Internal Cognitive Load Differentially Influences Acoustic and Lexical Context Effects in Speech Perception: Evidence From a Population With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

BACKGROUND: To overcome variability in spoken language, listeners utilize various types of context information for disambiguating speech sounds. Context effects have been shown to be affected by cognitive load. However, previous results are mixed regarding the influence of cognitive load on the use of context information in speech perception. PURPOSE: We tested a population characterized by an attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to better understand the relationship between attention (or internal cognitive load) and context effects. METHOD: The use of acoustic versus lexical prop

Wideband Acoustic Immittance: Normative Study and Test-Retest Reliability of Tympanometric Measurements in Adults.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to present normative data of tympanometric measurements of wideband acoustic immittance and to characterize wideband tympanograms. METHOD: Data were collected in 84 young adults with strictly defined normal hearing and middle ear status. Energy absorbance (EA) was measured using clicks for 1/12-octave frequencies (0.236 to 8 kHz), with the ear canal air pressure systematically varied (+200 to -300 daPa). In 40 ears, 7 consecutive trials and a trial of clinical 226-Hz acoustic admittance (Ya) tympanometry followed. A cavity test was also conducted. RESUL

A Preliminary Investigation of the Air-Bone Gap: Changes in Intracochlear Sound Pressure With Air- and Bone-conducted Stimuli After Cochlear Implantation.

HYPOTHESIS: A cochlear implant electrode within the cochlea contributes to the air-bone gap (ABG) component of postoperative changes in residual hearing after electrode insertion. BACKGROUND: Preservation of residual hearing after cochlear implantation has gained importance as simultaneous electric-acoustic stimulation allows for improved speech outcomes. Postoperative loss of residual hearing has previously been attributed to sensorineural changes; however, presence of increased postoperative ABG remains unexplained and could result in part from altered cochlear mechanics. Here, we sought to…

Effect of personal music system use on sacculocollic reflex assessed by cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potential: A preliminary investigation.

Listening to music through a portable personal music system (PMS) is a growing trend, especially among the youth. The preferred listening level in such kinds of PMS has been reported to cross the safe levels and its impact on the auditory system was demonstrated in several previous investigations. Owing to the commonality in several aspects between the auditory and the vestibular systems, it appears likely that the deleterious effects of PMS use could also be impinging on the vestibular system, which has never been investigated. The present study therefore, aimed at evaluating the effects of P

Negative needle deflection of the acoustic reflex in otosclerotics.

The preoperative audiometric and electroacoustic impedance test results of 24 surgically confirmed otosclerotics are reviewed with special attention given to the direction of needle deflection during acoustic reflex testing. Information on the direction of needle deflection during acoustic reflex testing was gathered at 5 or 10 dB above reflex threshold. In 12 of the 24 patients acoustic reflexes were present, and in each case the response included negative needle deflections. The presence or absence of the acoustic reflex seemed to be related to the reported duration of the hearing loss.

Frequency and level dependence of the middle ear acoustic reflex and its decay measured in wideband absorbance with contralateral narrowband noise elicitors.

The acoustic reflex has potential as a diagnostic tool for identifying individuals with selective damage to cochlear sensory neurons (Bramhall et al., 2022; Feeney et al., 2023; Wojtczak et al., 2017). If damage to neurons is localized, then using broadband stimuli to elicit the reflex, as reported in the studies cited above, may not be most effective in revealing spatially restricted lesions. We have measured changes in absorbance with chirps delivered to one ear and contralateral narrowband noise to elicit the reflex. We aim to characterize the frequency and level dependence of changes in ab

Generalizability of clinically measured acoustic reflexes to brief sounds.

Middle ear muscle contractions (MEMC) can be elicited in response to high-level sounds, and have been used clinically as acoustic reflexes (ARs) during evaluations of auditory system integrity. The results of clinical AR evaluations do not necessarily generalize to different signal types or durations. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the likelihood of observing MEMC in response to brief sound stimuli (tones, recorded gunshots, noise) in adult participants (N = 190) exhibiting clinical ARs and excellent hearing sensitivity. Results revealed that the presence of clinical ARs was not a s

Earplug-induced changes in acoustic reflex thresholds suggest that increased subcortical neural gain may be necessary but not sufficient for the occurrence of tinnitus.

The occurrence of tinnitus is associated with hearing loss and neuroplastic changes in the brain, but disentangling correlation and causation has remained difficult in both human and animal studies. Here we use earplugs to cause a period of monaural deprivation to induce a temporary, fully reversible tinnitus sensation, to test whether differences in subcortical changes in neural response gain, as reflected through changes in acoustic reflex thresholds (ARTs), could explain the occurrence of tinnitus. Forty-four subjects with normal hearing wore an earplug in one ear for either 4 (n = 27) or 7

Spontaneous otoacoustic emission recordings during contralateral pure-tone activation of medial olivocochlear reflex.

