OBJECTIVE: Social anxiety is characterized by maladaptive self-schemas about being socially undesirable. Self-schemas are deeply held beliefs which are derived from negative autobiographical memories of painful social experiences. In contrast to the plethora of past research on negative memories in social anxiety, almost no research has investigated objectively positive social autobiographical memories. In this preregistered study, we examined the effects of social anxiety and self-schemas on the appraised impact and meaningfulness of retrieved positive versus negative social autobiographical

INTRODUCTION: Social support is considered vital for effective management of chronic conditions, but its role in improving adherence to antihypertensive medication and control of hypertension in urban Nepal is unknown. We examined the role of social support in adherence to antihypertensives and controlled blood pressure to inform future interventions for hypertension management.
METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional data collected at baseline of a cluster randomized trial of hypertension patients (n=1252) in the community between May and November 2022. Multidimensional scale of perceived socia

OBJECTIVES: As the opposite end of the continuum from social integration, social isolation may put individuals at a greater risk of poor mental health. Conceptualizing living alone as an objective and structural indicator of social isolation and loneliness as subjective perceptions of social isolation, the present study hypothesized that the relation between living alone and depressive symptoms would be mediated by the feelings of loneliness. Using older Korean Americans as the target population, the mediation model was examined in consideration of the contextual factors such as demographics (

BACKGROUND: The proposed draft of the DSM-5 from the Anxiety Disorder Workgroup recommends allowing the diagnosis of social anxiety disorder (SAD) in individuals with medical conditions, if the anxiety is considered to be excessive. Although prior research has examined diagnosing SAD in individuals with stuttering, such research has not yet been conducted in obese individuals.
METHODS: This study compared demographic and clinical characteristics of obese individuals diagnosed with DSM-IV SAD (n = 135), modified SAD (clinically significant social anxiety related to weight only; n = 40), and a

There is a large unmet disease burden arising from asthma in pregnancy. Pregnant women affected by moderate to severe asthma have an increased risk for adverse perinatal outcomes. This can be worsened by social determinants of health, which are social and environmental conditions that affect health and the quality of life. Here we present the case of a medically complex pregnant woman with worsening asthma and challenges in optimizing positive outcomes for both the mother and baby during the perinatal period. This case captures several elements of social determinants of health that affect heal

This study hypothesized that maternal adjustment, perceptions, and social support would better predict child adaptation to craniofacial disfigurement than medical severity. Mothers of 77 children (ages 6-12) completed the Child Behavior Checklist, Beck Depression Inventory, Spielberger Trait Anxiety Scale, Social Support Questionnaire Revised, and Parenting Stress Index. Medical severity was assessed by the number of operations (craniofacial and other), comorbid medical conditions, and the Hay Attractiveness Scale. The children and mothers in our sample resembled a normal population in terms o

IMPORTANCE: Findings suggest that the efficacy of D-cycloserine (DCS) for enhancing exposure therapy may be strongest when administered after sessions marked by low fear at the conclusion of exposure practice. These findings have prompted investigation of DCS dosing tailored to results of exposure sessions.
OBJECTIVE: To compare tailored postsession DCS administration with presession DCS administration, postsession DCS administration, and placebo augmentation of exposure therapy for social anxiety disorder.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This double-blind randomized clinical trial involv

Population ageing has drawn growing attention to cognitive ageing as a major public health and social policy issue. However, cognitive ageing is marked by substantial heterogeneity, reflecting not only biological and genetic processes but also the cumulative influence of social, economic, and institutional conditions across the life course. This editorial introduces a Special Issue that advances a social determinants perspective on cognitive ageing by integrating life-course, inequality, and contextual approaches across diverse geographical settings. Drawing on longitudinal surveys, administra

Large-scale restoration in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest is expected to recover biodiversity, carbon stocks, and other ecosystem functions while also supporting rural livelihoods. Yet the evidence supporting these claimed outcomes remains uneven, especially when distinguishing reported outcomes from causal evidence based on baselines, controls, counterfactuals, or long-term monitoring. We assessed peer-reviewed studies and a contextual set of documented initiatives to synthesize reported environmental, social, and economic findings together with governance and financing conditions associated w

