Evaluation of two unilateral laryngoplasty techniques and their effect on arytenoid cartilage abduction in cats.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate two unilateral laryngoplasty (arytenoid lateralisation) techniques for use in the surgical management of laryngeal paralysis in cats. METHODS: Left cricoarytenoid abduction (lateralisation) was performed in 20 ex vivo cat larynges; 10 following complete cricoarytenoid disarticulation (group LAA-dis) and 10 following no cricoarytenoid disarticulation (group LAA-nodis). For both groups, left arytenoid abduction (LAA) was measured in the resting and postoperative larynges using image analysis software. Measurements were evaluated using the Mann-W

Assessment of survey radiography as a method of diagnosing bilateral laryngeal paralysis in dogs.

The gold standard for diagnosis of laryngeal paralysis is laryngoscopy under light anesthesia. This prospective analytical cross-sectional study aimed to determine whether a radiographic assessment of the larynx could be used as a non-invasive screening tool for diagnosing laryngeal paralysis in non-sedated animals, as the laryngeal ventricles may appear wider in affected animals. The laryngeal ventricles of 18 dogs with bilateral laryngeal paralysis composing the affected group and 25 non-sedated dogs presenting no respiratory abnormality composing the control group were evaluated using right

Characterization of intrauterine growth, proliferation and biomechanical properties of the murine larynx.

Current research approaches employ traditional tissue engineering strategies to promote vocal fold (VF) tissue regeneration, whereas recent novel advances seek to use principles of developmental biology to guide tissue generation by mimicking native developmental cues, causing tissue or allogenic/autologous progenitor cells to undergo the regeneration process. To address the paucity of data to direct VF differentiation and subsequent new tissue formation, we characterize structure-proliferation relationships and tissue elastic moduli over embryonic development using a murine model. Growth, cel

Retrospective study investigating causes of abnormal respiratory noise in horses following prosthetic laryngoplasty.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING THE STUDY: To investigate causes of respiratory noises in horses following prosthetic laryngoplasty (with or without a ventriculocordectomy) and to examine potential associations between degree of arytenoid abduction and the presence of other upper respiratory tract (URT) abnormalities, including right-sided collapse. METHODS: Clinical records and dynamic videoendoscopic recordings were examined from horses presented between 1995 and 2010 for investigation of respiratory noise during exercise, following a prosthetic laryngoplasty (+/- a ventriculocordectomy). Relationsh

High-frequency viscoelastic shear properties of vocal fold tissues: implications for vocal fold tissue engineering.

The biomechanical function of the vocal folds (VFs) depends on their viscoelastic properties. Many conditions can lead to VF scarring that compromises voice function and quality. To identify candidate replacement materials, the structure, composition, and mechanical properties of native tissues need to be understood at phonation frequencies. Previously, the authors developed the torsional wave experiment (TWE), a stress-wave-based experiment to determine the linear viscoelastic shear properties of small, soft samples. Here, the viscoelastic properties of porcine and human VFs were measured ove

Evolving concepts of laryngeal paralysis.

Accepted concepts of the pathophysiology and treatment of laryngeal paralysis have changed over the years. It has long been observed that symptoms of laryngeal paralysis vary greatly, both between patients and over time. There have been various theories to explain these differences. This article reviews how these ideas have changed over time as research has produced new information. Currently, the most popular view is that the laryngeal nerve regenerates after injury, albeit incompletely and inconsistently, and that variations in symptoms and laryngeal posture can be accounted for by muscle ac

Determination of the optimal conditions for laryngeal pacing with the Itrel II implantable stimulator.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the optimal stimulus paradigm, electrode orientation, and configuration of an implantable stimulator used to reanimate the posterior-cricoarytenoid (PCA) muscle in case of bilateral vocal fold paralysis (BVFP). STUDY DESIGN: Acute studies were conducted on 13 canines implanted with Itrel II systems with or without PCA innervation. PCA stimulus-response characteristics were obtained by measuring stimulated vocal fold displacement endoscopically. RESULTS: The denervated PCA was only 10% to 25% as responsive to stimulation as the innervated PCA. However, the response cou

[Laryngeal hemiplegia in warmblood horses--a study of stallions, mares and their offspring].

