Liver Transplantation for Acute Liver Failure Due to Yellow Phosphorus Poisoning - A Comprehensive Review.

Yellow phosphorus or metal phosphide (YP-MP) rodenticide poisoning has been a known cause of acute liver failure (ALF) in many countries of Asia and North and South America over the last decade. It is a highly toxic compound and is a well-known cause of intentional or accidental poisoning in both adults and children. In lower doses, it causes gastrointestinal symptoms and mild hepatic injury, and patients may spontaneously recover. In higher doses, hepatic necrosis and fatty infiltration may cause significant injury and may even lead to ALF, characterized by hepatic encephalopathy, coagulopath

Rare survival of high-tension electrocution shock in a crossbred Jersey cattle: a complete profile on critical care monitoring.

BACKGROUND: Accidental electrocution was more common in animals and death was mostly due to shock and cardiac arrest. Survival of animals or humans could be possible if victims receive immediate medical support. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 3-year-old crossbred Jersey heifer was presented to the Emergency and Critical Care Medicine Referral Clinic of the Veterinary College and Research Institute, Orathanadu, with a history of accidental electrocution by broken high-tension overhead power transmission line during grazing in the paddy fields. The animal was dull and depressed, dark red, and some areas w

Evidence for Asthma in the Lungs of Mice Inoculated with Different Doses of Toxocara canis.

Toxocara canis, a common roundworm that mainly causes toxocariasis, is a zoonotic parasite found worldwide. Humans, an accidental host, can acquire T. canis infection through accidental ingestion of T. canis-embryonated egg-contaminated food, water, and soil, and by encapsulated larvae in a paratenic host's viscera or meat. Long-term residence of T. canis larvae in a paratenic host's lungs may induce pulmonary inflammation that contributes to lung injury, airway inflammatory hyperresponsiveness, and collagen deposition in mice and clinical patients. This study intended to investigate the relat

[Epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic features of pediatric ocular injuries in an eye emergency unit in Île-de-France].

INTRODUCTION: Ocular and orbital trauma is a leading cause of acquired monocular blindness in childhood. These injuries differ from those in adults in some aspects of the management and prognosis, notably the risk of amblyopia. The goal of this study was to analyze the epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic features of ocular trauma in children who consulted in an eye emergency department in Île-de-France. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a descriptive, prospective and longitudinal study. Over a period of 6 months, we included children aged 15 years old or less, who consulted during calls fo

Examining Fatal Opioid Overdoses in Marion County, Indiana.

Drug-related overdoses are now the leading injury-related death in the USA, and many of these deaths are associated with illicit opioids and prescription opiate pain medication. This study uses multiple sources of data to examine accidental opioid overdoses across 6 years, 2010 through 2015, in Marion County, IN, an urban jurisdiction in the USA. The primary sources of data are toxicology reports from the county coroner, which reveal that during this period, the most commonly detected opioid substance was heroin. During the study period, 918 deaths involved an opiod, and there were significant

Forensic and neuropathological characteristics of lethal acute blunt traumatic spinal cord injury.

Acute traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) is a life-altering yet largely preventable neurological disorder with high morbidity and mortality. Clinical registries typically gather comprehensive trauma data from living patients but often exclude autopsy data from scene-of-injury fatalities, leaving the pathology of acute TSCI underexplored. To address this gap, we reviewed autopsy records from the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner spanning a 15-year period (2003-2018) to characterize the demographic, forensic, and neuropathological features of lethal acute blunt TSCI. Cases were

Unusual case of death by grinder.

Suicides by power tools such as grinders are rare and present significant challenges in forensic investigation. Accurate differentiation between suicidal, homicidal, or accidental injuries is crucial, particularly when the circumstances surrounding the death are ambiguous. We report the case of a 64-year-old man found dead in his workshop. The body was discovered lying near a grinder, with a deep cervical wound. The scene revealed multiple blood droplets scattered across the room, along with two large blood pools located approximately one meter from the body and a stepladder securing the disco…

Successful Management of a Penetrating Cardiac Injury by Date Palm Thorn: A Case Report.

Penetrating cardiac injury in children is a life-threatening emergency. The initial reaction of the witness and medical team management plays a crucial role in survival. We are reporting a five-year-old girl who had a penetrating cardiac injury after an accidental fall on a sharp date tree thorn, witnessed by her parents. They took their child immediately to the hospital without manipulating the thorn. The initial workup included an X-ray, echocardiography, and computed tomography (CT) of the chest, revealing that the thorn transfixed the heart from the anterior chest wall to the posterior med

Safety evaluation of MA-T after ingestion in mice.

MA-T (Matching Transformation System®) is a proprietary chemical mixture for on-demand production of aqueous chlorine dioxide that is used for the treatment of oral malodor. MA-T is also an effective disinfectant against at least 39 pathological microorganisms, including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, and therefore may be useful as a disinfectant mouthwash to prevent the spread of infection. Accidental ingestion is the putative worst hazard scenario associated with mouthwash use; therefore, here we investigated the safety of MA-T ingestion in mice. Mice were provided drinking

Skin and soft tissue infections following marine injuries and exposures in travelers.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) in travelers often follow insect bites and can present a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations ranging from impetigo to necrotizing cellulitis. Significant SSTIs can also follow marine injuries and exposures in travelers, and the etiologies are often marine bacteria. METHODS: To meet the objectives of describing the pathogen-specific presenting clinical manifestations, diagnostic and treatment strategies, and outcomes of superficial and deep invasive infections in travelers caused by commonly encountered and newly emerging mari

Spinal cord injury without radiological abnormality in an infant with delayed presentation of symptoms after a minor injury.

