Systemic host immuno-inflammatory response to dental extractions and periodontitis.

OBJECTIVES: Little is known about the host immuno-inflammatory response to dental extractions. The purpose of this pilot clinical study was to explore the effect of both periodontitis and dental extractions on the host systemic immuno-inflammatory response. STUDY DESIGN: We recruited and collected baseline blood samples on 41 essentially healthy patients. A subset of 22 subjects underwent single (n = 11) or multiple (n = 11) tooth extractions with additional blood samples taken at 1 hour following single tooth extraction and at 8 and 24 hours following multiple tooth extractions. Samples were

Oral health status and its predictors among hemodialysis patients in Saudi Arabia: a cross-sectional study.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its treatment through hemodialysis can lead to significant oral complications that impair nutrition and quality of life. However, data on the oral health status of Saudi patients undergoing hemodialysis remain limited. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and predictors of xerostomia, taste alterations, dental caries, tooth wear, gingival inflammation, and tooth loss among hemodialysis patients in the Ha’il region of Saudi Arabia. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 314 adult CKD patients receiving regular hemodialysis. Data were collected through

Spinal bone density and tooth loss in a cohort of postmenopausal women.

Osteoporosis has been suggested to contribute to the edentulous condition. However, studies specifically designed to examine the relationship between tooth loss and osteoporosis are scarce, and reported results have been mixed. This study investigated the correlation between tooth loss and spinal bone density in a nonHispanic white female population. Forty-four subjects were recruited and divided into high and low spinal bone density groups based on whether the bone density was higher or lower than the age-adjusted population mean bone density. Missing teeth and periodontal status in these gro

Actinomyces endogenous endophthalmitis in a cat following multiple dental extractions.

An 8-year-old, brachycephalic, mixed breed cat underwent full mouth tooth extractions for the treatment of tooth root abscessation. Subsequently, the cat developed anterior uveitis refractory to topical therapy that eventually necessitated enucleation. Actinomyces species were isolated from both the tooth root abscesses and the anterior chamber after enucleation. Histopathology of the enucleated eye revealed panophthalmitis with abundant intralesional bacteria morphologically consistent with Actinomyces. Between the time of tooth root extraction and enucleation (20 weeks), the cat was diagnose

Radiographic and clinical assessments of destructive periodontal disease.

191 subjects, aged 35-80 years, were examined for periodontal disease using radiographic and clinical means. At all approximal tooth surfaces, assessments were made of (i) the distance on radiographs between the cementoenamel junction and the most coronal level of the alveolar bone, and (ii) probing attachment loss. The results revealed that (i) a strong correlation existed between the radiographic and the clinical assessments (r = 0.80, p = 0.0001), (ii) the difference between the 2 types of assessments was within 2 mm in 92% of the tooth sites examined, (iii) the degree of agreement between

Relative contribution of restorative treatment to tooth extraction in a teaching institution.

Teeth can be extracted due to multiple factors. The aim of this retrospective cross-sectional study was to identify the relative contribution of restorative treatments to tooth loss. The study reviewed records of 826 patients (1102 teeth). Patient's gender, age and education were obtained. In addition to the main reason for extraction (caries, periodontal disease, pre-prosthetic extraction, restorative failure and remaining root), the following information was collected about each extracted tooth: type, the status of caries if any (primary or secondary) and pulpal status (normal or reversible

Predictors of tooth loss over 10 years in adult and elderly Chinese.

This study describes the incidence of tooth loss over a 10-year period in a population of rural Chinese, initially aged between 20 and 80 years. Among the 587 persons who participated in a baseline examination in 1984, 440 persons were available for a follow-up study in 1994. A total of 31 persons, mainly aged 50+ years at baseline, had become completely edentulous. Between 45% and 96% of the persons lost at least one tooth, and the average number of teeth lost ranged between 1.0 and 7.2. The distribution of the number of teeth lost was skew, indicating that a minor group of subjects had a sub

Intentional Replantation in Combination with Fibroblast Growth Factor-2 Application and Orthodontic Tooth Extrusion for Periodontal Regeneration in the Treatment of Severe Endodontic-Periodontal Lesions.

Endodontic-periodontal lesions are characterized by the involvement of the pulp and periodontal disease in the same tooth. Despite successful root canal treatment, if the majority of bone support has been lost from periodontitis, the tooth may have a poor prognosis. In severe endodonticperiodontal lesions, the periodontal tissue regenerates poorly because of the significant loss of the periodontal ligament and cementum, poor tooth stability, and bone defect morphology that is unfavorable for bone regeneration. To overcome these difficult situations, osteotomy of the replantation bed and tooth

Autogenous Transplantation for Replacing a Hopeless Tooth.

