105° field of view non-contact handheld swept-source optical coherence tomography.

We demonstrate a handheld swept-source optical coherence tomography (OCT) system with a 400 kHz vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) light source, a non-contact approach, and an unprecedented single shot 105° field of view (FOV). We also implemented a spiral scanning pattern allowing real-time visualization with improved scanning efficiency. To the best of our knowledge, this is the widest FOV achieved in a portable non-contact OCT retinal imaging system to date. Improvements to the FOV may aid the evaluation of retinal diseases such as retinopathy of prematurity, where important vit

Design and optimization of line-field optical coherence tomography at visible wavebands.

Parallel line-field Fourier-domain optical coherence tomography (LF-FDOCT) has emerged to enable relatively higher speeds than the conventional FDOCT system. In the LF-FDOCT, one B-scan is captured at a time instead of scanning the beam to acquire hundreds of A-scans. On the other hand, spectroscopic OCT using the visible waveband provides absorption information over multiple wavelengths at each voxel. This information of spectral absorption enables quantitative measurement of blood oxygenation, voxel by voxel. Here, we presented the design and optimization of a LF-FDOCT system at the visible

Optical Coherence Tomography Revealing Ganglion Cell Loss in Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus.

BACKGROUND: Although there may theoretically be a disturbance in the eye or the visual pathways due to abnormal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH), it has not been studied systemically. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive, reproducible procedure for quantitative and qualitative analysis of retinal morphology. METHODS: OCT was used to study the eye fundus before and after a CSF tap test in patients with iNPH compared with healthy individuals (HIs). Twelve patients with iNPH (6 females and 6 males) with a median age of 76 years

Early Recognition of Raised Intracranial Pressure in Craniosynostosis Using Optical Coherence Tomography.

OBJECTIVE: Craniosynostosis can be associated with raised intracranial pressure (ICP), which can pose deleterious effects on the brain and vision if untreated. Estimating ICP in children is challenging, whilst gold standard direct intracranial measurement of ICP is invasive and carries risk. This systematic review aims to evaluate the role of optical coherence tomography (OCT), a noninvasive imaging technique, for detecting raised ICP in children with craniosynostosis. METHODS: The authors conducted a systematic review of the literature published from inception until 19 August, 2019 in the Co

Visibility of microvessels in Optical Coherence Tomography angiography depends on angular orientation.

Optical Coherence Tomography angiography (OCTA) is a widespread tool for depth-resolved imaging of chorioretinal vasculature with single microvessel resolution. To improve the clinical interpretation of OCTA, the conditions affecting visualization of microvessels must be defined. Here we inject a scattering plasma tracer (Intralipid) during OCTA imaging of the anesthetized rat eye. In the retina, we find that interlaminar (vertical) vessels that connect laminae have one-fourth to one-third the OCTA red blood cell to tracer (RBC-to-tracer) signal ratio of intralaminar (horizontal) vessels. This

Optical coherence tomography in adult adrenoleukodystrophy: a cross-sectional and longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) encompasses different neurological phenotypes, ranging from the most severe cerebral forms (C-ALD) to the less severe adrenomyeloneuropathy (AMN). As visual system can be varyingly involved, we aimed at exploring whether optical coherence tomography (OCT) may detect retinal abnormalities and their longitudinal changes in adult ALD patients. METHODS: In this cross-sectional and longitudinal study, we measured the thicknesses of peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL), macular ganglion cell complex (mGCC), and segmented inner and outer macula at ba

Swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography of diabetic papillopathy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: We report a case of diabetic papillopathy (DP) diagnosed using swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA). CASE PRESENTATION: A 52-year-old man was referred for evaluation of a swollen optic disc in both eyes. His best-corrected visual acuity was 20/40 in the right eye and 20/100 in the left eye. Fundus examination demonstrated a swollen optic disc, splinter hemorrhages, and radially oriented, dilated vessels over the optic disc in both eyes. Laboratory tests revealed previously unknown diabetes. SS-OCTA was performed to rule out neovascularization of the disc

Imaging the Choroid: From Indocyanine Green Angiography to Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography.

The choroid is the vascular structure nourishing the retinal pigment epithelium and the outer retina and it plays a key role in the homeostasis of the eye both under physiological and pathological conditions. In the last 20 years we have moved from "guessing" what was happening beyond the retinal pigment epithelium to actually visualize structural and functional changes of the choroid in vivo noninvasively. In this review we describe the state of the art of choroidal imaging, focusing on the multiple techniques available in the clinical and research setting including indocyanine green angiogra
