Marginalized groups in Manitoba, Canada, especially females and people who inject drugs, are overrepresented in new HIV diagnoses and disproportionately affected by HIV and structural disadvantages. Informed by syndemic theory, our aim was to understand people living with HIV's (PLHIV) gendered and intersecting barriers and facilitators across the cascade of HIV care before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study was co-designed and co-led alongside people with lived experience and a research advisory committee. We employed semi-structured interviews with thirty-two participants and three

Globally, human population structure is quickly trending older, increasing the prevalence and systemic burden of age-related skeletal disorders such as osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is characterized by the loss of bone mass, including trabecular bone tissue, leading to skeletal fracture. Although clinically important, fundamental questions remain about normal trabecular bone variation and age-related bone loss. In this study, we use free-ranging rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) from the Cayo Santiago Field Station to explore variation in trabecular bone structure. We measured several aspects of t

Understanding the factors that influence the return to physical activity can help to modify behaviour to enhance the recovery of symptoms and physical activity. We conducted 14 semi-structured interviews to explore the barriers and facilitators to returning to physical activity in adults following a mild traumatic brain injury (TBI). The study design was informed by the Theoretical Domains Framework and Capability, Opportunity and Motivation-Behaviour model. Ten key factors were identified in the analysis: four factors consistently acted as barriers (fatigue, sensory overload, symptoms, social

Background: Childhood trauma has negative immediate and long-term impacts on depression. Questions remain, however, regarding the cognitive factors influencing this relationship. This study aimed to investigate the role of three cognitive factors - cognitive overgeneralisation, rumination and social problem-solving - as mediating factors in the relationship between childhood trauma and symptoms of depression. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study in Iran from March to July 2023. Participants (N = 227; Mean age 32.44 ± 8.95 years) with depression completed measures of childhood trauma, d

BACKGROUND: Iran has strict anti-alcohol laws that prohibit the consumption of alcohol. Although no detailed statistics are available on alcohol consumption in Iran, anecdotally, it has increased, with the sale of 511 million liters of alcohol per year. The purpose of this study was to identify factors that increase the likelihood of alcohol consumption in Iran. METHODS: We used a qualitative thematic analysis approach in this study. The collection and analysis of data continued until saturation was reached and patterns were repeated. As a result, 21 alcohol consumers were interviewed using se

Child maltreatment is a preventable public health problem. Research has demonstrated that neighborhood structural factors (e.g. poverty, crime) can influence the proportion of a neighborhood's children who are victims of maltreatment. A newer strategy is the identification of potentially modifiable social processes at the neighborhood level that can also influence maltreatment. Toward this end, this study examines neighborhood-level data (maltreatment cases substantiated by Illinois' child protection agency, 1995-2005, social processes measured by the Project on Human Development in Chicago Ne

The growing number of people living in deprived urban neighborhoods, which often have unhealthy environments, is of growing concern to inequality researchers. Social capital could be a resource to help such communities get ahead. In this study, we examined the differential effects of bonding and bridging social capital on self-rated health using two operational definitions, which we call personal and geographic social capital. Bonding and bridging social capital were operationally distinguished as respondents' perceived similarity to other members of a group with respect to personal characteri

INTRODUCTION: Quality of life in prostate cancer survivorship is becoming increasingly important, with mental and social wellbeing recognised as key components. However, limited global evaluation of psychosocial challenges experienced after treatment exists. Therefore, we aimed to explore the lived experiences of men who underwent radical treatment, and its psychosocial impact.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This qualitative study was conducted using 19 men who had undergone radical treatment (prostatectomy or radiotherapy) for their cancer. Semi-structured interviews were conducted exploring lived ex

Mentalizing and emotion recognition are impaired in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD). It is not clear whether these abilities are also disturbed in other conditions with prominent frontal lobe involvement, such as progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). Our aim was to investigate social cognition (facial emotion recognition, recognition of social norms violation and mentalizing) in bvFTD and PSP. The neural basis of these functions in PSP and bvFTD groups, by analysis of structural neuroimaging, were also investigated. Twenty-three bvFTD patients, 21 PSP patients and 23 healthy

