Non-invasive brain stimulation of cerebellar and cortical targets: A systematic review and ALE meta-analysis of cognitive and connectivity outcomes in adults.

BACKGROUND: Beyond motor control, the cerebellum contributes to cognition, emotion, and social functioning through distributed cerebro-cerebellar loops. Neuroimaging and lesion studies implicate these networks in executive control, affect regulation, and social cognition, with relevance for psychiatric and neurodevelopmental conditions. OBJECTIVES: We conducted a systematic review and ALE meta-analysis to determine whether non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) applied to cortical or cerebellar targets modulates task-related brain activity and cerebro-cerebellar connectivity, and whether such

crossMoDA challenge: Evolution of cross-modality domain adaptation techniques for vestibular schwannoma and cochlea segmentation from 2021 to 2023.

The cross-Modality Domain Adaptation (crossMoDA) challenge series, initiated in 2021 in conjunction with the International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI), focuses on unsupervised cross-modality segmentation, learning from contrast-enhanced T1 (ceT1) and transferring to T2 MRI. The task is an extreme example of domain shift chosen to serve as a meaningful and illustrative benchmark. From a clinical application perspective, it aims to automate Vestibular Schwannoma (VS) and cochlea segmentation on T2 scans for more cost-effective VS management.

Task- and resting-state fMRI studies in multiple sclerosis: From regions to systems and time-varying analysis. Current status and future perspective.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurological disorder affecting the central nervous system and features extensive functional brain changes that are poorly understood but relate strongly to clinical impairments. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a non-invasive, powerful technique able to map activity of brain regions and to assess how such regions interact for an efficient brain network. FMRI has been widely applied to study functional brain changes in MS, allowing to investigate functional plasticity consequent to disease-related structural injury. The first studies in MS using acti

Dissociable components of spatial neglect associated with frontal and parietal lesions.

Spatial neglect is a complex neuropsychological disorder, in which patients fail to detect and respond to contralesional stimuli. Recent studies suggest that these symptoms may reflect a combination of different component deficits, associated with different lesion substrates. Thus, damage to right lateral prefrontal and inferior parietal regions produce different degrees of left neglect on cancellation and line bisection tasks, respectively. Here we tested for dissociable behaviors across two tasks designed to assess distinct cognitive processes possibly mediating such components, in 14 patien

The Role of Exercise-Induced Arousal and Exposure to Blue-Enriched Lighting on Vigilance.

It is currently assumed that exposure to an artificial blue-enriched light enhances human alertness and task performance, but recent research has suggested that behavioral effects are influenced by the basal state of arousal. Here, we tested whether the effect of blue-enriched lighting on vigilance performance depends on participants' arousal level. Twenty-four participants completed four sessions (blue-enriched vs. dim light × low vs. high arousal) at 10 pm on four consecutive days, following a repeated-measures design. Participants' arousal was manipulated parametrically through the executio

Modulating Arm Swing Symmetry with Cognitive Load: A Window on Rhythmic Spinal Locomotor Networks in Humans?

In healthy subjects, changes in arm swing symmetry while walking are observed when a cognitive dual task is added, with a tendency toward left-dominant arm swing as cognitive load increases. We applied a modified Stroop word/color naming paradigm to investigate this effect in spinal cord injured (SCI) patients. Six patients with cervical SCI (cSCI), 6 with thoracic injuries (tSCI; all 12 patients American Spinal Injury Association [ASIA] Injury Score [AIS]D), and 12 healthy, matched controls underwent three-dimensional 3D gait analysis while walking normally at a comfortable speed (NW) and whe

The effect of goals and vision on movements: a case study of optic ataxia and limb apraxia.

Normally we can perform a variety of goal-directed movements effortlessly. However, damage to the parietal cortex may dramatically reduce this ability, giving rise to optic ataxia and limb apraxia. Patients with optic ataxia show clear misreaches towards targets when presented in the peripheral visual field, whereas limb apraxia refers to the inability to use common tools or to imitate simple gestures. In the present paper we describe the case of a left-brain damaged patient, who presented both symptoms. We systematically investigated both spatial and temporal parameters of his movements, when

Increased cerebellar activation during sequence learning in DYT1 carriers: an equiperformance study.

We have found that motor sequence learning and related brain activation is impaired in non-manifesting (nm) carriers of the DYT1 deletion for dystonia. In the present study we used a trial-and-error sequence-learning task in conjunction with an equiperformance study design to identify the neural substrates that support sequence learning in nmDYT1 mutation carriers. Six nmDYT1 mutation carriers and six control subjects were scanned with H215O PET during the performance of a trial-and-error guided, kinematically controlled motor sequence learning task and a matched motor execution task. Controls

Determination of muscle fatigue of operating theatre staff using myotonometric measurements.

BACKGROUND: In Latvia, more than 31,000 surgical operations were performed in hospitals in 2023, and work-related musculoskeletal disorders represent one of the most common occupational health problems among healthcare workers. The increasing number of surgeries and the shortage of healthcare personnel in Latvia have led to a higher physical workload among operating theatre staff. This increased workload contributes to muscle fatigue and elevates the risk of work-related musculoskeletal disorders. The aim of this study was to assess changes in muscle frequency and stiffness in order to determi

Whole-body reaching as a measure of dynamic balance in patients with stroke.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether whole-body reaching (WBR) could be a task with adequate and gradable dynamic balance challenges for stroke patients. DESIGN: A total of 23 subjects with hemiplegia, after their first stroke, participated in this study. The degree of dynamic balance challenges of WBR was graded by varying the distance to the targets that the subjects had to reach. A foot-pressure measurement system was used to measure the amount of center-of-pressure shift during performance of WBR and sit-to-stand transfer. The Berg Balance Scale (BBS) was administered, and the BBS total sco

Multitask ST-LSTM model based on UAV hyperspectral remote sensing for wheat yield prediction.

