Prevalence and Contributing Factors of Anxiety and Depression in Patients with Vestibular Migraine.

Objective: Anxiety and depression are psychiatric comorbidities potentially associated with dizziness and migraine, which can influence disease state, prognosis, and clinical outcomes. Vestibular migraine (VM) is a disease that causes repeated vestibular symptoms in people with a history of migraines. We investigated the prevalence and contributing factors of anxiety and depression in patients with VM. Methods: A total of 74 patients with VM were enrolled in this study. All patients underwent pure-tone audiometry, the examination of spontaneous nystagmus, Dix-Hallpike maneuver or supine-roll t

Effects of modafinil on vestibular function during 24 hour sleep deprivation.

The aim of this research was to investigate the effects of modafinil, a new wake-promoting agent, on vestibular function during 24 h sleep deprivation (SD) so as to provide experimental evidence for the rational use of this drug among air crew. Eight young, healthy male volunteers were exposed to two 24 h periods of continuous wakefulness during the crossover experiment. Initially, 200 mg dose of modafinil was given, and one week later, a matching placebo was administered. The SD time started from 08:00 of the first day to 08:00 of the second day. Drugs were given at 0:00 on the second day. Ve

Effects of conventional versus multimodal vestibular rehabilitation on functional capacity and balance control in older people with chronic dizziness from vestibular disorders: design of a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: There are several protocols designed to treat vestibular disorders that focus on habituation, substitution, adaptation, and compensation exercises. However, protocols that contemplate not only vestibular stimulation but also other components that are essential to the body balance control in older people are rare. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of two vestibular rehabilitation protocols (conventional versus multimodal) on the functional capacity and body balance control of older people with chronic dizziness due to vestibular disorders. METHODS/DESIGN: A randomized, s

Inner Ear Pathologies After Cochlear Implantation in Guinea Pigs: Functional, Histopathological, and Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress-Mediated Apoptosis.

OBJECTIVES: Vestibular dysfunction is one of the most common complications of cochlear implantation (CI); however, the pathological changes and mechanisms underlying inner ear damage post-CI remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the functional and histopathological changes in the cochlea and vestibule as well as endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-mediated apoptosis in guinea pigs after CI. DESIGN: Auditory brainstem response, ice water test, and vestibular evoked myogenic potentials were used to assess cochlear and vestibular function in guinea pigs before and after CI. His

Normative Data for a Multi-Domain Concussion Assessment in the Female Community Sport of Ladies Gaelic Football.

Due to the highly individualised presentation of sport-related concussion (SRC), multi-domain assessments examining cognitive, migraine, vestibular, ocular, mood, sleep, and neck-related function have been suggested to assist clinicians with diagnosis, management, and rehabilitation. Normative data on such assessments for female, community players from countries outside the U.S. are needed. This study aimed to (i) describe normative data from community-level Ladies Gaelic Football players using a multi-domain assessment, and (ii) compare findings between adolescent and adult players. A total o

Comparisons among vestibular examinations and symptoms of vertigo in sudden sensorineural hearing loss patients.

OBJECTIVES: Vertigo in sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is hypothesized as an extension of the disease caused by the anatomical proximity of the cochlea and vestibule. The present study aimed to demonstrate the association of vestibular function test (VFT) results with SSNHL disease severity and prognosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study assessed clinical records of 263 SSNHL patients admitted to our hospital, between January 2010 and October 2017. Steroid treatment comprised high-dose intravenous dexamethasone (16 mg/d) or oral methylprednisolone (64 mg/d) for 4 days and tapered o

Quantitative Ocular Motor / Vestibular Assessment in Patients with Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 3 (SCA3, Machado Joseph Disease) - Systematic Review of the Literature.

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3 or Machado-Joseph disease) is the second most common autosomal-dominant hereditary ataxia and often presents with ocular motor and vestibular impairment. The value of ocular motor testing for early disease detection, monitoring disease progression and as a potential treatment biomarker has been acknowledged in several studies. This systematic review aims to summarise the current evidence supporting quantitative eye movement testing in SCA3. Studies reporting on quantitative ocular motor and/or vestibular measurements in SCA3 were searched for in MEDLINE and

Vestibular Function Correlates with Radiologic Findings in a Gymnast with 22q11.2DS.

