BACKGROUND: Pediatric urinary incontinence secondary to anatomical anomalies of the bladder outlet is relatively rare, and there is no consensus on its surgical treatment. We reviewed the clinical courses and surgical management of children with this pathology.
METHODS: From 1991 to 2001, we performed bladder neck reconstruction on seven children (three boys and four girls). The mean age at the first intervention was 7 years (range 5-12 years). A 63-year-old man was admitted to our hospital complaining of painful urination. Urinalysis demonstrated pyuria and microscopic hematuria. Cystoscopy revealed the bladder tumor and the reddish mucosa. Nested variants of transitional cell carcinomas (TCC-NVs) are relatively rare neoplasms in the urinary bladder, but at least 25 cases have been described. Gross hematuria and urinary frequency caused a 71-year-old man to visit our hospital. A non-papillary tumor was identified on the posterior wall of the urinary bladder and the pathological diagnosis was signet ring cell carcinoma. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, computed tomographic scanning, barium enema revealed no involvement of other organs. Radical cystectomy and creation of an ileal conduit were performed. OBJECTIVES: To analyse the clinicopathological features of bladder cancer associated with upper urinary tract cancer (UUTC).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Among 106 patients with primary UUTC (mean age 65 years, range 45-82) who underwent surgical treatment, 44 also had bladder cancer. The patients were divided into three groups according to the timing of the appearance of bladder cancer. In group 1, 10 patients had UUTC preceding bladder cancer, group 2 comprised 14 patients with concurrent bladder cancer and group 3, 20 with subsequent bladder cancer; their clinicopathological data were analysed.

Four cases of radiation cystitis that caused diagnostic difficulty because of an epithelial proliferation with architectural complexity and reactive cytologic atypia are described. Three neoplasms measuring 0.5, 1, and 1.5 cm, respectively, were observed by cystoscopy and removed by transurethral resection (TUR). PURPOSE: Benign prostatic hyperplasia, resulting in bladder outflow obstruction, induces well recognized clinical symptoms and morphologic bladder changes.
