BACKGROUND: Dengue is a major vector-borne disease, with rising incidence driven by climate change, rapid urbanization, and increased international travel. Although early warning systems (EWSs) have shown promising predictive performance in endemic settings, limited evidence on implementation barriers from local end users hinders their integration into routine proactive vector control.
METHODS: A qualitative study with in-depth interviews was conducted with local end users, including local authorities, health practitioners, and health volunteers. A deductive approach utilizing a predefined co

BACKGROUND: Arts and culture are increasingly recognised as potential supports for mental health, yet little distinction has been made between receptive engagement (e.g., visiting museums, watching performances, listening to music) and active participation (e.g., creating art or attending classes). There is limited understanding of how, for whom, and under what circumstances receptive engagement may influence anxiety, depression, and psychological distress in young people.
METHOD: We conducted a realist review of evidence up to February 2026 to examine how receptive arts and cultural engageme

BACKGROUND: Elimination of bloodborne viruses including HIV and hepatitis C virus from prisons requires high coverage of evidence-based interventions that prevent bloodborne virus transmission, including needle and syringe programs. Canada launched a Prison Needle Exchange Program (PNEP) in nine federal prisons in 2018; however, uptake among people who inject drugs in prison remains low. We aimed to explore barriers and facilitators to improving PNEP uptake identified by correctional officers and healthcare workers.
METHODS: Participants from nine federal prisons with PNEP completed focus gro

Few accounts exist of programmes in low- and middle-income countries seeking to strengthen community knowledge and skills in mental health. This case study uses a realist lens to explore how a mental health project in a context with few mental health services, strengthened community mental health competence by increasing community knowledge, creating safer social spaces and engaging partnerships for action. We used predominantly qualitative methods to explore relationships between context, interventions, mechanisms and outcomes in the "natural setting" of a community-based mental health projec

The effective control of an outbreak of a highly contagious disease such as foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in the United States will require a strong partnership between the animal agriculture industry and the government. However, because of the diverse number of economic, social, and psychological influences affecting livestock producers, their complete cooperation during an outbreak may not be assured. We conducted interviews with 40 individuals involved in the Texas cattle industry in order to identify specific behaviors where producer participation or compliance may be reduced. Through quali

The HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN) is the largest publicly funded international collaboration facilitating the evaluation of vaccines to prevent HIV and TB. Central to the HVTN's success is the reliance on robust community engagement methods, ensuring community participation and facilitating community awareness and knowledge of research. Community engagement is a dynamic process that requires active participation from all stakeholders to ensure success. The HVTN and its global Clinical Research Sites (CRSs) located in Africa, Latin America, and North America are known as the Network. We des

The aim of this study was to actively integrate expertise of persons living with spina bifida, to explore conditions embedded in their everyday life. This was important because young adults with spina bifida risk not being able to fully participate in the community on equal terms and in accordance with their own preferences. Photovoice, a community-based participatory research approach, was utilized to engage participants through dialogue and photography. An exhibition was created to share results with community and stakeholders. An overarching theme that characterized the experiences of the g

BACKGROUND: Severe shortages of blood for transfusion are a persistent global health crisis, with the burden disproportionately concentrated in low-income countries. Diverse stakeholder perspectives on blood availability might inform improvements. We aimed to use a comprehensive approach to identify the challenges, facilitators, and innovations within the blood transfusion continuum (BTC) in three different Kenyan settings.
METHODS: In this qualitative study, we interrogated the BTC in Siaya, Nakuru, and Turkana counties as part of the Pathways for Innovation in Blood Transfusion Systems in K

The rapid increase in the older adult population worldwide, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) like Pakistan, raises critical challenges for healthcare, social support, and policy planning. Older adults in LMICs, especially in culturally diverse regions like Sindh, Pakistan, often face limited access to healthcare, economic insecurity, and social isolation. These challenges highlight the need to understand ageing in this context and explore potential solutions at multiple levels of the socio-ecological model. This qualitative descriptive study used focus group discussions (

INTRODUCTION: Accessible, person-centred, non-pharmacologic modalities are needed to address chronic pain and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD). Building off prior single-site pilot studies of music therapy (MT) in SCD, the purpose of this study is to (1) examine the data collection processes and intervention implementation overall and across two sites and (2) evaluate the implementation of the MT and health education interventions using quantitative and qualitative data.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This three-arm, two-site, feasibility randomis

BACKGROUND: Healthcare associated infections (HAIs) are infections that patients acquire while receiving treatment and are not present during admission. The prevalence of HAIs is typically higher (15%) in low-and middle-income countries than that in high-income countries (7%). HAIs present a significant burden on patients, families, and health systems as they contribute to longer hospital stays, increased healthcare costs, and antimicrobial resistance. HAIs can be prevented or reduced by implementing infection prevention and control (IPC) measures. However, IPC measures are often poorly implem

Background/Objectives: Healthcare institutional betrayal (HIB) is a betrayal trauma that occurs when a healthcare organization or system perpetrates acts of wrongdoing against or fails to act to protect an individual who depends upon that system for care and services. Known consequences of experiencing acts of HIB include increased healthcare provider and system distrust and anticipated healthcare avoidance, highlighting the public health implications of unaddressed HIB. Little is known about actions that healthcare stakeholders can take to repair HIB. Thus, this study experimentally tested th

Effective transition from iron-folic acid (IFA) to multiple micronutrient supplementation (MMS) requires context-specific evidence. Using the MMS pilot program in Burkina Faso, this study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of MMS and identify factors that can influence a successful scale-up. We conducted a qualitative study. In-depth interviews (n = 57) with policymakers, clinicians and community actors as well as focus group discussions (n = 12) were conducted with pregnant/lactating women, husbands, and community leaders. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a leading cause of cancer mortality in the United States. Disparities in HCC incidence and mortality are amplified in Boston, Massachusetts, which has 42% higher HCC mortality than the nation. HCC-CARE was a one-day symposium that aimed to identify goals and strategies necessary to eliminate HCC disparities in the Greater Boston area by 2030. Sixty-six local and state stakeholders attended the symposium, including HCC clinical experts (eg, medical oncologists) and primary care clinicians representing all seven of Boston's major cancer centers, ancillary staff
