Characterizing swallowing and feeding in children with leukodystrophies: Retrospective analysis of 22 cases.

INTRODUCTION: Dysphagia is a frequent and potentially life-threating symptom in children affected by leukodystrophies. However, reports on dysphagia in leukodystrophies are scarce. The study aimed to characterize swallowing and feeding in this population. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical charts of 22 children with leukodystrophies referred for swallowing evaluation. The severity of the disease was determined by a child neurologist according to several functional scales. Data on feeding modality and diet type according to the Pediatric Functional Oral Intake Scale (P-FOIS) and

Ultrasound swallowing assessment: the impact of image post-processing on measurement reliability.

The use of ultrasound for swallowing assessment is promising; yet its application has not translated from research into routine clinical practice. While sufficient reliability is key to support implementation, insufficient reliability for swallowing measures has been documented for pocket-sized ultrasound technology. Image quality, a known prerequisite for reliability, may be compromised in small-sized ultrasound technology. This study explored the impact of ultrasound image post-processing on measurement reliability of swallowing parameters. Ultrasound images (n = 30) of hyoid excursion, thyr

The role of gut microbiota-immune axis in swallowing dysfunction and nursing interventions.

Dysphagia constitutes a growing global health burden, particularly among geriatric and post-stroke populations. Although traditionally managed through biomechanical interventions, emerging evidence underscores the microbiota-immune axis as a critical modulator of systemic resilience and clinical outcomes. This review delineates how dysphagia drives systemic dysbiosis via three primary mechanisms: dietary modification, descending migration of oral pathogens along the oral-gut-lung axis, and iatrogenic pharmacological effects. A core pathological consequence is the depletion of microbial metabol

Neural correlation between swallowing motor imagery and execution: an EEG analysis.

Objective. The relationship between swallowing motor imagery (MI) and actual swallowing remains unclear, leading to a lack of physiological basis for the application of swallowing imagery-based brain-computer interface (BCI) paradigms in rehabilitation. This research explored the link between swallowing execution and imagery, aiming to optimize BCI applications for swallowing rehabilitation in patients with dysphagia.Approach.Thirty healthy participants performed swallowing MI and saliva swallowing tasks under video cues, and electroencephalography (EEG) signals from 64 channels and electromyog

The effect of liquid type on the detection of airway invasion during swallow evaluation.

OBJECTIVES: To explore FEES findings obtained using different liquid types, water, cow's milk, and soy milk, with respect to observed penetration, aspiration, and pharyngeal residue, and to describe agreement across liquids. METHODS: Adult patients referred to a university-affiliated dysphagia clinic underwent standardized FEES using water, cow's milk, and soy milk during single and consecutive swallows. Evaluations were performed jointly by a laryngologist and a speech-language pathologist (SLP). Outcome measures included the Penetration-Aspiration Scale (PAS) and the Yale Pharyngeal Residue…

[The value of the Test of Masticating and Swallowing Solids (TOMASS) in screening for dysphagia and malnutrition].

The Test of Masticating and Swallowing Solids (TOMASS) measures the number of bites, chewing cycles, swallows, and the total time required to swallow a standardized saltine cracker. The objective was to evaluate the relevance of TOMASS as a screening tool for dysphagia and malnutrition. This prospective study compared TOMASS results with nutritional status in a group of 30 dysphagic subjects and a control group of 30 matched participants. The TOMASS results (number of chewing cycles, swallows, and total time) were significantly higher in the dysphagic group than in the control group, and in ma…

Effects of Food Characteristics on Masticatory and Swallowing Functions in Healthy Young Adults.

Beyond oral function, the physicochemical properties of food, such as acidity and hardness, significantly influence nutritional intake. Clarifying the relationship between subjective and objective metrics for assessing oral function can help establish simple methods for selecting food with safe and suitable properties tailored to individual oral functions. To objectively and subjectively evaluate the chewing and swallowing processes of gummies with varying hardness and acidity in healthy young adults and to examine relationships between subjective and objective evaluation metrics. Hard to Swallow: Tongue Avulsion Secondary to Hypocortisolism Posing a Difficult Airway.

Maxillofacial trauma involving tongue injuries poses a significant challenge for airway management due to active bleeding, anatomical distortion, and the risk of obstruction and aspiration. We report the case of a 37-year-old man who presented with a self-inflicted tongue avulsion, likely in the context of an epileptic seizure. The patient was orotracheally intubated and transferred by helicopter under sedation and mechanical ventilation to a tertiary center, where the surgical team requested nasotracheal intubation to facilitate intraoral access. However, active bleeding and avulsion of tongu

The Clinical Pathway of the Normal Outpatient Modified Barium Swallow: A Case Series.

OBJECTIVE: Modified barium swallow studies (MBSS) are one of two gold-standard assessments for oropharyngeal swallowing. It is unclear how many patients referred for outpatient MBSS have normal swallowing despite a subjective complaint of dysphagia. This study examined the rate, referral diagnoses, and referral patterns of outpatient MBSS. METHODS: A retrospective descriptive case series was conducted of outpatient adult MBSS between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019. Normal MBSS were identified and stratified by present/absent history of neurological disease or head and neck cancer (HNC)

Age-Related Alterations in Swallowing in Healthy Aged Rodents: A Systematic Review.

Age-related decline in swallowing function is increasingly recognized as a clinical concern in aging populations. To better understand the biological mechanisms underlying functional and structural changes associated with normal aging, rodent models provide a controlled experimental platform. This review systematically examined age-related changes in swallowing function in healthy rodents, compared with that of young adults. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library. Twenty-nine articles were ultimately included in this review. Age-related alte

Sensor Technologies for Measuring Tongue Biomechanics Relevant to Swallowing: A Narrative Review.

Tongue biomechanics are central to swallowing, yet commonly used clinical assessments provide limited insight into the forces and coordination underlying bolus propulsion. Sensor technologies have emerged to address this gap, but the literature remains fragmented across device classes, calibration approaches, and outcome definitions. This narrative review synthesizes sensor modalities used to characterize tongue biomechanics in dysphagia assessment and rehabilitation. A structured search of biomedical databases identified studies describing pneumatic, piezoelectric, strain gauge, capacitive, o

The Influence of Liquid Consistency and Food Texture on Swallowing: A Systematic Review Update.

Diet texture modification is a common intervention for oropharyngeal dysphagia. In 2015, the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) published a systematic review summarizing evidence on how liquid consistency and food texture influence swallowing behavior. This updated review synthesizes new evidence published between 2012 and 2024 addressing how differences in liquid consistency or food texture affect swallowing in humans. A PROSPERO‑registered, PRISMA‑guided review was conducted using the Covidence platform. A multi‑engine search identified English, peer‑reviewed stu

Flow Characteristics of Barium Thickened Liquids during Swallowing in Healthy Adults.

Modification of liquid viscosity complying with the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) framework is crucial in managing swallowing difficulties in individuals with dysphagia. Despite having similar viscosities, different thickening agents may exhibit varied extensional properties, potentially influencing bolus formation and the movement of oropharyngeal and hyolaryngeal structures during swallowing. This study aims to evaluate the effects of various thickening agents on swallowing behaviour and the extensional properties of boluses across IDDSI levels 1 to 4, using
