A remarkable adaptive paradigm of heart performance and protection emerges in response to marked cardiac-specific overexpression of ADCY8.

Adult (3 month) mice with cardiac-specific overexpression of adenylyl cyclase (AC) type VIII (TGAC8) adapt to an increased cAMP-induced cardiac workload (~30% increases in heart rate, ejection fraction and cardiac output) for up to a year without signs of heart failure or excessive mortality. Here, we show classical cardiac hypertrophy markers were absent in TGAC8, and that total left ventricular (LV) mass was not increased: a reduced LV cavity volume in TGAC8 was encased by thicker LV walls harboring an increased number of small cardiac myocytes, and a network of small interstitial proliferat

Disturbed Cardiorespiratory Adaptation in Preeclampsia: Return to Normal Stress Regulation Shortly after Delivery?

Women with pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia appear to be at increased risk of metabolic and vascular diseases in later life. Previous research has also indicated disturbed cardiorespiratory adaptation during pregnancy. The aim of this study was to follow up on the physiological stress response in preeclampsia several weeks postpartum. A standardized laboratory test was used to illustrate potential deviations in the physiological stress responding to mildly stressful events of the kind and intensity in which they regularly occur in further everyday life after pregnancy. Fifteen to sevent

Ecology of fish hearing.

Underwater sound is directional and can convey important information about the surrounding environment or the animal emitting the sound. Therefore, sound is a major sensory channel for fishes and plays a key role in many life-history strategies. The effect of anthropogenic noise on aquatic life, which may be causing homogenisation or fragmentation of biologically important signals underwater is of growing concern. In this review we discuss the role sound plays in the ecology of fishes, basic anatomical and physiological adaptations for sound reception and production, the effects of anthropogen

Global gene expression reveals stress-responsive genes in Aspergillus fumigatus mycelia.

BACKGROUND: Aspergillus fumigatus is a human fungal pathogen that causes aspergillosis in immunocompromised hosts. A. fumigatus is believed to be exposed to diverse environmental stresses in the host cells. The adaptation mechanisms are critical for infections in human bodies. Transcriptional networks in response to diverse environmental challenges remain to be elucidated. To gain insights into the adaptation to environmental stresses in A. fumigatus mycelia, we conducted time series transcriptome analyses. RESULTS: With the aid of RNA-seq, we explored the global gene expression profiles of m

Different mechanisms of resistance modulate sulfite tolerance in wine yeasts.

From a technological point of view, yeast resistance to sulfite is of great interest and represents an important technological character for winemaking. Several mechanisms are involved, and strain-dependent strategies to obtain SO2 resistance can deeply influence wine quality, although this choice is less relevant in determining the technological performance of the strain during fermentation. In this study, to better understand the strain-specific mechanisms of resistance, 11 Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains, whose genomes have been previously sequenced, were selected. Their attitude towards s

The maintenance of hybrids by parasitism in a freshwater snail.

Hybrids have often been labelled evolutionary dead-ends due to their lower fertility and viability. However, there is growing awareness that hybridisation between different species may play a constructive role in animal evolution as a means to create variability. Thus, hybridisation and introgression may contribute to adaptive evolution, for example with regards to natural antagonists (parasites, predators, competitors) and adaptation to local environmental conditions. Here we investigated whether parasite intensity contributes to the continuous recreation of hybrids in 74 natural populations

[Work at high altitude: concepts of physiopathology, risk factors, health surveillance and criteria for the development of work capacity evaluation criteria].

Work at high altitude (elevation equal to or greater than 3000 m above sea level) results in a physiological adaptation of the human organism to changing environmental conditions. The main problem related to the altitude is represented by the reduction of partial pressure of oxygen (hypoxia) that occurs in proportion to the reduction of barometric pressure. Our study, starting with an analysis of the human body's physiological response to acute hypoxic conditions and acclimatization for reaching protracted stays, takes into consideration all risk factors related to the performance of work at h

The fate of a progressive science: the Harvard Fatigue Laboratory, athletes, the science of work and the politics of reform.

In the early twentieth century, fatigue research marked a site of conflicting scientific, industrial, and cultural understandings of working bodies. Many fatigue researchers understood fatigue to be a physiological fact and allied themselves with Progressive-era reformers in urging industrial regulation. Reformers clashed with advocates of Taylorism, who held that productivity could be perpetually increased through managerial efficiency. Histories of this conflict typically cease with the end of the First World War. I examine the work of the Harvard Fatigue Laboratory in the 1920s and 1930s to

Impacts of warming on tropical lowland rainforests.

Before the end of this century, tropical rainforests will be subject to climatic conditions that have not existed anywhere on Earth for millions of years. These forests are the most species-rich ecosystems in the world and play a crucial role in regulating carbon and water feedbacks in the global climate system; therefore, it is important that the probable impacts of anthropogenic climate change are understood. However, the recent literature shows a striking range of views on the vulnerability of tropical rainforests, from least to most concern among major ecosystems. This review, which focuse

Plant latex and other exudates as plant defense systems: roles of various defense chemicals and proteins contained therein.

Plant latex and other exudates are saps that are exuded from the points of plant damage caused either mechanically or by insect herbivory. Although many (ca. 10%) of plant species exude latex or exudates, and although the defensive roles of plant latex against herbivorous insects have long been suggested by several studies, the detailed roles and functions of various latex ingredients, proteins and chemicals, in anti-herbivore plant defenses have not been well documented despite the wide occurrence of latex in the plant kingdom. Recently, however, substantial progress has been made. Several la

Changes in mineralised tissue at the site of origin of condylar fracture are present before athletic training in Thoroughbred horses.