STUDY DESIGN: We present a very rare case of an infant with delayed presentation of spinal cord injury without radiologic abnormality (SCIWORA) after a minor injury. OBJECTIVE: To emphasize the importance of spinal evaluation with MRI in selected cases, even after minor injuries, especially in infants. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: SCIWORA arises mainly in infants and children during accidental trauma or after sport injury. However, it has been very rare for a 6-day-delayed infant SCIWORA after a minor injury. METHODS: An infant presented with transient nausea and vomiting after falling from

Spectrum of unnatural fatalities in the Chandigarh zone of north-west India--a 25 year autopsy study from a tertiary care hospital.

A 25 year (1977-2002) autopsy study of 5933 unnatural fatalities from a tertiary care hospital of north-west India revealed an abrupt rise in unnatural deaths (3050; 51.4%) since 1997. 84.2% subjects were between the age group of 16 and 45. Accidental deaths (79.3%) constituted the majority of unnatural fatalities followed by suicidal (13.9%) and homicidal (6%) deaths. Road traffic accidents (RTAs), burn, poisoning, accidental falls from height and firearm injury were responsible for 94.5% of the total unnatural deaths. A male preponderance (73.4%) was seen in all causes of deaths except for b

Fatal falls from heights in and around Diyarbakir, Turkey.

Falls from high places, such as from a building, are frequently encountered in suicides, in some accidents, and sometimes in homicides. In this study, we evaluated the demographic data, mortality rates, fall causes, and post-mortem findings of individuals who fell from heights. Our cases were collected retrospectively from the files of the Branch of the Council of Forensic Medicine in Diyarbakir between 1996 and 2001. There were 431 accidental and 53 suicidal deaths due to blunt injury resulting from falls. Of the victims, 188 were female and 296 were male. The average age of the 484 victims w

Death by overlaying and wedging: a 15-year retrospective study.

Overlaying, the accidental death by smothering caused by a larger individual sleeping on top of an infant, is a cause of death that has been documented for centuries. The hazard of death has been reported to be greater in infants less than 5 months of age but may occur in children up to the age of 2 years. When an adult or older child rolls on top of an infant, mechanical asphyxia results. The face may be pressed into the mattress or into the body of the sleeping adult or older child. The infant's air may be expressed, and he or she is unable to cry due to pressure on the thorax and the inabil

Successful Treatment of a Nail Gun Injury in Right Parietal Region and Superior Sagittal Sinus.

BACKGROUND INTRODUCTION: Nail injuries are important causes of penetrating craniocerebral injuries. Theirs incidence is very low, but the injuries can be fatal. Since the nail gun was gradually popularized in 1959, the incidence of nail injuries has been increasing. Here we report a case of nail gun injury to superior sagittal sinus and review the literature of the past 60 years to find out what are the possible factors of nail gun injury and what are their respective ratios? CLINICAL REPORT: An 18-year-old male patient was accidentally injured in the head by the worker's nail gun, accompanie

Early diffusion restriction of white matter in infants with small subdural hematomas is associated with delayed atrophy.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of infant morbidity and mortality. In these patients, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) including diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is the test of choice to describe the extent of microstructural injury. CASE PRESENTATION AND DISCUSSION: In this case series, we describe novel acute and chronic MRI findings in four infants (6-19 months) with small, unilateral subdural hematomas in whom the etiology of head injury was suspicious for non-accidental trauma (NAT). Acute (<1-week post-injury) DWI revealed extensive areas of restricted diffusio

A Descriptive Analysis of Patients With Attempted Suicide at a Rural Level I Trauma Center.

OBJECTIVES: For patients with self-harm, suicide attempt, or suicide completion, the trauma bay is often the single point of contact. Regional differences and patterns exist for suicide that should be studied to enhance preventive strategies. Our goal was to critically evaluate the suicidal population of Southeast Georgia over a 9-year period. METHODS: A retrospective review of our trauma database from January 2010 through December 2019 was conducted at a Level I Trauma Center. All ages were included. All patients arriving with attempted suicide or death due to a suicidal complication were in

Impact of socioeconomic distress on mortality in pediatric head injury: A geographic and demographic analysis using the Florida Trauma Registry.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of pediatric death in the United States. The Distressed Community Index (DCI) quantifies socioeconomic distress. We evaluated the association between DCI and mortality after pediatric head injury using a statewide registry. METHODS: Florida trauma registry data (2016-2023) were queried for patients <18 years with ICD-10 S00-S09 diagnoses and known injury zip code. Zip codes were linked to DCI scores and categorized as high distress (>75) or low distress (≤75). Propensity score matching (PSM) reduced confounding, and mortality was com