Laryngoscopic examination during sedation was performed on 24 stallions and on their offspring (240 foals and 474 adult horses). Additionally the dams (n = 308) of 35 foals and 216 horses were examined. With the bilateral comparison of the arytaenoid movements the function of the abductory and adductory laryngeal muscles were evaluated and the left abductory dysfunction (idiopathic laryngeal hemiplegia, ILH) was divided into six degrees. The incidence and degree of ILH depended on age and the occurrence of the same dysfunction in the parents. Foals suffered in significantly lower number (24.7

Peritracheal abscess associated with tracheal collapse and bilateral laryngeal paralysis in a dog.

Tracheal collapse and bilateral laryngeal paralysis were diagnosed in an 8-month-old Cocker Spaniel that had acute onset of dyspnea and cyanosis. Surgical exploration of the mediastinum revealed an abscess involving the ventral wall of the trachea immediately caudal to the thoracic inlet. Both recurrent laryngeal nerves were entrapped in fibrous tissue surrounding the abscess. The dog recovered after tracheal resection and anastomosis and freeing of the entrapped nerves. The peritracheal abscess was suspected to have been the result of esophageal perforation secondary to foreign body penetrati

Transendoscopic neodymium:yttrium aluminum garnet laser irradiation in horses.

A neodymium:yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser was used to study effects of applying laser irradiation transendoscopically to the corniculate process of the arytenoid cartilage in horses. Dosimetry was established initially in vitro in 10 corniculate cartilages that were irradiated and examined histologically to determine penetration depths at selected power settings. Eleven horses were given xylazine IV and butorphoral tartrate IV, and their left ventricle and corniculate process were irradiated. Six horses had left laryngeal hemiplegia and were euthanatized and necropsied 14 weeks after

New microspot micromanipulator for carbon dioxide laser surgery in otolaryngology. Early clinical results.

A new micromanipulator with microspot capability has been developed for carbon dioxide laser surgery in otolaryngology. The instrument features new infrared optics, which provide smaller laser spot sizes than those achievable with conventional micromanipulators (300 micron using a 400-mm operating microscope lens). The conventional red helium-neon aiming laser is replaced with a nonlaser fiberoptic image, and a power defocus control on the joystick manipulator eliminates external defocus controls. Less surrounding tissue trauma occurs with this new instrument by using a higher power density wi

Injectable collagen in laryngeal rehabilitation.

Glottic insufficiency has been successfully managed by Teflon augmentation of paretic vocal cords over the past two decades. Collagen fulfills the criteria for a suitable bioimplant and is an attractive alternative as it is a normal constituent of the extracellular protein matrix. This study explores the use of modified bovine collagen injected into the canine larynx. Clinical situations are simulated by creating lesions and injecting collagen at different sites. The technique permits precise placement and quantification. Histologic study of the collagen implant fails to show evidence of signi

Presence of a home cage running wheel, but not wheel running per se, decreases social motivation in adult C57BL/6J female mice.

Physical activity offers myriad benefits to health and well-being, in humans and other animals as well. In rodents, voluntary wheel running can attenuate the effects of both physical and social stressors on rodent social behavior. Whether wheel running affects rodent social behaviors per se remains less well understood. We conducted the current study to test whether home cage access to running wheels impacts the social behaviors of adult, group-housed C57BL/6J female mice during same-sex interactions with novel females. Group-housed females were either given continuous home cage running wheel

Functional coupling of acoustic and chemical signals in the courtship behaviour of the male Drosophila melanogaster.

During courtship, the male Drosophila melanogaster sends signals to the female through two major sensory channels: chemical and acoustic. These signals are involved in the stimulation of the female to accept copulation. In order to determine the respective importance in the courtship of these signals, their production was controlled using genetical and surgical techniques. Males deprived of the ability to emit both signals are unable to mate, demonstrating that other (e.g. visual or tactile) signals are not sufficient to stimulate the female. If either acoustic or chemical signals are lacking,