We hypothesized that cochlear frequency discrimination occurs through medial olivocochlear efferent (MOCE)-induced alterations in outer hair cell (OHC) electromotility, which is independent from basilar membrane traveling waves. After obtaining informed consent, volunteers with normal hearing (n = 10; mean age: 20.6 ± 1.2 years) and patients with unilateral deafness (n = 10; mean age: 30.2 ± 17.9 years) or bilateral deafness (n = 8; mean age: 30.7 ± 13.8 years) underwent a complete physical and audiological examination, and audiological tests including transient evoked otoacoustic emission and

Temporal modulation transfer functions measured from auditory-nerve responses following sensorineural hearing loss.

The ability of auditory-nerve (AN) fibers to encode modulation frequencies, as characterized by temporal modulation transfer functions (TMTFs), generally shows a low-pass shape with a cut-off frequency that increases with fiber characteristic frequency (CF). Because AN-fiber bandwidth increases with CF, this result has been interpreted to suggest that peripheral filtering has a significant effect on limiting the encoding of higher modulation frequencies. Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), which is typically associated with broadened tuning, is thus predicted to increase the range of modulation

Human efferent adaptation of DPOAEs in the L1,L2 space.

The adaptive properties of distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) at 2f(1)-f2 were investigated in 12 ears of normally hearing adults aged 18-30 years using long-lasting 1-s primary-tone on-times. In this manner, DPOAE adaptation at a single f2 of 1.55 kHz (f2/f1=1.21) was evaluated as a function of the levels of the primary tones in a matrix of L1, L2 settings, which varied from 45 to 80 dB SPL, in 5-dB steps. DPOAEs were elicited under both monaural and binaural stimulus-presentation conditions. Adaptation was defined as the difference in DPOAE levels between the initial 92-ms bas

Sensitivity to verb phrase grammaticality by children with specific language impairment.

8 preschoolers with specific language impairment (age range=44-58 mo.) and 8 language-matched, typically developing toddlers (22-29 mo.) participated in a verb comprehension task to investigate sensitivity to auxiliary is in four contexts --grammatical (Who is pushing?), omitted (Who pushing?), ungrammatical (Who in pushing?), and nonsense (Who id pushing?). Analysis yielded a significant interaction: children with specific language impairment had the lowest comprehension in the ungrammatical context and typically developing children had the highest. Perhaps children with specific language imp

Suppression and enhancement of distortion-product otoacoustic emissions by interference tones above f(2). I. Basic findings in rabbits.

The present study measured interference-response areas (IRAs) for distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) at 2f(1)-f(2), 3f(1)-2f(2), and 2f(2)-f(1). The IRAs were obtained in either awake or anesthetized rabbits, or in anesthetized guinea pigs and mice, by sweeping the frequencies and levels of an interference tone (IT) around a set of f(1) and f(2) primary tones, at several fixed frequencies and levels, while plotting the effects of the IT on DPOAE level. An unexpected outcome was the occurrence of regions of suppression and/or enhancement of DPOAE level when the IT was at a freque

Contralateral transient evoked otoacoustic emissions following acoustic neuroma surgery.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of acoustic neuroma surgery on the contralateral cochlear function using transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) and to test whether changes in TEOAEs differ according to the type of surgical approach. Forty four patients were included in this study. TEOAEs were recorded in both ears one day before (D0) and one month after surgery (D30). At D30, 20.5% of the patients showed an increase, 22.7% showed a decrease in contralateral TEOAEs amplitude and 56.8% remained stable. In the ear ipsilateral to the neuroma, TEOAE amplitude was significantly lowe

High-speed video analysis of acoustically oscillated guinea pig stapes.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the ossicular movement in the near-intact middle ear in response to acoustic stimulation using a high-speed video camera and video analysis software program. DESIGN: We have designed a good visual access to the middle ear of the guinea pig by opening the ventral wall of the otic capsule, without injuring the sound-conducting structures, from the external auditory canal to the oval window. The high-speed video camera could record analysable ossicular motion up to 4000 frames per second. RESULTS: The stapes showed reciprocal movement in the same frequency as the stim…

Influence of static middle ear pressure on transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions and distortion products.

Otoacoustic emissions (OAE) are influenced in their amplitude and frequency spectra by the middle ear. The effects of changes in the middle ear transmission mechanisms on transiently evoked OAE (TEOAE) and distortion product emissions (DPOAE) were investigated as a function of static ear canal pressure in 25 normal-hearing test persons aged 18-35 years. The ear canal pressure was varied stepwise between positive and negative values of 200 daPa. TEOAE and DPOAE amplitudes were attenuated significantly with changes of the static ear canal pressure, with greatest changes at low frequencies (< 2 k
