Non-motor Subtypes of Parkinson's Disease and Sleep Dysfunction.

Parkinson's disease is a syndrome with many clinical presentations. It is often dominated by visible motor symptoms; however, specific nonmotor features, such as cognitive dysfunction, sleep dysfunction, pain, apathy, dysautonomia, depression, and anxiety, enrich the clinical picture significantly. Proposed non-motor phenotypes segregate to central cholinergic, serotonergic, or noradrenergic dysfunctions, and clinical and biomarker-driven studies support these subtypes. Specific sleep problems appear to be associated with specific nonmotor subtypes of Parkinson's disease.

Sleep disorders and Parkinson's disease: is there a right direction?

In the last years, the hypothesis of a close relationship between sleep disorders (SDs) and Parkinson's disease (PD) has significantly strengthened. Whether this association is causal has been also highlighted by recent evidence demonstrating a neurobiological link between SDs and PD. Thus, the question is not whether these two chronic conditions are mutually connected, but rather how and when this relationship is expressed. Supporting this, not all SDs manifest with the same temporal sequence in PD patients. Indeed, SDs can precede or occur concomitantly with the onset of the clinical manifes

Sexual orientation and sleep difficulties: a review of research.

Is sexual orientation associated with sleep difficulties? In this article, we review empirical evidence that addresses this question. Stress is associated with sleep difficulties such as insomnia and, because members of sexual minorities experience greater stress, on average, than do others, lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals can be expected to report more sleep difficulties than their heterosexual peers. We reviewed 17 studies published since 1990, with data gathered from more than 600,000 individuals; some included data on both quantity and quality of sleep. In nine of 12 relevant

Sleep-Related Disorders in Neurology and Psychiatry.

BACKGROUND: Sleep-related disorders are a group of illnesses with marked effects on patients' quality of life and functional ability. Their diagnosis and treatment is a matter of common interest to multiple medical disciplines. METHODS: This review is based on relevant publications retrieved by a selective search in PubMed (Medline) and on the guide- lines of the German Society for Sleep Medicine, the German Neurological Society, and the German Association for Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics. RESULTS: A pragmatic classification of sleep disorders by their three chief complaints-

Itching at night: A review on reducing nocturnal pruritus in children.

The most common causes of chronic nocturnal itching in children are atopic dermatitis and psoriasis, with lichen simplex chronicus and prurigo nodularis contributing to lesser degrees. Despite the prevalence of nocturnal itching, its pathophysiology remains poorly understood. The most troubling consequence of itching at night is poor quality of sleep. Poor sleep quality in children with nocturnal itching has been linked to adverse neurocognitive, behavioral, and physiologic outcomes, including poor performance in school, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, short stature, hypertension, ob

Adverse Effects of Psychotropic Medications on Sleep.

Psychotropic medications such as antidepressants, antipsychotics, stimulants, and benzodiazepines are widely prescribed. Most of these medications are thought to exert their effects through modulation of various monoamines as well as interactions with receptors such as histamine and muscarinic cholinergic receptors. Through these interactions, psychotropics can also have a significant impact on sleep physiology, resulting in both beneficial and adverse effects on sleep.

Sleep Disturbances and Suicide Risk.

Suicide occurs in the presence of psychiatric illness, and is associated with biological, psychological, and social risk factors. Insomnia symptoms and nightmares appear to present elevated risk for suicidal ideation, attempts, and death by suicide. Failure to account for the presence of psychopathology and frequent use of single item assessments of sleep and suicidal ideation are common methodological problems in this literature. Preliminary research, addressing these issues, suggests that subjective sleep complaints may confer independent risk for suicidal behaviors.

Medication-induced sleep disturbances.

OBJECTIVE: To review the literature for medication-induced sleep disturbances. DATA SOURCE: MEDLINE/PUBMED searches (January 2000-May 2010) were conducted to identify pertinent English-language studies. STUDY SELECTION AND DATA EXTRACTION: References were reviewed to identify literature that provided evidence of sleep disturbances caused by prescription medications. DATA SYNTHESIS: Review of studies was performed to determine the effect a given medication had on subjects' sleep architecture or those that induced common sleep disorders. Tables were constructed for specific sleep disturbances

[Observation of sleep disorders in patients with kinking of carotid artery].

Carotid artery redundancy with kinking and coiling can be the cause for acute, ischaemic transitory or even permanent, brain damage and cerebrovascular symptoms. The cerebral ischaemia typically associated to kinking of carotid artery is positional and can be provoked by some (extreme) movenets of the head. The awake patient is coscious of those typical head positions, and capable to avoid them. Prolonged uncontrolled turning of the head during sleep has been reported to cause a stroke in sleep or unpleasant phenomena during sleep. The parasomnias and central sleep apnea syndrome caused by isc