AIM: To show that changes are present at the site of origin of metacarpal condylar fracture in young Thoroughbred horses before they enter race training. METHOD: Bone slices, 2 mm thick, in three mediolateral planes through the centre of rotation of the metacarpo-phalangeal joint (MCPJ) of both distal third metacarpal bones (Mc3) of 12 Thoroughbred horses aged 17 months, were imaged using point-projection digital X-ray imaging (muXR). RESULTS: In some horses, linear or ovoid radiolucency was found in articular calcified cartilage (ACC) and subchondral bone of the palmaro-distal aspect of the

Rest insertion combined with high-frequency loading enhances osteogenesis.

Mechanical loading can significantly affect skeletal adaptation. High-frequency loading can be a potent osteogenic stimulus. Additionally, insertion of rest periods between consecutive loading bouts can be a potent osteogenic stimulus. Thus we investigated whether the insertion of rest-periods between short-term high-frequency loading bouts would augment adaptation in the mature murine skeleton. Right tibiae of skeletally mature (16 wk) female C57BL/6 mice were loaded in cantilever bending at peak of 800 microepsilon, 30 Hz, 5 days/wk for 3 wk. Left tibiae were the contralateral control condit

The gut morphology of the African ice rat, Otomys sloggetti robertsi, shows adaptations to cold environments and sex-specific seasonal variation.

We studied the gut morphology of the ice rat Otomys sloggetti robertsi, a non-hibernating murid rodent endemic to the sub-alpine and alpine regions of the southern African Drakensberg and Maluti mountains. The gut structure of O. s. robertsi is well adapted for a high fibre, herbivorous diet, as is the case with other members of its subfamily Otomyinae. Despite the broad similarity in gross gut morphology with mesic- and arid-occurring otomyines, O. s. robertsi has a larger small intestine, caecum, stomach volume and parts of the colon, which we suggest are adaptations for increased energy upt

Responses of crayfish photoreceptor cells following intense light adaptation.

After intense orange adapting exposures that convert 80% of the rhodopsin in the eye to metarhodopsin, rhabdoms become covered with accessory pigment and appear to lose some microvillar order. Only after a delay of hours or even days is the metarhodopsin replaced by rhodopsin (Cronin and Goldsmith 1984). After 24 h of dark adaptation, when there has been little recovery of visual pigment, the photoreceptor cells have normal resting potentials and input resistances, and the reversal potential of the light response is 10-15 mV (inside positive), unchanged from controls. The log V vs log I curve

[Reactions of the adrenal cortex to immobilization stress in intact animals and against a background of hypokinesia].

Morphological investigation of the rat adrenal cortex and corticosterone contents in the blood plasma demonstrated certain peculiarities in the adrenal reaction to the primary and repeated immobilization stress in intact animals and after hypokinesia. It has been stated that morphological manifestation to an acute stress reaction kinesia is less pronounced than at an analogous single effect. Investigation on corticosterone content in blood plasma revealed certain functional peculiarities in the adrenal cortex reactions in different variants of the experiments. Five hours after the beginning of

Trophoblast adaptation to hypoxia: balance and dysfunction.

During placenta development, trophoblasts dynamically adapt to hypoxic microenvironments to orchestrate physiological functions and morphogenesis. Early gestation establishes a transient hypoxic niche essential for trophoblast stem cell (TSC) proliferation and differentiation. This niche undergoes a transition to physiological reoxygenation following the remodeling of uterine spiral arteries during gestational weeks 10 to 12, establishing a spatiotemporal oxygen gradient critical for placental development. Disrupted hypoxia sensing-exemplified by deficient hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) signal

Biomechanics of Manual-Bent Versus Patient-Specific Mandibular Implants.

The patient-specific mandibular reconstruction plate (PSMRP) has gained prominence for its precise adaptation to mandibular contours and reported enhanced mechanical reliability compared to the manual-bent mandibular reconstruction plate (MBMRP). Despite this, a biomechanical comparison between MBMRP and PSMRP is essential for informed clinical decision-making and advancing the field of mandibular reconstruction. Thereupon, biomechanical behavior was compared between two reconstructed mandibles with the MBMRP made of commercial pure titanium plate and the PSMRP stemmed from a common ramus reco

Dietary Microplastic Exposure in Athletes: Implications for Metabolism, Gut Health, and Performance.

Microplastics (MPs) are emerging environmental contaminants increasingly detected in foods, beverages, and food-contact materials, making dietary intake a relevant route of human exposure. In sports nutrition, this issue may be particularly important because athletes often have high food and fluid consumption, frequent use of packaged sports nutrition products, dietary supplements, bottled beverages, and sport-specific hydration strategies. This narrative review, supported by a structured literature search, examines dietary MP exposure and its potential relevance to gastrointestinal function,

8-Iso-Prostaglandin F2α and Lipoxygenase Gene Expression as Candidate Molecular Markers of Training Adaptation in Professional Volleyball Players: A Pilot Study.

Intensive training induces redox and inflammatory signaling that may facilitate adaptation but can also reflect excessive physiological strain. In this exploratory pilot longitudinal study, we assessed whether 8-iso-prostaglandin F2α (8-iso-PGF2α), a lipid peroxidation marker, and transcripts related to arachidonic acid lipoxygenase pathways change during a 10-week preparatory training period in elite female volleyball players. Twelve professional athletes were sampled at baseline after a training break and after training completion. 8-iso-PGF2α was quantified by gas chromatography-mass spectr
