Neural correlates of rapid familiarization to novel taste.

The gustatory cortex (GC) plays a pivotal role in taste perception, with neural ensemble responses reflecting taste quality and influencing behavior. Recent work, however, has shown that GC taste responses change across sessions of novel taste exposure in taste-naïve rats. Here, we use single-trial analyses to explore changes in the cortical taste-code on the scale of individual trials. Contrary to the traditional view of taste perception as innate, our findings suggest rapid, experience-dependent changes in GC responses during initial taste exposure trials. Specifically, we find that early re

Amusia due to rhythm agnosia in a musician with left hemisphere damage: a non-auditory supramodal defect.

A case of a severe receptive and expressive amusia in a professional musician following a left hemisphere vascular stroke is reported. Recognition and production of single tones and random tone sequences were found to be surprisingly well preserved. In contrast, the recognition and production of simple rhythm patterns were grossly disturbed. It is suggested that amusia is due to the demonstrated rhythm disturbance. Moreover, it has been found that the defect in recognition and reproduction of rhythms was manifested regardless of the modality of perception, i.e. whether rhythm patterns were per

School Experiences and Anxiety Trajectories Among Youth with Intellectual Disabilities.

This study investigated how the school experiences and personal characteristics of youth with Intellectual Disabilities (ID) contribute to their longitudinal trajectories of anxiety. To this end, we relied on a sample of 390 youth with mild (48.2%) to moderate (51.8%) levels of ID, aged from 11 to 22 (M = 15.70), and recruited in Canada (n = 140) and Australia (n = 250). Across three yearly time points, all participants completed self-report measures of anxiety, school climate, and victimization. Our results revealed a slight normative decrease in anxiety over time and showed that experiences

Effect of Parental Perception on the Prevalence of Adolescent Internet Gaming Disorder During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

OBJECTIVE: During the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, several studies have found that Internet usage and gaming times have increased among adolescents. Parents' Internet literacy and attitudes toward Internet gaming have been reported to affect children's Internet gaming disorder (IGD). We hypothesized that parents' attitudes toward Internet use and gaming would affect the prevalence of IGD among adolescents. METHODS: A total of 199 mothers of children who played Internet games were surveyed online to gather information regarding their demographic characteristics, children's Internet

Axonal Conduction Delay Shapes the Precision of the Spatial Hearing in A Spiking Neural Network Model of Auditory Brainstem.

One method by which the mammalian sound localization pathway localizes sound sources is by analyzing the microsecond-level difference between the arrival times of a sound at the two ears. However, how the neural circuits in the auditory brainstem precisely integrate signals from the two ears, and what the underlying mechanisms are, remains to be understood. Recent studies have reported that variations of axon myelination in the auditory brainstem produces various axonal conduction velocities and sophisticated temporal dynamics, which have not been well characterized in most existing models of

Perseus: perception with semantic endoscopic understanding and SLAM.

PURPOSE: Natural orifice surgeries minimize the need for incisions and reduce recovery time compared to open surgery; however, they require higher expertise due to visualization and orientation challenges. To enable reliable scene understanding for surgeon guidance and automation, we propose a perception pipeline that generates semantically informed 3D reconstructions. METHODS: We bring learning-based segmentation, depth estimation, and 3D reconstruction modules together. Through segmentation, we delineate tumor and prostate lobe borders, and through depth estimation and real-time SLAM-based

A new way to quantify the fidelity of imitation: preliminary results with gesture sequences.

Imitation is a common and effective way for humans to learn new behaviors. Until now, the study of imitation has been hampered by the challenge of measuring how well an attempted imitation corresponds to its stimulus model. We describe a new method for quantifying the fidelity with which observers imitate complex series of gestures. Wearing a data glove that transduced movements of their digits, subjects viewed and then reproduced a sequence of gestures from memory. The velocity profile of each digit's flexion or extension was used to segment movements made during an imitation into gestures th

Attentional capture by colour and motion in cerebral achromatopsia.

Cerebral achromatopsia is a rare condition in which damage to the ventromedial occipital area of the cortex results in the loss of colour experience. Nevertheless, cortically colour-blind patients can still use wavelength variation to perceive form and motion. In a series of six experiments we examined whether colour could also direct exogenous attention in an achromatopsic observer. We employed the colour singleton paradigm, the phi motion effect, and the correspondence process to assess attentional modulation. Although colour singletons failed to capture attention, a motion signal, based sol

Perceptions of risk during pregnancy amongst urban women in northeast Brazil.

