Thalasselis syndrome and genetic theories on keratoconus.

BACKGROUND: Previous theories of the pathogenesis of keratoconus have only described partial aspects of the disease. METHODS: Studies are reviewed that have demonstrated a statistical and physiological relation between keratoconus, magnesium deficiency, type A behavior, and allergy, which constitute the Thalasselis Syndrome. RESULTS: The Thalasselis syndrome integrates old and new theories on keratoconus, mitral valve prolapse, and tetany/menopause. Keratoconus is also associated with genetic diseases like Down syndrome, Marfan syndrome, and other conditions related to collagen disturbance a

Type A behaviour pattern: a concept revisited.

It is generally accepted that the type A behaviour pattern is a risk factor in the development of coronary artery disease (CAD). Type A people have been characterized as hard-driving, competitive, aggressive and hurried. A number of investigators have attempted to correlate these facets of type A behaviour with increased risks of CAD. However, there have been conflicting results, primarily owing to differences in methods and CAD outcomes and inconsistencies associated with measuring the type A behaviour pattern. As a result, researchers have begun to focus on subcomponents of the type A behavi

A Case of Paraneoplastic Limbic Encephalitis in a Patient with Invasive Thymoma with Anti-Glutamate Receptor Antibody-Positive Cerebrospinal Fluid: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Thymoma is known to cause autoimmune neuromuscular disease. However, anti-glutamate receptor antibody limbic encephalitis (LE) with thymoma is relatively rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A 68-year-old woman was admitted with progressive memory impairment and personality change. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed high intensity in the bilateral limbic areas on T2-weighted fluid-attenuation inversion recovery (FLAIR) images. Chest computed tomography revealed a mass in the anterior mediastinum. Surgical resection of the tumor, which was consistent with a type B3 thymoma, result

A study of young-age and mid-life homicidal women admitted to a psychiatric hospital for pre-trial evaluation.

The authors compared a group of young female homicidal offenders with a group of middle-aged homicidal women as to demographic data, psychopathology, physical disorders and type of victims chosen. Young women tend to have low socioeconomic status, have antisocial personality disorder, and/or schizophrenia as psychiatric diagnoses and most likely kill their children, while mid-life women tend to have slightly higher socioeconomic status, suffer from affective disorder and alcoholism and have more frequent physical disorders and most likely murder their spouses. A significant finding noted among

Type A behaviour, borderline hyperventilation and psychological, psychosomatic and neuroendocrine responses to mental task load.

Psychological, psychosomatic and neuroendocrine (in blood) responses to mental task load were investigated in relation to Type A behaviour and borderline hyperventilation. For this purpose 32 apparently healthy, male volunteers were classified on the basis of their scores on the Jenkins Activity Survey (JAS) and on a questionnaire assessing hyperventilation related symptoms (HRS). The subjects performed a memory search task in which a monetary bonus could be won or lost. At rest higher HRS scores were related to increased acute psychosomatic symptom scores and higher JAS scores to higher prola

Can and should type A behaviour be changed?

Both Type A behaviour and the component of hostility can be reduced by a number of different psychological interventions and such reductions are associated with reduced cardiac morbidity in patients with coronary heart disease. Reductions in Type A behaviour are not associated with significant changes in other risk factors nor with unwanted side effects such as reduced professional effectiveness.

Smoking behavior of type A and type B smokers.

Retrospective surveys have compared smoking between Type A and Type B individuals; however, prospective studies using objective measures have not been reported. In Study 1, we used an ambulatory smoking recorder to compare the smoking behavior of Type A and Type B smokers. Individual smoking behaviors and the derived tobacco and nicotine exposures were similar for Type A and Type B smokers. In Study 2, we compared serum nicotine before and after smoking a cigarette between Type A and Type B smokers. Pre-cigarette and post-cigarette nicotine levels and nicotine boost were similar for Type A and

[Hyperkinetic syndrome (attention deficit-/hyperactivity disorder) in adulthood].

The clinical picture of adult hyperkinetic syndrome (HKS) or attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder is nearly unknown in Germany. It can be estimated, that approximately one third of affected children also show symptoms as adults. In the combined type of the syndrome symptoms of inattention as well as of hyperactivity and impulsivity are present, a predominantly inattentive or hyperactive-impulsive type is possible. Retrospective diagnosis of HKS in childhood can be difficult. Disorganization, emotional disturbances and stress intolerance are common in adults with HKS as well as residual sym

Psychosocial predictors for cardiac rehabilitation participation for patients with coronary artery disease.

AIMS: Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is a class Ia recommendation by international guidelines. However, the participation remains disappointingly low. Multiple barriers were already identified. Nevertheless, the relationship with psychosocial factors remains unsettled. The aim of this study is to analyse the role of psychosocial factors in CR participation. METHODS AND RESULTS: A prospective study on 165 patients with a percutaneous coronary intervention. The main outcome was participation in a centre-based CR programme. The independent relationship between participation and optimism, type D per

A psychiatric study of patients with diseases of the small intestine.

A group of 80 patients with diseases of the small intestine were given a standardized psychiatric assessment every time they attended the outpatients' department over a period of a year. Forty-six patients with idiopathic steatorrhoea, 23 patients with Crohn's disease, and 11 patients with alactasia were interviewed on 158 occasions. During this time 27 of them (34%) were found to be psychiatrically ill, their illnesses being minor affective disorders. Psychiatric illness was not related either to generalized malabsorption or to deficiencies of specific substances such as folic acid. Although

Psychopathology, Dissociation and Somatic Symptoms in Adolescents Who Were Exposed to Traumatic Experiences.

Background: The direct and long-term effects of children's exposure to traumatic events can be seen in a complex continuum, based first of all on the type of trauma. Children's reactions to trauma may have different manifestations from the clinical picture of the PTSD, exhibiting dissociative, somatic, depressive or anxiety symptoms, and/or disruptiveness. Aim: we conducted a cross-sectional study in a psychiatric patients sample to determine the extent to which complex trauma history is associated with disease-related characteristics (diagnosis, dissociative symptoms, somatic symptomatology,

The Axis II group: treating severely characterologically disturbed patients.

Treating the chronically mentally ill involves not only working with patients suffering from schizophrenia and other prolonged or recurrent psychotic illnesses, it also means providing treatment for patients with severe personality disorders. Many of these patients are also active substance abusers. This article examines the therapeutic and management issues raised for outpatient clinicians who work with these patients. Consideration is devoted to the special problems in treating the dual diagnosis patient, issues of patient and therapist safety, limit setting, splitting dynamics, and countert

Sense of coherence as a personality predictor of the quality of life in men and women after myocardial infarction.

BACKGROUND: The vast majority of research on the quality of life (QoL) after myocardial infarction (MI) concentrates on such factors as: the type and course of MI, methods and stage of treatment or the patient's occupational and family status. Drawing from general psychological knowledge we may assume that some individual factor, especially personality, is also a significant contributor. The present study focused on a specific personality dimension: sense of coherence (SOC). It is defined as a global life orientation to perceive life as comprehensible (rational, predictable and structured), ma
