[Practical significance of critical fusion frequency (CFF). Chronological resolution of the visual system in differential diagnosis].

The value of measuring the critical fusion frequency (CFF) as part of ophthalmological diagnostics is examined. The relevant literature on changes of the CFF concomitant with refraction errors, media opacity, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and various other opticopathies is discussed regarding the relevance of CFF for the differential diagnosis. Various methods and instruments for measuring the CFF are presented. The CFF is a complex function of the visual system and changes in CFF cannot be ascribed to a specific level of signal transduction. However, measurement of the CFF is a v

[Visual problems in cerebral stroke].

BACKGROUND: It is estimated that every year 13,000 persons in Norway have a cerebral stroke. Visual problems after cerebral stroke are frequent but visual rehabilitation is rarely performed. We wanted to estimate the frequency of a visual field defect being detected in patients with cerebral stroke during their stay in a medical department. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty consecutive patients referred to the hospital with cerebral stroke had their visual field examined in the department of medicine with Donders' method. Eighteen of the patients could cooperate in an examination by eye clinic per

Associations of ambient illumination with mood: contribution of ophthalmic dysfunctions.

Evidence suggests that ocular pathology could reduce light-stimulated neuronal signaling to the suprachiasmatic nuclei. This study investigated associations of ambient illumination with moods, while considering the contribution of ophthalmic dysfunctions. Seventy Black (59%) and White (41%) Americans participated in the study. Their average age was 68.27+/-5.97 years; 73% were women. Baseline data included: physical health, mood, and sociodemographics. Ophthalmic factors including visual acuity, visual field defects, intraocular pressure, vertical and horizontal cup-to-disk ratios, and nerve-f

Associations of human crystalline lens retrodots and waterclefts with visual impairment: an observational study.

PURPOSE: To investigate the relationships between visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and 11 clinicopathologic classes of opacity in the human crystalline lens. METHODS: The Somerset and Avon Eye Study is an observational population study of age-related sight-threatening eye disease, based in Bristol, UK. After excluding eyes with other visually relevant disease, data from 902 individuals aged 55 years or older were analyzed. The associations of lens features (posterior subcapsular cataract, nuclear color, nuclear white scatter, cortical spokes, anterior subcapsular cataract, vacuoles, water

Spatial localization in esotropia: does extraretinal eye position information change?

PURPOSE: To investigate the accuracy of spatial localization in children with a specific type of convergent strabismus, fully accommodative esotropia. METHODS: Two groups of children, with right and left fully accommodative esotropia, respectively, pointed at targets located centrally and eccentrically on a computer touchscreen without being able to see their hands. The size and the direction of the horizontal pointing responses were recorded under two conditions: when their eyes were aligned (wearing spectacles) and when they were squinting (not wearing spectacles). A group of children witho

[Posterior scleritis: apropos of 6 cases].

In a retrospective study of 6 patients (9 eyes) with posterior scleritis, we analyse the symptoms, the clinical signs and the ancillary tests of the disease. A decreased vision and an ocular or periocular pain are found in 8 cases of 9. Anterior involvement like redness is found in all the cases. In 7 eyes, we observe a diffuse or localized exudative retinal detachment. B-scan ultrasonography is the most helpful ancillary test, showing in all the examined eyes a scleral thickening. In 2 patients, we find a systemic disease associated with the posterior scleritis.

Subchronic dosing of macaques with 2,5-hexanedione causes long-lasting motor dysfunction but reversible visual loss.

Visual sensitivity and neurological status were monitored in four female macaque monkeys dosed orally with 2.5-hexanedione (0.64 mM/kg, 5 days per week) for 15 or 17 weeks. The first sign of toxicity was intention tremor seen after 3 months of dosing. This was followed, a week later, by a moderate decrease in visual contrast sensitivity, which returned to baseline 6 to 11 weeks after the end of dosing. Acuity and flicker resolution were not disrupted. A progressive general weakness ensued for 5 to 7 weeks after dosing had ended. Some slow recovery was seen, although the animals remained severe

Clinical applications of preferential looking measures of visual acuity.

