[Protection of the superior petrosal vein in microneurosurgery for acoustic neuroma].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical significance of the protection of superior petrosal vein (SPV) in the microneurosurgery for acoustic neuroma. METHODS: From January 2009 to July 2011, 149 cases of acoustic neuroma microsurgery were observed. The difference in hematoma in surgical area, cerebellar hematoma and cerebellar edema were compared between a SPV without protection group (SPVWP group, n=8) and a SPV protection group (SPVP group, n=141). RESULTS: In the 149 patients with acoustic neuroma, the SPV was reserved in 141 patients. In the SPVWP group (8 patients), hematoma in the surgery a

Physiological and acoustic characteristics of the female Music Theater voice.

Three Music Theater vocal qualities ("chesty belt," "twangy belt," and "legit") were investigated in female singers at their overlap range, between F#4-D5 (~370-600 Hz). Six experienced Music Theater singers performed each quality on two different vowels ([e], [ɔ]). Audio and electroglottographic (EGG) signals were recorded as well as the vocal tract impedance. In chesty belt and twangy belt, singers systematically tuned the frequency of their first vocal tract resonance (R1) to the second harmonic (2f(0)) up to C5. R1 remained lower in frequency for the legit quality. No tuning of the second

A survey analysis of acoustic trauma related to MR scans.

PURPOSE: The maximum limit of MR scanner noise and necessity of ear protection is defined in the IEC standard (IEC60601-2-33) of MR safety. With improvements in MR scanner performance, pulse sequences generating higher scanning noise have been used clinically. In this study, we investigated the factors significantly related to potential acoustic trauma cases (PATC) after MR examinations. To consider the future direction for MR safety and prevention of acoustic trauma, issues related to noise generation by MR scanners and acoustic trauma were systematically reviewed. METHODS: A statistical ana

Acoustic characteristics of voiceless bellowing typical of bovine rabies.

The use of auditory data visualization techniques was useful for distinguishing voiceless bellows of a rabid cow from the bellows of estrus-oriented cows, because rabid cows created two distinct sounds with a very short silence between inhalation and exhalation of the respiratory cycle. The auditory visualization techniques as a diagnostic tool may have the potential to serve as a basis for an Internet-based application for the early diagnosis of rabies.

Articulatory-acoustic kinematics: the production of American English /s/.

Due to its aerodynamic, articulatory, and acoustic complexities, the fricative /s/ is known to require high precision in its control, and to be highly resistant to coarticulation. This study documents in detail how jaw, tongue front, tongue back, lips, and the first spectral moment covary during the production of /s/, to establish how coarticulation affects this segment. Data were obtained from 24 speakers in the Wisconsin x-ray microbeam database producing /s/ in prevocalic and pre-obstruent sequences. Analysis of the data showed that certain aspects of jaw and tongue motion had specific kine

On-chip measurements of cell compressibility via acoustic radiation.

Measurements of mechanical properties of biological cells are of great importance because changes in these properties can be strongly associated with the progression of cell differentiation and cell diseases. Although state of the art methods, such as atomic force microscopy, optical tweezers and micropipette aspiration, have been widely used to measure the mechanical properties of biological cells, all these methods involve direct contact with the cell and the measurements could be affected by the contact or any local deformation. In addition, all these methods typically deduced the Young's m

[Stereotactic radiosurgery and fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy of acoustic neuromas].

Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is a neurosurgical field that has become increasingly important in the treatment of acoustic neuromas. Radiosurgical treatment modalities include the Gamma knife, the linear accelerator (LINAC), and the CyberKnife. Gamma knife radiosurgery (GKRS) is still unsurpassed in terms of the spatial accuracy of radiation delivery and has been used for decades in acoustic neuromas (>18000 patients). In contrast to surgical resection, the goal of SRS is long-term prevention of tumour growth with preservation of neurological function. Radiation-induced neuropathies rarely o

[Imaging of acoustic neuroma (vestibular schwannoma). Breakthrough or dilemma?].

