Intubation macrodacryocystography and quantitative scintillography: the "complete" lacrimal assessment.

Intubation MDCG with subtraction provides excellent visualization of the lacrimal excretory apparatus. Quantitative lacrimal scintillography is the most useful method of assessing lacrimal excretory function. These two investigations are complementary and may be performed simultaneously. They provide a rational basis for diagnosis and management of disease of the lacrimal drainage system.

Green spectrophotometric approaches applied to tertiary mixture for management of common cold and COVID-19 symptoms.

Recently, cold and cough dosage forms have gained significant attention due to their use in the supportive protocols for managing COVID-19 symptoms. In this study, a pharmaceutical formulation containing Paracetamol (PAR), Guaifenesin (GUA), and Phenylephrine hydrochloride (PHE) was investigated for spectral resolution and quantification using advanced spectrophotometric methods. The spectra of these components were significantly overlapped and present in their combined tablet in a challenging ratio of 250:100:5 for PAR, GUA, and PHE, respectively. The established approaches were employed for

Contribution of expiratory muscle pressure to dynamic intrinsic positive end-expiratory pressure: validation using the Campbell diagram.

In spontaneously breathing (SB) patients expiratory muscle contraction leads to an overestimation of dynamic intrinsic PEEP (PEEP(i),dyn). To quantify this overestimation, PEEP(i),dyn measured with the esophageal balloon technique was corrected for the increase in Pga over the course of expiration (Pga,exp rise), for the whole decay of Pga during inspiration (Pga,total decay) or for the part of Pga decay restricted between the onset of inspiratory effort and the point of zero flow (Pga,zf decay). Corrections were compared with the reference PEEP(i),dyn (PEEP(i),dyn ref ), calculated by using t

Long bone panoramas from fluoroscopic X-ray images.

This paper presents a new method for creating a single panoramic image of a long bone from several individual fluoroscopic X-ray images. Panoramic images are useful preoperatively for diagnosis, and intraoperatively for long bone fragment alignment, for making anatomical measurements, and for documenting surgical outcomes. Our method composes individual overlapping images into an undistorted panoramic view that is the equivalent of a single X-ray image with a wide field of view. The correlations between the images are established from the graduations of a radiolucent ruler imaged alongside the

Guide to the structural characterization of protein aggregates and amyloid fibrils by CD spectroscopy.

Protein aggregation and amyloid formation are linked to numerous degenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease. Additionally, protein aggregation plays a crucial role in various biological processes, such as storage of molecules or cell signaling. Protein molecules can form a wide range of aggregates, from oligomers of different sizes to non-specific aggregates and highly ordered cross-β structured amyloid fibrils with diverse morphologies. Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy is a widely used technique to study protein structures providing detailed information at the secon

Novel endovascular transmural technique for pharmacological block of superior cervical ganglion prevents sympathetic-mediated cerebral vasospasm.

BACKGROUND: Sympathetic-mediated vasoconstriction from the superior cervical ganglion (SCG) is a significant contributor to cerebral vasospasm. Inhibition of the SCG has been shown to improve cerebral blood flow and reverse cerebral vasospasm in swine models. We evaluated the efficacy of a novel minimally invasive endovascular approach to target and pharmacologically inhibit the SCG, using a Micro-Infusion Device for transmural drug delivery. METHODS: Eight SCGs in four Yorkshire swine were surgically identified. After confirming appropriate sympathetic-mediated intracranial vasoconstriction

A "Mismatched" connection: a rare case of indirect or dural carotid-cavernous fistula: a case based review.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: A carotid-cavernous sinus fistula is an abnormal connection between the internal or external carotid artery and the venous system of the cavernous sinus. It represents a rare entity, and it is often misdiagnosed due to its overlapping symptoms with other conditions such as cavernous sinus thrombosis or orbital inflammation. Cerebral angiography continues to be the gold standard for diagnosis and surgical planning in patients with CCF, and the endovascular trans-venous approach still represents the primary line of treatment. Trans-arterial technique has become an ex

Identification of putative volatile biomarkers of canine leishmaniasis in dog's breath and hair employing a novel algorithm for automated chromatographic peak detection and matching.