We have undertaken 3 lines of research aimed at the eventual transformation of the laboratory-based preferential looking (PL) acuity-testing procedures into clinically-useful techniques. (1) The first line of research involves studies of the parameters of PL testing, and the establishing of norms for various groups. The results show that acuity development is closely tied to gestational age, that infants' acuity is reduced at low luminances but does not vary significantly at levels above 1 log cd/m2, and that monocular acuity is poorer than previously-published binocular acuity norms. (2) The

Ethambutol and visual assessment in England: current practice and recommendations.

BACKGROUND: Standard treatment for tuberculosis (TB) in children and adults includes an initial two-month course of ethambutol, a drug that in rare cases can cause optic neuropathy and irreversible vision loss. There is a lack of clear guidance on what vision assessments are needed before and during treatment with ethambutol, with the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, British National Formulary and British Thoracic Society offering different guidance. We aimed to assess how vision is routinely tested in patients treated with ethambutol in TB

The neuro-ophthalmology of head trauma.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Concussion, a form of mild TBI, might be associated with long-term neurological symptoms. The effects of TBI and concussion are not restricted to cognition and balance. TBI can also affect multiple aspects of vision; mild TBI frequently leads to disruptions in visual functioning, while moderate or severe TBI often causes structural lesions. In patients with mild TBI, there might be abnormalities in saccades, pursuit, convergence, accommodation, and vestibulo-ocular reflex. Moderate and severe TBI might additionally lead

Vision does not always help stroke survivors compensate for impaired limb position sense.

BACKGROUND: Position sense is commonly impaired after stroke. Traditional rehabilitation methods instruct patients to visualize their limbs to compensate for impaired position sense. OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to evaluate how the use of vision influences impaired position sense. METHODS: We examined 177 stroke survivors, an average of 12.7 days (+/- 10 days (SD)) post-stroke, and 133 neurologically-intact controls with a robotic assessment of position sense. The robot positioned one limb (affected) and subjects attempted to mirror-match the position using the opposite limb (unaffected). Subject

Meridian-Specific and Post-Optical Deficits of Spatial Vision in Human Astigmatism: Evidences From Psycho-Physical and EEG Scalings.

Previous studies have demonstrated that orientation-specific deprivation in early life can lead to neural deficits of spatial vision in certain space, and can even result in meridional amblyopia (MA). Individuals with astigmatism are the optimal and natural models for exploring this asymmetric development of spatial vision in the human visual system. This study aims to assess the contrast sensitivity function (CSF) and EEG signals along two principal meridians in participants with regular astigmatism when being optimal optical corrected. Twelve participants with astigmatism (AST group, 20 eyes

Bitemporal peripapillary hemorrhages: Toxic-ischemic optic neuropathy caused by ethanol and cocaine abuse.

A 36-year-old man presented complaining of bilateral painless vision loss. He was admitted with chronic ethanol abuse, as well as sporadic cocaine consumption three days before symptom onset. General medical evaluation dismissed cerebral and cardiovascular events. Blood tests revealed folic acid deficiency. Visual acuity (VA) was count fingers in both eyes (OU). Fundoscopic findings included remarkable bitemporal peripapillary hemorrhages. A diagnosis of toxic-ischemic optic neuropathy was made. The hemorrhages resolved after three weeks, with VA recovering to 20/20 OU. The sequelae included b

A rare case of temporal arteritis with rheumatoid arthritis and interstitial lung disease mimicking pulpo-periodontal pathology.

A 75-year-old male patient was planned for dental treatment due to pain of suspected pulpo-periodontal origin in relation to right maxillary first molar. Careful evaluation revealed the pain to be non-odontogenic in nature and led to the diagnosis of temporal arteritis with rheumatoid arthritis along with interstitial lung disease (ILD). Characteristic findings of temporal arteritis include headache, jaw claudication, visual loss, and constitutional symptoms (malaise, fever, weight loss, loss of appetite). Temporal artery biopsy (TAB) remains the gold standard for diagnosis. Additional diagnos

Family resemblance: ten family members with prosopagnosia and within-class object agnosia.

We report on neuropsychological testing done with a family in which many members reported severe face recognition impairments. These 10 individuals were high functioning in everyday life and performed normally on tests of low-level vision and high-level cognition. In contrast, they showed clear deficits with tests requiring face memory and judgements of facial similarity. They did not show deficits with all aspects of higher level visual processing as all tested performed normally on a challenging facial emotion recognition task and on a global-local letter identification task. On object memor