Timely and accurate acquisition of wheat yield is essential for ensuring food security and improving breeding efficiency. However, temporal variation relationships across growth stages have not been fully exploited in existing wheat yield prediction methods. Moreover, prediction accuracy and stability are easily affected by environmental factors and distribution shifts across different yield levels. To address these limitations, this study proposed a multitask stage temporal long short-term memory (ST-LSTM) model. A spectral- and temporal-level data augmentation method was first applied in the

Gaze dynamics prior to navigation support hierarchical planning.

The task of planning future actions in the context of an uncertain world results in massive state spaces that preclude exhaustive search and other strategies explored in the domains of both human decision-making and computational agents. One plausible solution to this dimensionality explosion is to decompose the task into subgoals that match the information geometry of the task at hand. However, how individuals identify a productive hierarchy, and perceive and select subgoals suitable to planning, is not well understood. To investigate this topic, we designed a virtual-reality based behavioral

Time-Varying Directed Interactions in Functional Brain Networks: Modeling and Validation.

Understanding the dynamic nature of brain connectivity is critical for elucidating neural processing, behavior, and brain disorders. Traditional approaches such as sliding-window correlation (SWC) characterize time-varying undirected associations but do not resolve directional interactions, limiting inference about time-resolved information flow in brain networks. We introduce sliding-window prediction correlation (SWpC), which embeds a directional linear time-invariant (LTI) model within each sliding window to estimate time-varying directed functional connectivity (FC). SWpC yields two comple

Benchmarking LLM-based agents for single-cell omics analysis.

BACKGROUND: The surge in single-cell omics data exposes limitations in traditional, manually defined analysis workflows. AI agents offer a paradigm shift, enabling adaptive planning, executable code generation, traceable decisions, and real-time knowledge fusion. However, the lack of a comprehensive benchmark critically hinders progress. RESULTS: We introduce a novel benchmarking evaluation system to rigorously assess agent capabilities in single-cell omics analysis. This system comprises: a unified platform compatible with diverse agent frameworks and LLMs; multidimensional metrics assessing

Stimulation success!? Improved response inhibition performance after prefrontal single-site and condition-and-perturb transcranial magnetic stimulation.

In everyday behaviour, the ability to stop an already initiated action is critical for ensuring both your safety and that of others; for example, when stopping a reaching movement towards a hot stove-top after realising it is hot. Neuroscientific evidence points towards the critical role of several regions in the right prefrontal cortex in the coordination and execution of this response inhibition-specifically the right inferior frontal gyrus (rIFG) and the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (rDLPFC). The present study investigated the effects of different transcranial magnetic stimulation (

Organ masks applied in feature space improve weakly supervised scan-level CT classification.

Automated analysis of computed tomography (CT) scans is an active area of medical imaging research. Classification tasks often rely on scan-level labels without providing spatial information. When using frozen encoders from pretrained models, such as foundation models, enforcing anatomical focus by input-space cropping can shift the input distribution and degrade performance. We investigated whether organ masks can provide scalable anatomical guidance for weakly supervised classification using a frozen self-supervised Swin Transformer. Two strategies were evaluated: input-space organ centering

Cognitive endurance after intense physical effort.

Previous research has primarily examined the effects of cognitive exertion on subsequent physical performance, yet the reciprocal relationship-how intense physical exercise influences cognitive endurance performance-remains largely unexplored. This study investigated the behavioral, subjective, and neurophysiological effects of maximal aerobic effort on sustained cognitive endurance performance. In a pre-registered, within-participant design, 29 physically active participants completed a cognitive task to failure following either exhaustive running at 90 % of their maximal aerobic speed or a 1

The influence of chronotype on school adjustment, sleep and somatic and mental health among adolescents - nationwide sample across one school year.

Evening-type has been previously associated with sleep problems, and mental and somatic health problems among adolescents. We examined how the self-reported chronotype associates with adolescents' health and school adjustment across a school year. Participants (N = 6522) were 12-16-year-old adolescents across Finland. We used generalized linear models to analyze associations between chronotype and school adjustment, and health variables. Generalized estimating equations (GEE) were further used for longitudinal analysis on how chronotype associated with concentration in lessons and susceptibili

Transcranial temporal interference stimulation (tTIS) influences event-related alpha activity during mental rotation.

Non-invasive brain stimulation techniques offer therapeutic potential for neurological and psychiatric disorders. However, current methods are often limited in their stimulation depth. The novel transcranial temporal interference stimulation (tTIS) aims to overcome this limitation by non-invasively targeting deeper brain regions. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy of tTIS in modulating alpha activity during a mental rotation task. The effects of tTIS were compared with transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) and a sham control. Participants were randomly assigned to a

Intact finger representation within primary sensorimotor cortex of musician's dystonia.

Musician's dystonia presents with a persistent deterioration of motor control during musical performance. A predominant hypothesis has been that this is underpinned by maladaptive neural changes to the somatotopic organization of finger representations within primary somatosensory cortex. Here, we tested this hypothesis by investigating the finger-specific activity patterns in the primary somatosensory and motor cortex using functional MRI and multivariate pattern analysis in nine musicians with dystonia and nine healthy musicians. A purpose-built keyboard device allowed characterization of ac
