The severity of dental fluorosis in children exposed to water with a high fluoride content for various periods of time.

Inhabitants of the Ikeno district of Japan were accidentally exposed to drinking water containing 7.8 ppm fluoride (F) for 12 years, after which water with 0.2 ppm F was substituted. Dental examinations of local inhabitants revealed that only children aged seven years or less at the introduction or aged 11 months or more at the removal of the high-F water had fluorosis. Regular inspections were made of the 86 children between those age limits. The severity of fluorosis in three tooth types (first permanent molars, upper central incisors, and first premolars) was assessed and related to the per

Soft-Tissue-Focused Orthodontics in Patients With Stage IV Periodontitis: Segmented Arch Technique and Skeletal Anchorage: A Case Report.

Orthodontic treatment in patients with advanced periodontitis is often considered high-risk due to impaired periodontal anchorage and increased susceptibility to treatment-related damage. This report presents a 60-year-old woman with stage IV periodontitis, upper anterior protrusion (overjet 7.5 mm), crowding, and advanced vertical bone loss. Treatment with a maxillary fixed appliance and skeletal anchorage over 9 months enabled intrusion and retraction of the anterior teeth, closure of a lateral diastema, and reduction of overjet, achieving functional and aesthetic improvement without comprom

BEWE 2.0: Basic erosive tooth wear examination revisited: Introducing an additional level for more severe erosive tooth wear.

The Basic Erosive Wear Examination (BEWE) was proposed in 2008 as a screening tool for tooth wear. The original aim was to create a simple, convenient screening tool to prompt a clinician to record tooth wear. It was not intended to be accurate and was matched to the basic periodontal examination (BPE). Since that time it has been incorporated into dental practice software and has been adopted by Dentists. But the original screening tool created a ceiling effect, particularly at grade 3 which marked a significant progression from slight wear over the surface to almost complete obliteration of

An Aspirated Tooth Masquerading As Lung Cancer: A Unique Case Report.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Tooth aspiration, while commonly linked to predisposing conditions such as loose teeth, facial surgeries, or injuries, can also affect patients without apparent risk factors. Such small foreign body aspirations may go undiagnosed for many months as patients often tolerate the symptoms, such as chronic cough. However, the protracted course of unaddressed foreign body aspiration has the potential to resemble symptoms of malignancy, including persistent hemoptysis, weight loss, and fatigue. In this report, we detail the case of a 51-year-old man with underlying chronic obstructive pulmonary disea

Synchrotron X-ray diffraction to understand crystallographic texture of enamel affected by Hunter syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether Hunter syndrome (MPS II) affects the crystallographic texture (preferred orientation) of enamel. DESIGN: Synchrotron X-ray diffraction, being a state of the art technique, has been used to determine the enamel crystallite orientation in enamel affected by Hunter syndrome (MPS II). The incisal, lingual and cervical regions of the MPS II affected tooth were observed and compared to healthy tooth. RESULTS: It was observed that there is a loss of organization of crystallites in deciduous incisal enamel affected by Hunter syndrome (MPS II) as compared to healthy de

Etiology, Classification and Management of Ectopic Eruption of Permanent First Molars.

Ectopic eruption of a permanent tooth involves abnormal resorption of a portion or all of the adjacent primary tooth. Among the most commonly ectopically erupted teeth are the permanent first molars. Ectopically erupting molars may require intervention to allow for full eruption, or they may spontaneously self-correct and erupt into occlusion. Decisions regarding the necessity of intervention, its ideal timing, and intervention type are multifactorial. Treatment options for the ectopically erupting permanent first molar include the elastomeric separator, brass wire, pre-fabricated clip separat

Interdisciplinary index of prosthodontic/substitution orthodontic treatment need for patients with missing teeth.

The need for treatment in cases of missing teeth may result from aesthetic demands or functional impairment, although tooth loss itself does not necessarily constitute a need for prosthetic replacement. In selected cases, restorative treatment can be replaced by tooth autotransplantation or substitution orthodontic treatment. The authors have tried to make an index based not on missing particular teeth, but on the presence of spacing requiring restoration. An attempt has been made to categorize the restorative treatment need. Orthodontic treatment was considered, when it could completely elimi…

Osteoporosis: the effect on maxillary bone resorption and therapeutic possibilities by means of implant prostheses--a literature review and clinical considerations.

Osteoporosis is a systemic disease in which the skeletal condition is characterized by a decreased mass of normally mineralized bone. It is considered the most common metabolic bone disease, and it constitutes a major public health problem. Given the evidence that alveolar processes provide the bony framework for tooth support, the decline of skeletal mass has to be correlated with an increased risk of oral bone loss and has a negative consequence on tooth stability. Data from past research confirm that aging and estrogen depletion have a negative influence on both tooth retention and residual

Hypophosphatasia and the importance of the general dental practitioner - a case series and discussion of upcoming treatments.

Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is an inherited metabolic disorder that results in poorly mineralised bones and teeth. Clinical symptoms vary widely from mild dental anomalies to fatal fetal defects. The most common dental symptoms include exfoliation of the primary incisors before the age of three with little or no root resorption, large pulp chambers, alveolar bone loss and thin dentinal walls. There is generally minimal periodontal inflammation associated with the bony destruction and tooth loss. The general dental practitioner is usually the first clinician to spot signs of the milder forms of HPP.…

Progressive tooth pattern changes in Cilk1-deficient mice depending on Hedgehog signaling.

Primary cilia function as critical sensory organelles that mediate multiple signaling pathways, including the Hedgehog (Hh) pathway, which is essential for organ patterning and morphogenesis. Disruptions in Hh signaling have been implicated in supernumerary tooth formation and molar fusion in mutant mice. Cilk1, a highly conserved serine/threonine-protein kinase localized within primary cilia, plays a critical role in ciliary transport. Loss of Cilk1 results in severe ciliopathy phenotypes, including polydactyly, edema, and cleft palate. However, the role of Cilk1 in tooth development remains

Loss of dental pulp potentially increased the risk of Alzheimer's dementia.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Chronic periodontitis and tooth loss contribute to cognitive decline. Since many biological processes are shared by loss of teeth and loss of pulps, this study investigated the potential association between loss of pulp and the development of dementia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort analysis was conducted to investigate the association between dental treatment and the development of dementia. The records of dental treatment during the 10 years prior to the first diagnosis of dementia were extracted from the Elderly Cohort Database of the National Health Info…

The osteoclastic activity in apical distal region of molar mesial roots affects orthodontic tooth movement and root resorption in rats.

The utilization of optimal orthodontic force is crucial to prevent undesirable side effects and ensure efficient tooth movement during orthodontic treatment. However, the sensitivity of existing detection techniques is not sufficient, and the criteria for evaluating optimal force have not been yet established. Here, by employing 3D finite element analysis methodology, we found that the apical distal region (A-D region) of mesial roots is particularly sensitive to orthodontic force in rats. Tartrate-resistant acidic phosphatase (TRAP)-positive osteoclasts began accumulating in the A-D region un

Efficacy of Autogenous Dentin Biomaterial on Alveolar Ridge Preservation: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: After tooth extraction, alveolar bone resorption is inevitable. This clinical phenomenon challenges dental surgeons aiming to restore esthetic and function. Alveolar ridge preservation can be applied to minimize dimensional changes with a new socket grafting material, an autogenous dentin graft, produced by mechanically and chemically processing natural teeth. This study assessed the safety and efficacy of using autogenous dentin biomaterial in alveolar ridge preservation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with nonrestorable maxillary anterior teeth bounded by natural sound teeth we
