OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical efficacy and side effects of ferrous L-threonate for treatment of iron deficiency anemia (IDA).
METHODS: It is a multicentral, randomized, double blind, double placebo and paralled comparative study with positive control. One hundred and forty IDA patients diagnosed according to the standard criteria in three hospitals were randomly divided into a test group (ferrous L-threonate plus placebo ferrous succinate) and a positive control group (ferrous succinate plus placebo ferrous L-threonate). Some iron parameters were examined 1, 4 and 8 weeks after medication.

AIMS: To demonstrate the quantitative distribution of mitochondrial enzymes within the human optic nerve and retina in relation to the pathogenesis of ophthalmic disease.

MR spectroscopy findings in a case of neurocysticercosis are presented. A combination of elevated lactate, alanine, succinate, and choline levels and reduced levels of N -acetylaspartate and creatine in a cystic intraaxial lesion in the brain helped in characterizing the lesion. To our knowledge, the short echo point resolved spectroscopic sequence (PRESS) spectrum of neurocysticercosis, as described in our case, has not been reported before.

Virological and cytochemical parameters of blood leukocytes during acute stenosing laryngotracheitis in 53 children were measured, viz. succinate dehydrogenase, mitochondrial alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase, acid and alkaline phosphatase, myeloperoxidase. The patients were subjected to a combined treatment which included metabolites and their cofactors. The treatment gave good results, shortening the duration and reducing the number of relapses of the disease.