Early Life Stress (ELS) increases the risk for mental health issues in humans, notably in major depression and anxiety disorders. ELS is frequently modeled in laboratory rodents by disrupting the early postnatal environment. Literature on ELS is expanding, yet studies on sex-specific differences remain mixed. We utilized a novel ELS protocol that subjected mouse pups of both sexes to maternal separation and removed pup-to-pup contact comfort during postnatal days 10 to 17. We hypothesized that this ELS protocol would induce depressive and anxiety-like phenotypes persisting into adulthood, with

Chronic low back pain (LBP) represents a leading cause of absenteeism from work. An accurate knowledge of complex interactions is essential in understanding the difficulties of return to work (RTW) experienced by workers affected by chronic LBP. This study aims to identify factors related to chronic LBP, the worker, and the psycho-social environment that could predict and influence the duration of an episode of sick leave due to chronic LBP.Studies reporting the relation between prognostic factors and absenteeism from work in patients with LBP were included. The selected studies were grouped b

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects millions of people worldwide, many of whom are affected with post-TBI mood disorders or behavioral changes, including aggression or social withdrawal. Diminished functionality can persist for decades after TBI and delay rehabilitation and resumption of employment. It has been established that there is a relationship between these mental disorders and brain injury. However, the etiology and causal relationships behind these conditions are poorly understood. Rodent models provide a helpful tool for researching mood disorders and social impairment due to their

OBJECTIVES: The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in an enormous burden on population health and the economy around the world. Although most cities in the United States have reopened their economies from previous lockdowns, it was not clear how the magnitude of different control measures-such as face mask use and social distancing-may affect the timing of reopening the economy for a local region. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between reopening dates and control measures and identify the conditions under which a city can be reopened safely.
STUDY DESIGN: This was a mathematical

Recent reviews of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) show limited support for its initially cited enhancing effects on working memory (WM). They highlight the need for additional research, assessing the specific circumstances that optimize stimulation outcome. Social stress is an attractive candidate in this regard, as it affects WM and is mediated by prefrontal cortex activity; tDCS that targets these neuronal networks may, therefore, interact with social stress to affect WM. Our objective was to explore the interaction between social stress and tDCS on WM performance in a healthy

Nowadays, proposing policies or recommendations regarding intervention requires recognizing that our health policies aim to resolve health conditions caused by extreme poverty and inequity in different styles and living conditions. It is necessary to unveil the interests of actors closer to efficiency than to health equity, in scenarios of inequality that are made evident through gradients in health among disadvantaged populations of our country. Health policy analyzes require integrating measurement, description and political participation with recognition policies in a health context, genera

The aim of this study is to bring into focus the living conditions of the older adults in Turkey by using quality of life (QoL) criteria through which to highlight dimensions relating to their QoL status in comparison to other age cohorts. Are there specific QoL issues among older adults that would indicate that they display systematic differences in comparison to other age cohorts in Turkey? To what extent are there gender differences among older adults in QoL status? Data from the EQLS conducted in 2007 provided the information for understanding the self-reported conditions of older adults.

Patients with social phobia often experience negative self-images in social situations. The current study investigated whether negative self-images have a causal role in maintaining social phobia. Patients with social phobia participated twice in a conversation with a stranger, once whilst holding their usual negative self-image in mind and once whilst holding a less negative (control) self-image in mind, with order counterbalanced across participants. Compared to the control image condition, when participants held the negative image in mind they experienced greater anxiety, rated their anxiet

Social isolation is a prevalent consequence of acquired brain injury (ABI) that has notable impacts on wellbeing. Although social connection is recognized as central to recovery, little is known about how service providers understand and promote it. This study explored how services foster social connection post-ABI, the barriers and enablers encountered, how success is understood and what could strengthen future provision. Six online focus groups were conducted with 19 individuals working or volunteering across ABI services in the UK, USA, Australia and New Zealand. Data were analysed using re

This study investigates the illness experience of women who are affected by primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), a rare chronic liver disease which mostly affects women. Despite the fact that PBC is medically recognised, it shares many characteristics with other chronic and controversial conditions which may lead to delegitimation of the patient's experience of illness, impacting on the construction of the patient's self-identity. Twenty three women took part in semi-structured interviews. Data were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis and the analysis identified three themes th