BACKGROUND The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) is the most common identified microdeletion in humans. Anomalies of the vestibular system can occur with great frequency and are reported in the radiology literature. Fewer reports exist regarding vestibular function or its clinical features. CASE REPORT We present a case report of a competitive gymnast with 22q11.2DS who was noted to be having specific issues related to balance under conditions of competition, specifically on the balance beam. Comprehensive balance assessment provided evidence of the absence of lateral semicircular canal fu

Evidence for cognitive vestibular integration impairment in idiopathic scoliosis patients.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is characterized by a three-dimensional deviation of the vertebral column and its etiopathogenesis is unknown. Various factors cause idiopathic scoliosis, and among these a prominent role has been attributed to the vestibular system. While the deficits in sensorimotor transformations have been documented in idiopathic scoliosis patients, little attention has been devoted to their capacity to integrate vestibular information for cognitive processing for space perception. Seated idiopathic scoliosis patients and control subjects experienced rotations o

Seasickness pathogenesis and the otolithic organs: vestibular evoked myogenic potentials study--preliminary results.

BACKGROUND: Seasickness is thought to result from conflicting inputs from the vestibular, visual and somatosensory systems. The otolithic organs, which are responsible for the sensation of linear acceleration and tilt, are important in the pathogenesis of seasickness. The vestibular evoked myogenic potentials test is an objective evaluation of saccular function. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether saccular function is related to the pathogenesis of seasickness. METHODS: VEMP was performed in 10 subjects susceptible to seasickness and in 14 non-susceptible subjects. RESULTS: Bilateral VEMP respons

Differentiation of Ménière's disease and migraine-associated dizziness: a review.

A significant body of literature exists demonstrating a relationship between migraine disorders and dizziness. In the characterizations of the migraine-associated dizziness, the signs and symptoms show overlap with those characterizing Meniere's disease. There has been literature, beginning with Ménière himself, suggesting a relationship between Ménière's disease and migraine-associated dizziness. This implicates a possible underlying link in pathogenesis. This review article presents a discussion of the overlap in signs and symptoms between the two disorders. Suggestions for differentiating b

Clinical testing of the statolith system in patients with Menière's disease.

The statolith ocular reflex induced by whole body roll was assessed in 10 patients with Meniere's disease who had undergone a standard vestibular test battery. Normal eye torsion was noted in 4 patients despite the presence of severe symptoms, and a caloric hyporeflexia in one patient. Eye torsion was diminished in one direction of body roll in 4 patients and in both directions of body roll in 2 patients. An abnormal asymmetry of eye torsion (> 16%) was found in the case of body roll towards the normal ear irrespective of whether a caloric asymmetry was found. An abnormal asymmetry of the stat

[The vestibular system: from structure to function].

The two vestibular receptors, right and left, hidden in the petrous part of the temporal bone with the cochlear receptors, receive information from angular and linear movements of the head and transform them into a nerve message sent to the nuclei of the brainstem, which are connected directly on the one hand to the oculomotor nuclei, at the origin of the oculovestibular reflex (induction of nystagmus), and on the other hand, to the spinal motor neurons, at the origin of the vestibulospinal reflex. These reflexes are associated with responses to visual and somaesthetic information for maintena

Effect of positioning of the feet in posturography.

Static posturography has been developed from a basic research test to a widely used clinical tool for evaluating dizzy patients. Before any actual standardization can be achieved, however, several aspects of the test situations have to be evaluated, including the position of the feet. The quantitative significance of the standing position in posturographic measurements was evaluated with healthy volunteers studied under visual and nonvisual conditions, using 4 foot positions: heels together with the toes 30 degrees apart or at an angle of the volunteer's own choice, and the feet parallel and e

Differential diagnosis of vertigo--combined galvanic test and MRI.

Differential diagnosis of the disease entities of vertigo are important in clinical investigations. Many concepts and procedures have been proposed for available diagnostic tests. Recent basic and clinical studies proved the efficacy and reliability of galvanic tests, including galvanic nystagmus test (GNT) and galvanic body sway test (GBST), emphasizing that the effects of galvanization are: 1) on the action potential in vestibular nerve and 2) on the resting discharge of the vestibular nerve. These suggest further that galvanic nystagmus reaction (GNT) is mainly a manifested reaction of the
