Measuring fear change within exposures: Functionally-defined habituation predicts outcome in three randomized controlled trials for pediatric OCD.

OBJECTIVE: This study measured a variety of within-exposure fear changes and tested the relationship of each with treatment outcomes in exposure therapy. METHOD: We coded 459 videotaped exposure tasks from 111 participants in 3 clinical trials for pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD; POTS trials). Within exposures, fear level was observed continuously and alongside exposure process. Fear change metrics of interest were selected for relevance to mechanistic theory. Fear decreases were classified by function; nonhabituation decreases were associated with observed nonlearning processes

Validation and reliability of the Spanish version of the Function in Sitting Test (S-FIST) to assess sitting balance in subacute post-stroke adult patients.

BACKGROUND: Function in Sitting Test (FIST) is a clinical functional assessment of sitting balance validated in adults with stroke. For a major use of this, the test is recommended to be translated in Spanish-speaking countries. OBJECTIVES: Translate to Spanish the FIST and determine its intra-rater and inter-rater reliabilities and concurrent validity as a measure of sitting balance in adult individuals with stroke. METHODS: The original version was translated into Spanish and was agreed by a team of experts. A back-translation into English was subsequently performed and sent to the origina

Gesture impairments in schizophrenia are linked to increased movement and prolonged motor planning and execution.

Schizophrenia patients present with a variety of impaired nonverbal communication skills. Performance of hand gestures is frequently impaired and associated with ratings of motor abnormalities. However, the impact of motor abnormalities to gesture performance remains unclear. To test the association between quantitative measures of motor behavior and qualitative ratings of gesture performance, we quantified movement parameters semi-automatically in videotaped recordings of gesture assessment. Thirty-one patients with schizophrenia (77.4%), schizophreniform (19.4%) or schizoaffective disorder (

Prenatal cocaine dampened behavioral responses to methylphenidate in male and female adolescent rats.

Clinical and animal data point toward deficits in attention and arousal after prenatal cocaine exposure. Since methylphenidate (MPD) is widely used to treat attention disorders, we wanted to determine whether prenatal cocaine (PC) exposure affects the behavioral response to MPD in young rats of both sexes. Pregnant dams received 60 mg/kg of cocaine or vehicle from gestational days 8-22 by intragastric intubations. After delivery, litters were culled to 10 (5 males, 5 females) and fostered. On a single day between PND 41-44 locomotion was recorded in a Plexiglas box within an Accuscan activity

The effects of a rider's mass on ground reaction forces and fetlock kinematics at the trot.

Ground reaction force (GRF) measurements are often normalised to body mass to facilitate inter-individual comparisons. The objective of this study was to explore the effect of a rider on the GRFs and fetlock joint kinematics of trotting horses. The subjects were 5 dressage-trained horses and 3 experienced dressage riders. Ground reaction force measurements and sagittal view videotapes were recorded as the horses trotted at the same velocity in hand (3.49 +/- 0.52 m/s) and with a rider (3.49 +/- 0.46 m/s). Data were time-normalised to stance duration. Ground reaction force measurements were exp

[A new noninvasive method for calculating pulmonary to systemic flow ratio (Qp/Qs) in patients with atrial septal defect using multigated Doppler echocardiography].

The number of patients with atrial septal defect (ASD) who undergo intracardiac repair without cardiac catheterization has been increasing. A noninvasive quantitative method to estimate the Qp/Qs ratio in this disease is therefore needed, but no simple, accurate method has yet been reported. The purpose of this study was to devise a new clinically useful method. Study materials consisted of 15 patients with ASD who were catheterized and five post-operative patients. For this study a multigated Doppler echocardiographic instrument (Fujitsu ME 120A) was used, which allowed us to ascertain Dopple

Effect of morphine on breathing and behavior in fetal sheep.

To define the dose response of apnea and breathing to morphine we studied 12 fetuses at 116-141 days of gestation using our window technique. We instrumented the fetus to record electrocortical activity (ECoG), eye movements (EOG), diaphragmatic activity (integral of EMGdi), heart rate, carotid blood pressure, and amniotic pressure. Saline and morphine in doses of 0.03, 0.1, 0.5, 1, and 3 mg/kg were injected in random order in the jugular vein of the fetus during low-voltage ECoG. Fetuses were videotaped for evaluation of fetal behavior. We found 1) that saline did not elicit a response; 2) ap

Respiratory movements of the vocal cords.

We examined the movements of the vocal cords during tidal breathing, panting, and large changes in lung volume in 12 normal subjects. The glottis was observed with a fiber-optic bronchoscope, and the glottic image was recorded together with flow, volume, and a time marker onto videotape. Phasic respiratory swings in glottic width (dg) and glottic area (Ag) were reproducible in all subjects but differed substantially between subjects. In the group as a whole dg and Ag increased during inspiration to 10.1 +/- 5.6 mm and 126 +/- 8 mm2 (mean +/- SE), respectively, whereas during expiration the low

Feasibility of differentiating gait in Parkinson's disease and spinocerebellar degeneration using a pose estimation algorithm in two-dimensional video.

BACKGROUND: Although pose estimation algorithms have been used to analyze videos of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) to assess symptoms, their feasibility for differentiating PD from other neurological disorders that cause gait disturbances has not been evaluated yet. We aimed to determine whether it was possible to differentiate between PD and spinocerebellar degeneration (SCD) by analyzing video recordings of patient gait using a pose estimation algorithm. METHODS: We videotaped 82 patients with PD and 61 patients with SCD performing the timed up-and-go test. A pose estimation algorit

Rest tremor correlates with reduced contralateral striatal dopamine transporter binding in Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: In vivo dopamine transporter imaging is a useful tool for distinguishing nigrostriatal pathologies (e.g. Parkinson's disease) from other causes of tremor. However, while many of the motoric features of Parkinson's disease (e.g. bradykinesia, rigidity, hypomimia) correlate well with reduced striatal dopamine transporter binding, the same relationship has not been demonstrated for tremor. We investigated the relationship between striatal dopamine transporter binding and quantitative measures of tremor. METHODS: 23 participants with Parkinson's disease underwent standardised clinic

An endoscopic overview of the anterior vitreous base in retinal detachment and anterior proliferative vitreoretinopathy.

PURPOSE: Anterior proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) is an important cause of persistent or recurrent retinal detachment (RD). Endoscopy provides 360° panoramic viewing of the vitreous cavity and high-magnification viewing of the anterior vitreous base (AVB). This study describes the 'in vivo' anatomy and pathoanatomy of the AVB using an ocular endoscope in RD and anterior PVR. METHODS: An intraoperative analysis of over 2000 consecutive eyes undergoing vitrectomy for RD operated with endoscopy-assisted vitrectomy was performed. It was recorded in notes dictated during surgery and in stand
