Colonoscopy remains the most commonly used colorectal cancer screening test in the United States. A substantial portion of the screening population value the high sensitivity of colonoscopy for precancerous colorectal lesions of all sizes, which allows it to be performed at 10 year intervals in average-risk persons with negative examinations. Emerging evidence supports the eventual endorsement of 15 year intervals for patients with normal examinations. Considerable evidence supports an impact of colonoscopy on colorectal cancer incidence and mortality, including a randomized controlled trial o

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) remains a concern for many preterm infants. Early detection and timely treatment have been shown to be effective in improving visual outcomes; moreover, it is crucial that a series of indirect ophthalmic examinations be performed until an infant is considered no longer at risk for the disease. The purpose of this systematic review is to summarize and evaluate the published evidence regarding characteristics and effectiveness of pain management interventions during the ROP examination. Implications for practice are discussed and suggestions for further research

COVID-19 has altered the epidemiology and clinical course of viral keratitis, with increasing evidence of herpesvirus reactivation after infection or vaccination. HSV keratitis remains most common in younger-to-middle-aged men, while HZO predominates in older adults and around one-fourth of HZO patients report current or prior COVID-19. HSV cases frequently recur and complications such as corneal opacity and neuropathic pain can cause vision outcomes ranging from normal to severe loss. Large recent studies suggest vaccination is associated with higher risk of new-onset and relapsing herpesvira

Although partner violence is a common source of injury for women, physicians and female patients rarely discuss this problem. We outline a systematic approach to clinical practice that includes screening, case finding, intervention, and changes in the office environment. The clinician can begin to address partner violence by artfully applying these techniques. Future health outcomes research will provide additional guidance to clinical practice. We conclude with a quote from a third year medical student at the Medical College of Wisconsin who has a clear and challenging vision of the future: "

Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnosis, and Treatment (EPSDT) is a Medicaid program designed to provide comprehensive well child care for children from low-income families. Each EPSDT checkup should include a physical examination; medical history; assessment of development, nutrition, and immunizations; assessment of hearing, vision, and dental status; and anticipatory guidance. This pilot study of the medical records of 76 children receiving EPSDT checkups in six rural counties in North Carolina provided a preliminary assessment of whether EPSDT checkups included the required components. Early detection of visual loss caused by tumours of the base of the skull is accomplished by systematic tests of the pregeniculate optic pathway. Even when central acuity is relatively preserved, a relative afferent pupillary defect and reduced color perception yield evidence of impaired optic nerve conduction. Although confrontation tests of the visual fields are useful screening techniques, unexplained symptoms should be pursued with static and kinetic perimetry. Patterns of optic nerve and chiasmal field loss and atrophy of the dis or retinal nerve fibers are imprecise guides to the locatio

Between 3-47% of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have extraintestinal manifestations (EIMs), and between 1.3-86.9% of patients with IBD suffer from ocular EIMs (O-EIMs) making the eye the third most common organ affected. These O-EIMs exist among a spectrum, with a variety of types and amounts of inflammation which can lead to decreased vision, and in some cases, vision loss, without treatment. We performed a literature review concerning O-EIMs in patients who had or were later found to have a diagnosis of IBD in order to identify ocular EIMs that commonly occur with IBD and to

INTRODUCTION: Posterior capsular opacification (PCO) is the most common complication of cataract surgery. In this study, we develop a model to quantitatively predict the probability of Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy for vision-threatening PCO to improve the life quality of postoperative patients.
METHODS: A registry analysis of cataract procedures performed between the years 2010 and 2021. Following the screening of 16,802 patients (25,883 eyes), 9768 patients (eyes) were enrolled. The cohort was randomly divided into two groups: training (n = 6838) and validation (n = 2930). To identify relevant r

Microvascular occlusions caused by sickle cell disease (SCD) can affect all ocular and orbital structures. Sickle cell retinopathy (SCR) is the most common ophthalmic manifestation of SCD. Fortunately, most individuals with SCR are visually asymptomatic. Vision loss in SCD most commonly occurs as a consequence of proliferative sickle cell retinopathy (PSR), in which pathologic retinal neovascularization occurs. To prevent significant vision loss and blindness, which can occur from complications of PSR, regular retinopathy surveillance screening examinations and consistent follow-up with a reti

BACKGROUND: Epiretinal membranes (ERMs), secondary to retinal cell proliferation on the retinal surface, usually affect patients over 50 years of age but occur rarely in children. Here we report the case of a 4-year-old patient with a unilateral sub-inner limiting membrane (sub-ILM) membrane mimicking epiretinal membrane with notable ultrastructural features indicating its possible origin from old sub-ILM hemorrhage.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 4-year-old boy was admitted with the complaint of poor vision in his right eye, which had been detected at school vision screening performed 6 months earlier…

IMPORTANCE: Diabetic macular edema (DME) is a leading cause of vision loss in persons with diabetes mellitus. Although there are national estimates for the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy and its risk factors among persons with diabetes, to our knowledge, no comparable estimates are available for DME specifically.
OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of DME in the US population and to identify associated risk factors.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A cross-sectional analysis of 1038 participants aged 40 years or older with diabetes and valid fundus photographs in the 2005 to 2008 Na

The encouraging scenario of international efforts to eliminate preventable and avoidable blindness is the legacy of public health ophthalmology in the 20th century. With active programs currently in place or beginning for the major cause of blindness in childhood and two of the leading infectious causes of blindness, it is natural that research in eye disease will shift even more heavily toward the leading causes of blindness in the older ages. The age-related eye diseases will rapidly become the most common causes of blindness and visual loss and, with the exception of cataract, are the more

Children with strabismus (crossed eyes" or "squint) may have functional issues with reading and other academic activities, possibly resulting in reduction of overall academic achievement. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate the prevalence of strabismus and its role with total of 995 students randomly divided between rural and urban area during camp with their relative histories, screen time, outdoor activity, reading time and ocular examination. We found difference for all the variables with no statistical significance. Hence, it is essential to monitor these children closely and interven