The analysis of the volatile compounds released by biological samples represents a promising approach for the non-invasive diagnosis of a disease. The present study, focused on a population of dogs infected with canine leishmaniasis, aimed to decipher the volatolomic profile associated with this disease in dogs, which represent the main animal reservoir for Leishmania pathogen transmission to humans. The volatiles emitted by the breath and hair of dogs were analysed employing the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) technique. The acquired chromatograms were investigated using a novel

Unsupervised anomaly appraisal of cleft faces using a StyleGAN2-based model adaptation technique.

A novel machine learning framework that is able to consistently detect, localize, and measure the severity of human congenital cleft lip anomalies is introduced. The ultimate goal is to fill an important clinical void: to provide an objective and clinically feasible method of gauging baseline facial deformity and the change obtained through reconstructive surgical intervention. The proposed method first employs the StyleGAN2 generative adversarial network with model adaptation to produce a normalized transformation of 125 faces, and then uses a pixel-wise subtraction approach to assess the dif

Percutaneous superior vena cava puncture successful recanalization of a long-segment, angled central venous occlusion: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Multiple complete central venous occlusion (CVO) is rare complication among the hemodialysis population. Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) is the recommended treatment for CVO; however, cases with long-segment occlusion remain challenging. CASE DESCRIPTION: We reported a patient who complained of a swollen right arm for 1 month. On admission, his vital signs were within normal limits. The 76-year-old man had been on hemodialysis with a right forearm arteriovenous fistula (AVF) for 4 years with a history of temporizing catheterization and left forearm AVF failure. One yea

Contrast enhancement for portal images by combination of subtraction and reprojection processes for Compton scattering.

For patient setup of the IGRT technique, various imaging systems are currently available. MV portal imaging is performed in identical geometry with the treatment beam so that the portal image provides accurate geometric information. However, MV imaging suffers from poor image contrast due to larger Compton scatter photons. In this work, an original image processing algorithm is proposed to improve and enhance the image contrast without increasing the imaging dose. Scatter estimation was performed in detail by MC simulation based on patient CT data. In the image processing, scatter photons were

Fenestrated vertebrobasilar junction aneurysm: diagnostic and therapeutic considerations.

Vertebrobasilar junction (VBJ) aneurysms are uncommon and are often found in association with basilar artery (BA) fenestration. The complex anatomical environment of the VBJ, and the complicated geometry of the fenestration make clipping of these aneurysms difficult. Therefore, endovascular treatment of these aneurysms is now widely accepted. The authors describe the case of a 43-year-old woman with sickle cell anemia. She presented with subarachnoid hemorrhage. Digital subtraction angiography was performed and depicted multiple intracranial aneurysms. The patient had a left superior hypophysi

Prospective comparison of magnetic resonance sialography and digital subtraction sialography.

We sought to compare the diagnostic utility of magnetic resonance sialography (MRS) and digital subtraction sialography (DSS) in patients with suspected sialolithiasis or sialadenitis. Sixteen consecutive patients (4 female and 12 male, mean age 51+/-16 years) with suspected sialolithiasis or sialadenitis underwent DSS by a standard technique and MRS. MRS was obtained with a T2-weighted single-shot TSE sequence (TR/TE 2800/1100 msec, acquisition time 7 seconds) using a quadrature head (n = 16) and a surface coil (n = 8). Nineteen symptomatic glands were investigated with DSS: eight submandibul

The neural substrate of picture naming.

A PET study of 10 normal males was carried out using the bolus H215O intravenous injection technique to examine the effects of picture naming and semantic judgment on blood flow. In a series of conditions, subjects (1) passively viewed flashing plus signs, (2) noted the occurrence of abstract patterns, (3) named animal pictures, or (4) carried out a semantic judgment on animal pictures. Anticipatory scans were carried out after the subjects were presented with the instructions but before they began the cognitive task, as they were passively viewing plus signs. Our results serve to clarify a nu

[A successful treatment of giant carotid artery aneurysm by a detachable balloon technic; a child case].

For the treatment of unclippable giant carotid artery aneurysms, proximal occlusion of the carotid artery is still an accepted treatment by surgical ligation, Selverstone clamp, or detachable balloon. However, proximal artery occlusion should be avoided as far as possible. Use of detachable balloons for proximal artery occlusion in the treatment of giant intracranial aneurysm in children has been reported by several authors, but no report of successfully treated cases of occlusion of the aneurysm without occlusion of the parent artery can be found. On January 1st, 1987, a-5-year old girl was a