OBJECTIVE: Research suggests that social supports are associated with housing retention among adults who have experienced homelessness. Yet, we know very little about the social support context in consumers find and retain housing. We examined the ways and identified the junctures in which consumers' skills and deficits in accessing and mobilizing social supports influenced their longitudinal housing status.
METHOD: We performed semi-structured qualitative interviews with VA Greater Los Angeles consumers (n = 19) with serious mental illness, substance use disorders, and a history of homelessn

BACKGROUND: People who use drugs (PWUD) commonly experience housing vulnerability due to the intersection of drug laws, housing policies, gentrification, and social marginalization. Housing vulnerability produces social suffering amongst PWUD and is linked to health and social harms. In Vancouver, Canada, the rapid gentrification of the Downtown Eastside - a low-income inner-city neighbourhood - and the lack of affordable housing has led to residential evictions emerging as a key community concern. This study sought to understand the policies and practices that produced evictions among PWUD, s

Human disease structure has constantly changed in close association with the times and society. Nowadays, there are so many"brain and mind problems"against a background of social issues. In developed countries including Japan, mental illnesses have seriously affected the lives and health of patients and their families. It is historically clear that stigma towards mental ill- nesses and a fragile mental health service have led to the existing situation. Therefore, to achieve the development of psychiatry in the future, we need to ruminate over the possibility of prevention, early intervention,

The cerebellum has traditionally been viewed as a brain structure subserving skilled motor behaviors. However, the cerebellum might be involved not only in movement coordination, but also in action observation and understanding of others' actions. Veridical visual perception of human body motion is of immense importance for a variety of daily-life situations and for successful social interactions. Here, by combining visual psychophysics with a lesion analysis, we assessed visual sensitivity to human walking in patients with lesions to the left cerebellum. Patients with left lateral cerebellar

The large number of refugees in the world must cope with the loss of family and homeland. This paper proposes a new concept of cultural bereavement and presents a framework for its identification in the clinical interview with refugees. The cultural bereavement interview explores reactions to personal losses and to losses of both the social systems and the cultural meanings. Eleven areas are systematically explored, the first nine are indicators of bereavement and the tenth and eleventh are "antidotes" to cultural bereavement. The cultural bereavement interview can provide a clinical framework

Social scientists point to Japanese Society as having a high level of group cohesiveness that results from the psychodynamic need to mutual dependency in the Japanese personality structure, which is fostered by symbiotic mother-child relationship in childhood. Such a traditional interdependency seems to modify psychsomatic mechanisms in the Japanese inducing the preponderance of the types of reactions related to what is called 'vegetative retreat'. While over-indulgence to the maternal interdependence may threaten the development of an independent person, the severe deprivation of motherly lov

Autistic adults often report high levels of social anxiety and significant life impacts from this anxiety on well-being and functioning. Although cognitive-behavioural therapy in group settings has been adapted for autistic populations, there is a paucity of research exploring how autistic individuals experience CBT interventions. This qualitative study investigated autistic adults' experiences of a modified cognitive-behavioural therapy group programme for social anxiety. Twenty-seven autistic participants were recruited through clinical services and community outreach. Following the interven

Russian public health and its social determinants have been the theme of several recent studies. In one of these, Rose [(2000). How much does social capital add to individual health? A survey study of Russians. Social Science & Medicine, 51(9), 1421-1435] puts forward a composite model as a way of getting away from two traditions: one that postulates that social capital influences health independently of human capital attributes (education, social class, income, etc.) and one that postulates that human capital is the main determinant of health, while social capital is more or less irrelevant.

Two studies investigating the cognitive processes associated with anticipatory social anxiety are reported. Study 1 used a semi-structured interview to compare high and low socially anxious individuals ( [Formula: see text] per group) in terms of their reported mental processes during periods of anticipatory social anxiety. Study 2 investigated the anxiety inducing effects of the mental processes that were shown to be characteristic of high socially anxious individuals in Study 1. PURPOSE: The experiences of a teenage girl with Rett syndrome who was being educated in an inclusive middle school are described to provide a better understanding of how social relationships create meaningful contexts for individuals with limited skills. The case example is used to illustrate the principle that contexts (including expectancies, acceptance, philosophical principles) can be designed to support meaningful social relationships, despite social and intellectual disabilities.
METHOD: Naturalistic observations of social interactions over a two year period are reported to illustrate t
