Twenty-two chronic alcoholic patients were assessed by neurologic examination and muscle biopsy. The patients manifested proximal muscular weakness to a variable extent. One case presented as an acute bout of myopathy, according to the Manual Muscle Test, MMT. In a retrospective study of 96 patients with a myelodysplastic syndrome, the reproducibility of the French-American-British (FAB) classification was determined. Morphological abnormalities in peripheral blood and bone marrow were studied. Slides were reviewed by 3 examiners. A liver cell carcinoma removed surgically by partial hepatectomy from a 79-year-old woman contained abundant orcein-positive granules in many tumour cells. The granules were similar to those usually identified as representing copper-associated protein, yet they lacked copper, as demonstrated by negative rhodanine and rubeanic acid stains and energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis.

Orcein-positive hepatocellular material (OPHM), found in 18 of 44 hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC), was compared histochemically and ultrastructurally with similar granular materials in other liver diseases. OPHM was not found in 15 control livers, 45 metastatic liver cancers or ten cholangiocellular carcinomas. OPHM in HCC was stained with orcein when the tissue sections were preoxidized. Apocrine hidrocystomas are often pigmented clinically. The cause of this pigmentation is not known. A case of pigmented apocrine hidrocystoma is presented with evidence of melanin as the underlying mechanism of the pigmentation. Review of an additional 150 cases suggests that this is rare. The Tyndall effect, analogous to that seen in blue dome cysts of fibrocystic disease of the breast may be the likely explanation of the pigmentation seen clinically in most cases of apocrine hidrocystomas.

Previous intravital staining techniques for parathyroid localisation have met with variable success and complications. Modification of these techniques, employing a more consistent dose, combined with a prolonged infusion time has provided more uniform staining of normal and abnormal parathyroid tissue, other tissues showing little or no colour change. An intracytoplasmic inclusion seen in cells in the urinary sediments of a patient with the mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome (Kawasaki disease) is described. Cytochemical features suggested that the inclusion-bearing cells may be derived from mononucleated phagocytic cells.