The aim of the study was to explore the influences on the perceptions of potential risks of pregnancy in a developing country. The perceptions were analyzed in order to construct a local explanatory model of health which could be compared to the activities promoted by the health services. The relationship of perceptions of risk to women's reported motivation for using the health services is assessed. The findings are presented in relation to four specific research questions: 1, How do women view the state of being pregnant? 2, What potential risks are associated with being pregnant? 3, How are

Using Eye tracking to Examine Young Adults' Visual Attention to E-cigarette Advertising Features and Associated Positive E-cigarette Perceptions.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the influence of e-cigarette marketing features on the antecedents of e-cigarette use. PURPOSE: Using an eye-tracking experiment, we examined visual attention to common features in e-cigarette ads and its associations with positive e-cigarette perceptions among young adults. METHODS: Young adults (ages 18-29) who smoke cigarettes (n = 40) or do not use tobacco (n = 71) viewed 30 e-cigarette ads on a computer screen. Eye-tracking technology measured dwell time (fixation duration) and entry time (time to first fixation) for 14 pre-defined ad features. Particip

Visual Distortions in Human Amblyopia Are Correlated with Deficits in Contrast Sensitivity.

Amblyopia (lazy eye) is a developmental disorder of the visual cortex that causes deficits in visual acuity and shape perception. The loss of visual acuity is thought to originate from weakened cortical responses to stimuli. Here, we provide evidence for a similar mechanism to explain distortions in shape perception. We introduce a computational model that simulates perceptual distortions of grating patterns drawn by humans with amblyopia (Barrett et al., 2003). The model simulates a large variety of distortions by performing a weighted sum of rectified sinusoidal gratings (average, 3.3 gratin

Who's more vulnerable? A generational investigation of COVID-19 perceptions' effect on Organisational citizenship Behaviours in the MENA region: job insecurity, burnout and job satisfaction as mediators.

BACKGROUND: This paper is an empirical investigation that examines a path model linking COVID-19 perceptions to organisational citizenship behaviour (OCBs) via three mediators: job insecurity, burnout, and job satisfaction. The research examines the path model invariance spanning Generations X, Y, and Z. Three countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) were the focus of the study. METHODS: The data was collected from a sample of employees in service companies (n = 578). We used a Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) to analyse the data. RESULTS: Our findings

Cortical responses to Mozart's sonata enhance spatial-reasoning ability.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we examined the effects of Mozart's music on spatial-reasoning ability by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). METHODS: The subjects comprised five males and five females (aged 25-35 years). They were administered the seven original core subtests of the Japanese version of the Tanaka B-type intelligence test, which includes a spatial-reasoning subtest. We used three different music conditions: Mozart's sonata (K. 448), Beethoven and a silent control condition. Moreover, we used optical topography to assess the effects of music on brain function with a spatial-reasoning

Policing Pot: State-Level Cannabis Arrests Increase Perceived Risks and Costs but Not Use.

Legal sanctions are purported to play a role in cannabis use and related consequences. General models of deterrence suggest that increases in arrests should decrease consumption by heightening perceptions of the negative consequences of use as well as the likelihood and severity of penalties. The present study examined if arrests resulting from cannabis possession relate to cannabis consumption, perceptions of use, and likelihood and severity of related penalties. Combining data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health with the FBI Uniform Crime Report (2002-2013) allowed for the estima

"It's how we deal": Perceptions of LGB peers' use of alcohol and other drugs to cope and sexual minority adults' own coping motivated substance use following the Pulse nightclub shooting.

Sexual minority stress experiences (e.g. prejudice, victimization, etc.) and peer substance use norms (e.g. peers' frequency of use and quantity consumed) are important correlates of alcohol and drug use in sexual minority populations. The current study incorporates both of these by examining LGB individuals' perceptions of peers' use of alcohol and other drugs to cope with a sexual minority stressor, and whether perceptions of peer coping norms relate to one's own coping-motivated substance use in response to the stressor. Three-hundred and seven sexual minority males and females who identifi

Why Do We Need to Know What the Public Thinks about Nanotechnology?

Public debate on nanotechnology is a large topic within governments, research agencies, industry and non-government organisations. But depending who you talk to the perception of what the public thinks about nanotechnology can be very varied. To define coherent policy and to invest in research and development that aligns with public preferences, needs more than just perceptions of public perceptions. Public attitude studies are vital in understanding what the public really think, but they need to go further than simplistic polling and should examine factors such as changes over time, drivers o
