outcomes (depression, rumination, anhedonia) among adolescents with depressive symptoms. METHODS: Sixteen adolescents (17.44 ± 1.46 yr, 12 female) completed three nights of polysomnographic sleep recording: Baseline, SWSD, and Recovery nights. A

Relationship between clinical characteristics of narcolepsy and CSF orexin-A levels.

Although an abnormally low cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-orexin level is well known to be a specific finding in narcoleptic patients, the relationships between the severity of the core symptoms of narcolepsy [i.e. daytime sleepiness and increased rapid eye movement (REM) propensity], as well as levels of obesity, and CSF-orexin levels have not been well elucidated. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between these characteristic symptoms of narcolepsy and CSF-orexin level. Fifty-three patients with narcolepsy with cataplexy (NA/CA) and 17 without cataplexy (NA w/o CA) were enroll

Stage-specific interactions among PLM, RBD, and OSAHS in parkinson's disease and MSA.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbances in synucleinopathies often manifest as periodic limb movements (PLM), REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), and obstructive sleep apnea–hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS), yet their interplay remains unclear. We explored prevalence, severity, and stage-specific interactions in multiple system atrophy (MSA) and Parkinson's disease (PD). METHODS: Thirty‐four MSA and 264 PD patients underwent overnight polysomnography (56 parameters) and completed an institution-specific nocturnal behavior questionnaire comprising 16 binary items, used to screen sleep-related complaints and noc

Neural Markers of Responsiveness to the Environment in Human Sleep.

UNLABELLED: Sleep is characterized by a loss of behavioral responsiveness. However, recent research has shown that the sleeping brain is not completely disconnected from its environment. How neural activity constrains the ability to process sensory information while asleep is yet unclear. Here, we instructed human volunteers to classify words with lateralized hand responses while falling asleep. Using an electroencephalographic (EEG) marker of motor preparation, we show how responsiveness is modulated across sleep. These modulations are tracked using classic event-related potential analyses co

Radar-based sleep stage classification in children undergoing polysomnography: a pilot-study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Unobtrusive monitoring of sleep and sleep disorders in children presents challenges. We investigated the possibility of using Ultra-Wide band (UWB) radar to measure sleep in children. METHODS: Thirty-two children scheduled to undergo a clinical polysomnography participated; their ages ranged from 2 months to 14 years. During the polysomnography, the children's body movements and breathing rate were measured by an UWB-radar. A total of 38 features were calculated from the motion signals and breathing rate obtained from the raw radar signals. Adaptive boosting was used as mach

Depression, sleep, and antidepressants.

Sleep disturbances are an integral feature of depressive disorders. Like the disorders themselves, the sleep disturbances associated with depression are heterogeneous, ranging from hypersomnia to marked difficulties maintaining sleep. These difficulties are to some extent age dependent and reflect abnormalities of central nervous system arousal. Moreover, the sleep disturbances associated with depression have both reversible, or state-dependent, and more persistent trait-like characteristics. Polysomnographic recordings can be used to document sleep maintenance difficulties, and they often als

Narcolepsy.

Narcolepsy is a neurological condition with a prevalence of up to 1 per 1,000 that is characterized by irresistible bouts of sleep. Associated features include the pathological manifestations of rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep: cataplexy, sleep paralysis, hypnagogic hallucinations, and abnormal sleep-onset REM periods and disturbed nocturnal sleep. The condition is strongly associated with the HLA-DR2 and DQw1 phenotype. The phenomenology of narcolepsy is discussed, and diagnostic procedures are reviewed. Treatment modalities involving central nervous system stimulants for somnolence and tricyc