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the diagnostic gold standard in vestibular schwannoma. Sensitivity and specificity are both close to 100%. MRI detects the tumour and describes its extension, thereby giving the potential surgeon prognostic clues. Prediction of tumour growth, however, is not possible. Careful analysis of imaging findings almost always enables differentiation from various other disease entities. Follow-up of surgical as well as non-surgical patients is another important role of MRI. Computed tomography (CT) is restricted to pre-surgical workup and to the immediate postoperati

Routine acoustic voice analysis: time to think again?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This paper reviews recent evidence regarding the validity and reliability of acoustic voice analysis in routine clinical assessments. The current role of jitter and shimmer, the most-used indices, and how their clinical application might be improved are evaluated. RECENT FINDINGS: Even though the evidence is limited, acoustic analysis is widely used to assist differential diagnosis, documentation and evaluation of treatment for clinical voice disorders. Recent clinical data have not shown that jitter and shimmer are absolute or independent indices of voice pathology or perc

Acoustic fall detection using one-class classifiers.

Falling represents a major health concern for the elderly. To address this concern we proposed in a previous paper an acoustic fall detection system, FADE, composed of a microphone array and a motion detector. FADE may help the elderly living alone by alerting a caregiver as soon as a fall is detected. A crucial component of FADE is the classification software that labels an event as a fall or part of the daily routine based on its sound signature. A major challenge in the design of the classifier is that it is almost impossible to obtain realistic fall sound signatures for training purposes.

Visual perception in acoustically deprived and normally hearing children.

In the present study an attempt was made to establish if and to what extent auditory deprivation modifies the processes of visual analysis and synthesis. The study included 54 children aged 10-16 years with hearing impairment attending the School and Educational Center for Children with Hearing Impairment in Wrocław (group I) and 127 children with normal hearing acuity attending public schools (group II), forming a reference group. Hearing impairment in the children of group I was from 60 to 100 dB. In 9 of these children the hearing impairment was inherited, while in some others it was acquir

The effect of contralateral acoustic stimulation on spontaneous otoacoustic emissions.

Evoked otoacoustic emissions are often used to study the medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferents in humans. There has been concern that the emission-evoking stimulus may itself elicit efferent activity and alter the evoked otoacoustic emission. Spontaneous otoacoustic emissions (SOAEs) are hence advantageous as no external stimulation is necessary to record the response in the test ear. Contralateral acoustic stimulation (CAS) has been shown to suppress SOAE level and elevate SOAE frequency, but the time course of these effects is largely unknown. By utilizing the Choi-Williams distribution, here

The use of mechanical acoustic vibrations to improve abdominal contour.

Adaptive effects caused by mechanical acoustic vibrations on the neuromuscular system are widely described. These vibrations applied to the muscle belly cause the "vibration tonic reflex" characterized by an improvement in power contraction of the stimulated muscle. Mechanical acoustic vibrations of moderate strength placed on limited body areas produce a positive muscle activity without damage. A prospective study from January to September 2006 investigated 60 sedentary patients presenting with muscular hypotrophy associated or not associated with lipodystrophy of the abdominal region who des

Amplitude modulation of DPOAEs by acoustic stimulation of the contralateral ear.

CONCLUSION: Otoacoustic emissions generated by outer hair cells (OHCs) are influenced by stimulation of the contralateral ear via a neural pathway involving the olivo-cochlear efferent system. This is often referred to as a contralateral 'suppression reflex', but we suggest that such a term is inappropriate since distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) can be both enhanced and suppressed, and there is continuous modulation with no threshold effects. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the continuous amplitude modulation of DPOAEs by contralateral sound stimulation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In

Middle fossa approach for acoustic tumor removal. 1992.

The middle fossa approach is useful for the removal of small acoustic tumors when hearing preservation is possible. This approach provides complete exposure of the contents of the internal auditory canal and positive facial nerve identification. Because access to the posterior fossa is limited, the middle fossa approach is most appropriate for tumors with less than 5 mm extension into the cerebellopontine angle. With the introduction of gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging, very small acoustic tumors are diagonosed more frequently, and the middle fossa approach is well-suited for the

Stereotactic radiation techniques in the treatment of acoustic schwannomas. 2007.

Medical decision-making is based on benefit-to-cost analysis. Optimally, treatment obtains a high degree of benefit while minimizing the physical, social, and financial costs. The goals of the treatment of acoustic schwannomas are prohibiting tumor growth and alleviation of symptoms caused by damage to local structures. These symptoms-tinnitus, ataxia, and hearing loss-secondary to eighth nerve dysfunction, as well as symptoms arising from damage to adjacent structures such as the facial nerve, trigeminal nerve, or pons, can be caused by tumor growth or treatment. Determination of optimal ther
