Distal hamstrings tendons mechanical properties at rest and contraction using free-hand 3-D ultrasonography.

Tendon properties impact human locomotion, influencing sports performance, and injury prevention. Hamstrings play a crucial role in sprinting, particularly the biceps femoris long head (BFlh), which is prone to frequent injuries. It remains uncertain if BFlh exhibits distinct mechanical properties compared to other hamstring muscles. This study utilized free-hand three-dimensional ultrasound to assess morphological and mechanical properties of distal hamstrings tendons in 15 men. Scans were taken in prone position, with hip and knee extended, at rest and during 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80% of maxima

The effects of both jump/land phases and direction on Achilles tendon loading.

BACKGROUND: Athletes in jumping and running sports have a high incidence of Achilles tendon (AT) injuries. We compared AT loading during jumping and landing phases in anteroposterior (AP) and mediolateral (ML) directions. METHODS: Sixteen males (age: 21.6±1.8 years, height: 178.4±6.4 cm, weight: 76.4±11.2 kg) performed single leg AP and ML jump-landings during both propulsive (jump) and braking (land) phases. Inverse dynamics and static optimization were used to determine muscle forces. AT cross sectional area was measured with ultrasound. AT force was divided by cross sectional area to deter

Common overuse tendon problems: A review and recommendations for treatment.

There is a common misconception that symptomatic tendon injuries are inflammatory; because of this, these injuries often are mislabeled as "tendonitis."' Acute inflammatory tendinopathies exist, but most patients seen in primary care will have chronic symptoms suggesting a degenerative condition that should be labeled as "tendinosus" or "tendinopathy." Accurate diagnosis requires physicians to recognize the historical features, anatomy, and useful physical examination maneuvers for these common tendon problems. The natural history is gradually increasing load-related localized pain coinciding …

Case series of traumatic neglected Extensor Hallucis Longus lacerations: choice of surgical treatment based on injury type.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Extensor Hallucis Longus (EHL) tendon rupture is a rare injury of the foot, representing only 1% of overall tendon rupture. Early diagnosis and surgical repair are recommended but there is still no consensus regarding the ideal treatment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a case series of patients with neglected extensor hallucis longus (EHL) tendon rupture. METHODS: We report a case series of 3 patients affected by traumatic neglected EHL lacerations treated with reconstructive surgery using tissue scaffolds, between November 2019 and May 2020. Demographics data,

Surgical anatomy of the triceps brachii tendon: anatomical study and clinical correlation.

BACKGROUND: The triceps tendon has been described as a single unit with contribution from each of the 3 heads of the muscle. An observation … onfluent. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This anatomy has important implications for surgical repair of these tendon injuries. Rupture of the deep triceps insertion alone can occur and lead to weakness of elbow extension with the elbow flexed beyond 90 degrees . Triceps strength should be tested with the elbow fully flexed when injury to the tendinous insertion is suspecte …

Update on tendon repair.

The past decade has seen some remarkable advances in the management of acute tendon repair, both flexors and extensors. New surgical techniques, such as the epitenon-first technique for flexor tendons, combined with early motion rehabilitation, pharmacologic intervention to prevent adhesions, and noninvasive imaging techniques such as MR imaging to assess repair integrity lead to one inescapable conclusion. Continued evolution in attempts to improve the overall results of tendon injury can only mean that hand surgeons have not yet reached the perfect solution in tendon repair strategy. Much pr

Wrist injuries part 2: spotting and treating troublemakers.

Injuries of the wrist, a complex joint, are common in recreational sports. Often, the clinical diagnosis made is the vague "wrist strain or sprain" unless a fracture is seen on x-ray. A thorough assessment, however (as described in part 1), may reveal any of various injuries and syndromes, including scaphoid fractures, scapholunate dissociation, ganglion cysts, or ligamentous or tendon injuries. Treatment ranges from immobilization to corticosteroid injections to surgical repair of a fracture or underlying cause.

The sprained finger that isn't.

Six athletic injuries commonly misdiagnosed as a sprained finger are three types of closed tendon injuries, two types of intra-articular fractures involving the middle joint and a volar plate avulsion of the middle joint. The proper diagnosis can usually be made with a good history, a thorough examination and anteroposterior, lateral and oblique x-rays of the finger. Reconstructive procedures can be performed for missed injuries, but the results are inferior to those obtained with early treatment.

The multiple-ligament injured knee: evaluation, treatment, and results.

The multiple-ligament injured knee is a complex problem in orthopaedic surgery. Most dislocated knees involve tears of the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments (ACL/PCL) and at least 1 collateral ligament complex. Careful assessment of the extremity vascular status is essential because of the possibility of arterial and/or venous compromise. These complex injuries require a systematic approach to evaluation and treatment. Physical examination and imaging studies enable the surgeon to make a correct diagnosis and to formulate a treatment plan. Arthroscopically assisted combined ACL/PCL rec

Dynamic splinting after extensor tendon repair in zones V to VII.

This retrospective study evaluates a dynamic active motion protocol for extensor tendon repairs in zones V to VII. Fifty-eight patients with 87 extensor tendon injuries were examined. Using Geldmacher's and Kleinert and Verdan's evaluation systems, the results were graded as "excellent" and "good" in more than 94%, and as "satisfactory" in the remainder. The need for secondary tenolysis was low (6%), and no other surgical complication occurred.

Types and epidemiology of tendinopathy.

During the last few decades, the role of sports and physical activity has become more and more important in all modern communities. The risk of tendon injury has thus increased, and prevention has become important. Epidemiologic studies are important when planning prevention programs for tendon injuries. Because of individual sport cultures and different sport habits in different countries, national epidemiologic studies are of importance in each individual country.

Tendon entrapments and dislocations in ankle and hindfoot fractures: evaluation with multidetector computed tomography.

The purpose of this study was to assess the incidence of tendon entrapments and tendon dislocations associated with ankle and hindfoot fractures in patients studied by multidetector computed tomography (MDCT). Additionally, we describe particular tendon injuries associated with specific fractures. This was a retrospective review of all individuals with a trauma-protocol CT for suspected ankle and/or hindfoot fractures during a consecutive 41-month time period at a single Level I Trauma Center. Each patient's images were evaluated by two radiologists and an orthopedic surgeon for tendon entrapm…

Snapping ankles: peroneal tendon subluxation and dislocation.

Peroneal tendon dislocation or subluxation is an orthopaedic condition that usually occurs as a result of injury to the superior peroneal retinaculum. The peroneal muscles are located in the lateral compartment of the leg, and their tendons run in the retromalleolar groove anchored by the superior peroneal retinaculum. Peroneal instability is usually classified using the Eckert and Davies classification, which was modified by Oden into a four-point grading system. The mechanism of injury is typically sudden forced dorsiflexion, resulting in aggressive tautness of the peroneal tendons, combined

Bilateral Achilles Tendon Ruptures in the NFL.

Background: Achilles tendon ruptures (ATR) can have devastating results for athletes in the National Football League (NFL). While many studies have examined the effects of an ipsilateral ATR, there are no reports on the impact of bilateral ATRs on NFL athlete performance. Methods: Publicly available online injury data for NFL athletes who sustained bilateral ATRs between the start of the 2007 season and the start of the 2021 season were queried using online news and sports analysis web sources. Results: After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 5 NFL athletes were identified. The findin
