[Prism-Induced Gaze Shift and Strabismus Treatment for Ocular Motility Disorders and Anomalous Head Posture].

BACKGROUND: The therapeutic treatment of ocular motility disorders and anomalous head postures (AHP) is often challenging. We report our experience with prism use in these patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective case series of three patients with ocular motility disorders and associated AHP who were treated with prism correction. RESULTS: A 37-year-old male with a traumatic left oculomotor nerve palsy suffered from a residual minor depression deficit and a severe elevation palsy. With OS: 10^ base-up he was corrected for left hypotropia only in down gaze. Ten yoked prisms base-up shift

Differentiating Acute and Subacute Vertical Strabismus Using Different Head Positions During the Upright-Supine Test.

IMPORTANCE: Accurate clinical differentiation between skew deviation and fourth nerve palsy (4NP) is critical in the acute and subacute sett … 4NP. Conversion of an incomitant vertical deviation in the upright position to a comitant vertical strabismus in the supine position in all head positions, as well as the absence of additional ocular motor and/or neurologic signs, may constitute a more useful clue.

Geriatric patients are predisposed to strabismus following thyroid-related orbital decompression surgery: A multivariate analysis.

Geriatric patients (age ≥ 65) are prone to complications after surgery and are at risk for severe thyroid eye disease (TED). In this study, we aim to identify preoperative demographic and TED patterns associated with geriatric patients who underwent decompression surgery, to examine the effect of age on postoperative strabismus rates, and to identify factors that may contribute to postoperative strabismus in the geriatric subgroup. We retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent thyroid-related orbital decompression surgery at the Kellogg Eye Center, University of Michigan, between 1999 and…

Use of biodegradable collagen-glycosaminoglycan copolymer matrix implant to reduce postoperative fibrosis in strabismus surgery.

The occurrence of restrictive strabismus after conjunctival surgeries is widely described in the literature. Fibrosis causes adherence of the conjunctiva to the Tenon's capsule, intermuscular membrane, adipose orbital tissue, sclera, and extraocular muscle tissue. Fibrosis causes adherence of the conjunctiva to the Tenon's capsule, intermuscular membrane, adipose orbital tissue, sclera, and extraocular muscle tissue. We report a case of the use of a biodegradable collagen-glycosaminoglycan copolymer matrix implant (Ologen®) as an alternative adjuvant, used as a spacer to mechanically separate …

Improvement in specific function-related quality-of-life concerns after strabismus surgery in nondiplopic adults.

BACKGROUND: We have previously reported improvement in psychosocial scores after strabismus surgery on the patient-derived health-related quality of life (HRQOL) Adult Strabismus 20 (AS-20) questionnaire in adults with nondiplopic strabismus. Unexpectedly, we also found improvement in the function domain. The aim of the present study was to identify which specific aspects of function-related quality of life improved postoperatively. METHODS: We retrospectively identified non diplopic adult patients with a history of childhood onset strabismus who underwent surgery and who had preoperative and…

Mutation in ADAT3, encoding adenosine deaminase acting on transfer RNA, causes intellectual disability and strabismus.

BACKGROUND: Intellectual disability (ID) is one of the most common forms of disability worldwide, displaying a wide range of aetiologies and affecting nearly 2% of the global population. OBJECTIVE: To describe a novel autosomal recessive form of ID with strabismus and its underlying aetiology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Autozygosity mapping, linkage analysis and exome sequencing were performed in a large multiplex consanguineous family that segregates ID and strabismus. Exome sequencing was independently performed in three other consanguineous families segregating the same disease. Direct sequen…

Effects of strabismic amblyopia and strabismus without amblyopia on visuomotor behavior, I: saccadic eye movements.

PURPOSE: It has previously been shown that anisometropic amblyopia affects the programming and execution of saccades. The aim of the current study was to investigate the impact of strabismic amblyopia on saccade performance. METHODS: Fourteen adults with strabismic amblyopia, 13 adults with strabismus without amblyopia, and 14 visually normal adults performed saccades and reach-to-touch movements to targets presented at ± 5° and ± 10° eccentricity during binocular and monocular viewing. Latency, amplitude, and peak velocity of primary and secondary saccades were measured. RESULTS: In contras…

Superior oblique tucks for apparent inferior oblique overaction and V-pattern strabismus associated with craniosynostosis.

INTRODUCTION: Apparent inferior oblique overaction and apparent superior oblique underaction are common in strabismus associated with craniosynostosis, and in many cases are likely due to excyclotorsion of the globes, with the rectus muscles acting with oblique vectors. We present a patient with craniosynostosis who underwent bilateral superior oblique tucks to specifically address the excyclotorsion of the globes. METHODS: A 16-year-old male with Saethre-Chotzen syndrome presented with apparent bilateral inferior oblique overaction and apparent bilateral superior oblique underaction. He had …