Autogenous tooth transplantation (ATT) is a simple and reasonable choice for replacing the missing teeth when a proper donor tooth is available. This report presents a case of successful ATT of a maxillary right third molar for replacement of mandibular right second molar with a concomitant endodontic-periodontal disease. The mandibular second molar was believed to be hopeless due to a severe damage to coronal tooth structure, inappropriate root canal treatment and apical radiolucency. After extraction of mandibular second molar and maxillary third molar (the donor), the tooth was re-implanted

Fully functional bioengineered tooth replacement as an organ replacement therapy.

Current approaches to the development of regenerative therapies have been influenced by our understanding of embryonic development, stem cell biology, and tissue engineering technology. The ultimate goal of regenerative therapy is to develop fully functioning bioengineered organs which work in cooperation with surrounding tissues to replace organs that were lost or damaged as a result of disease, injury, or aging. Here, we report a successful fully functioning tooth replacement in an adult mouse achieved through the transplantation of bioengineered tooth germ into the alveolar bone in the lost

Physical Activity and Untreated Dental Caries in Brazil: Implications for Population-Based Caries Risk Assessment.

Background/Objectives: Oral diseases are a major public health challenge and share behavioral and socioeconomic determinants with other noncommunicable diseases. Although physical activity has been proposed as one of these shared determinants, evidence at the population level remains limited. This study investigated the association between physical activity and oral health indicators using nationwide Brazilian surveillance data. Methods: An ecological study was conducted using aggregated data from the Surveillance System for Risk and Protective Factors for Chronic Diseases by Telephone Survey

Diet, Nutrition, and Oral Health in Older Adults: A Review of the Literature.

Diet, nutrition, and oral health are closely linked. Malnutrition is a challenging health concern in older adults that is associated with physical decline affecting their daily activities and quality of life. The aim of this review is to provide an evidence-based summary of the relationship between diet and nutrition and oral health in older adults and its implications. The World Health Organization has declared healthy ageing a priority of its work on ageing. The American Dental Association confirmed the bidirectional relationship between diet and nutrition and oral health. The literature sho

Cross-talk between clinical and host-response parameters of periodontitis in smokers.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Periodontal diseases are a major public health concern leading to tooth loss and have also been shown to be associated with several chronic systemic diseases. Smoking is a major risk factor for the development of numerous systemic diseases, as well as periodontitis. While it is clear that smokers have a significantly enhanced risk for developing periodontitis leading to tooth loss, the population varies regarding susceptibility to disease associated with smoking. This investigation focused on identifying differences in four broad sets of variables, consisting of: (i)

Rapid Bone Healing after Intentional Replantation of a Molar with Apical Actinomycosis.

Actinomycosis is a rare lesion of the jaws and may present as periapical pathosis; therefore, it is essential to be correctly diagnosed and managed. This case presentation describes management of a tooth with a symptomatic apical periodontitis caused by Actinomyces species supplemented with medicine prescription. A woman was referred for endodontic management of tooth #19. The tooth had a history of previous nonsurgical endodontic retreatment. Clinically, the tooth was very sensitive to percussion. Radiographic evaluation showed a large periapical lesion. Intentional replantation (IR) was plan

Dimensionally Engineered Nanotherapeutics for Pulpitis and Periodontitis: From Structural Design to Artificial Intelligence-Enabled Precision Therapy.

Pulpitis (Pul) and periodontitis (PD) are oral infectious diseases with extremely high global prevalence. These pathologies can induce severe pain, significantly elevate the risk of tooth mobility and eventual tooth loss, and have been confirmed to be closely correlated with multiple chronic systemic disorders including diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases. Conventional clinical interventions for these diseases are frequently characterized by incomplete debridement and inefficient drug delivery. Additionally, the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance presents an ongoing challenge

A Compound Heterozygous Cathepsin C Mutations Causing Phenotypical Papillion Lafevre/Haim-Munk Syndrome: A Case Report and Review of WES Findings.

INTRODUCTION: Cathepsin C (CTSC), a lysosomal cysteine protease, acts as a primary activator of several critical immune enzymes. Mutations in CTSC can cause a variety of conditions, primarily Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome (PLS) and Haim-Munk syndrome (HMS), both rare autosomal recessive palmoplantar keratoderma (PPK) diseases. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 24-year-old female patient. Her past medical history revealed an undiagnosed condition associated with symptoms of thick, dry, and cracked skin. Additionally, she is of Myanmar heritage and has shared a family history of similar symptoms
