PURPOSE: The authors present here 5 cases of continent urinary diversion in rhabdomyosarcoma applying a recently described technique for the Mitrofanoff Principle devised by the authors.
METHODS: Two previously irradiated rhabdomyosarcoma patients presenting with residual bladder disease and massive sensitive urinary urgency underwent a transverse colonic reservoir with catheterizable stoma. Two other patients presenting with a Bricker conduit underwent conversion into an ileal reservoir. One patient underwent reconstruction after a cystectomy.

Two children who had undergone a transappendicular urinary diversion (type Mitrofanoff) developed bladder rupture, one following abdominal trauma, 4 months after the operation and the other following traumatic self-catheterization at 4 years. We studied retrospectively 75 patients who performed clean intermittent self-catheterization for a mean of 7 years (maximum 12 years). Most of the patients had neuropathic bladder dysfunction and 92% were continent. Chronic or recurrent urinary tract infections were present in 42% of the patients. PURPOSE: We assessed the impact of posterior urethral obstruction after primary bladder exstrophy closure.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A review of the records of patients with classic bladder exstrophy at our institution identified 29 boys and 12 girls with a mean age of 11.75 years who had had posterior urethral outlet obstruction after closure was done in the neonatal period.
