The nitro-blue tetrasolum (NBT) test was used for the study of the bactericidal capacity of blood monocytes in 30 healthy subjects and 86 pulmonary tuberculosis patients. Tuberculous brain abscess is a rare manifestation of tuberculosis of the central nervous system. We report a case of a 6-year-old girl with a pontine tuberculous abscess, who presented with fever and quadriparesis and recovered completely after stereotactic aspiration and antituberculous treatment with four drugs (isoniazid, rifampicin, pyrazinamide, and ethambutol). Tuberculous abscess was confirmed based on findings of magnetic resonance imaging, a positive tuberculin test, and the presence of acid fast bacilli in smear and culture of abscess aspirate.

Of 38 cases of uveitis examined from 1970 to 1980 in which a tuberculous cause was considered, we classified 18 as presumed tuberculous on the basis of a positive response to isoniazid. There has been a vaccine against tuberculosis (TB) since 1921. This vaccine contains Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG), a live attenuated strain of the tubercle bacterium Mycobacterium bovis. The vaccine is fairly effective in children, but protection is poor in adults. Protection lasts about 15 years. The vaccine is safe for immunocompetent people, provided it is administered intracutaneously and at the correct dose.
