Azo-coupled macrocyclic chromoionophores incorporating benzene (L(1)) and pyridine (L(2)) subunits were synthesized, respectively. In a cation-induced color change experiment, both receptors showed Hg(2+) selectivity. However, L(1) gave a larger cation-induced hypsochromic shift than L(2), suggesting that the presence of the pyridine unit in L(2) may inhibit the Hg...N-azo interaction. The observed Hg(2+)-selective color changes for L(1) and L(2) were found to be controlled by anion-coordination ability. NMR titration of the proposed receptor ligand with Hg(II) salt was accomplished.

A novel chemosensor, based on tris[2-(4-phenyldiazenyl)phenylaminoethoxy]cyclotriveratrylene (TPPECTV) as chromophore, has been developed for the colorimetric determination and visual detection of Hg(II) ions. Here we present the first comprehensive report on CdSe/CdS heterostructure nanocrystals. The effects of core size and shell thickness on the optical properties of CdSe/CdS heterostructure nanocrystals are investigated. We report a reliable synthetic method to grow thick CdS shells on CdSe cores with sizes ranging from 2.5-4.7 nm. We provide a calibration curve, which enables determination of CdS shell thickness (+/-0.1 nm) over a wide range of core sizes, circumventing the need for time-consuming HRTEM analyses. Thiamphenicol and florfenicol are two phenicol antibiotics commonly used in aquaculture. Photodegradation experiments on these phenicols were performed in aqueous solutions under irradiation of different light sources. We found under UV-vis irradiation (lamda >200 nm) they photodegraded the fastest in seawater, followed by pure water and freshwater, whereas under solar or simulated sunlight (lamda >290 nm), they photodegraded in freshwater only. We report the synthesis of photoluminescent Au nanoparticles of varying sizes stabilized with a carboxylate group terminated aromatic thiol, thiosalicylic acid. The formation of Au nanoparticles and its stabilization with the thiol has been characterized by different spectroscopic and thermal methods. The water solubility, along with the low degree of aggregation and photoluminescence, enhances their suitability for biological applications. The photoluminescence may be due to charge transfer of the Au core with the stabilizing ligand.

Cyanide formation by microorganisms is typically observed during early stationary growth phase and is facilitated by the presence of iron(III) and inorganic phosphate. Extracellular free cyanide in aqueous solutions might readily react with methemoglobin added and can be determined by UV/VIS spectroscopy. A simple and rapid micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatographic method is described for the separation and quantification of five expectorant drugs, including ambroxol (AMB), bromhexine (BRM), carbocysteine, guaiacol and guaifenesin. The quantitative influence of copper on the interaction between cytochrome c and sulfite, which is a derivate of sulfur dioxide in the human body, has been studied by fluorescence spectrometry and ultraviolet absorption spectrometry in vitro. The results indicate that copper may intensely combine with protein component and ferroporphyrin component in cytochrome c at the concentration of 0.1 mM, and the respective association constants (K(A)) are 3.77 x 10(4) L mol(-1) and 9.38 x 10(3) L mol(-1). Kinetic and thermodynamic studies have been made on the effect of the p-nitrophenol product on the activity of bovine carbonic anhydrase in 50 mM Tris buffer pH 7.5, at 300K using UV spectrophotometry and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC).
