We studied the role of somatosensory amplification, as measured by a self-report questionnaire, in symptomatology, overall discomfort, and disability in 115 patients with upper-respiratory-tract infections who visited an adult medical walk-in clinic. Multiple regression analyses indicated that amplification was a statistically significant predictor of the patients' localized but not systemic symptoms, of reported overall discomfort, and of their social and vocational disability. This report compares patients with non-organic chronic intractable (NOCI) pain with those having chronic pain associated with diagnosed physical illness though it was insufficient to explain the severity and nature of pain. BACKGROUND: There are few diagnostic tools available to the dermatologist to help in the diagnosis of patients with delusions of parasitosis (DOP).
OBJECTIVE: We sought to find differences in presentation and clinical course between patients who received a final diagnosis of DOP and those who received a final diagnosis of a primary medical condition or other psychiatric disorder.

Clinical findings on irritable bowel syndrome in adults and recurrent abdominal pain in children are reviewed to determine if what is known about each disorder can illuminate our understanding of the other.
