Sexting in adolescent girls: A new way of self-expression? A scoping review.

Sexting is defined as the exchange of sexually explicit or suggestive messages and images through digital platforms. Significant attention has been given to potential risks, although little is known about the role in sexual identity development. Therefore, this scoping review aims to examine the prevalence of sexting among adolescent girls and explore the positive developmental functions, including self-expression. Eligibility criteria were adolescent girls aged 10-19 years, who examined sexting as the exchange of sexually explicit or suggestive digital content, and employed empirical methodol

Dyadic parent-adolescent relationship quality as pathways from maternal childhood abuse to adolescent psychopathology.

Children of maternal caregivers abused in childhood are at increased risk for mental health problems including anxiety and depression. To date, most studies exploring the intergenerational transmission of trauma have focused on younger children, with far fewer studies investigating adolescent mental health. Previous research suggests that maternal childhood abuse negatively impacts the parent-adolescent relationship, which may contribute to the development and maintenance of adolescent mental health problems. The current study examined dyadic reports of maternal-adolescent relationship quality

Stuttering and its treatment in adolescence: the perceptions of people who stutter.

UNLABELLED: Adolescence is a complicated phase of maturation during which a great deal of physical, neurological and social development occurs. Clinically this phase is thought to be the last chance to arrest the development of the disorder of stuttering before it becomes chronic in adulthood. However, little treatment development for this age group has occurred. Previous research on the impact of stuttering during adolescence presents a complex picture of apprehension about speaking which does not, however, appear to interfere with social life. The purpose of the present study was to investig

Maternal emotional feeding practices and adolescent daughters' emotional eating: Mediating roles of avoidant and preoccupied coping.

The current study examined the link between early childhood emotional feeding and adolescent girls' emotional eating, using maladaptive coping styles as the underlying mechanisms mediating these associations. We examined adolescent girls' and mothers' retrospective reports of emotional feeding during childhood, as well as adolescent girls' current reports of their coping behaviors (i.e., preoccupied and avoidant) and emotional eating. Findings showed that adolescent girls' and mothers' retrospective reports of early emotional feeding were positively associated with adolescent girls' emotional

Menarche onset is an inflection point for mental health and brain development.

Menarche is a normative milestone of female puberty, yet its role in adolescent mental health and brain development remains poorly understood. Using longitudinal data from 5,016 females (7 annual visits, ages 10-16 years) in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study, we found that menarche onset functions as an inflection point for the development of internalizing symptoms and gross brain morphometry. The onset of menarche, largely independent of timing and socio-environmental factors, preceded a significant spike in internalizing symptoms, while altering the rate of ongoing structural

Fostering the inclusion of teen fathers in adolescent health interventions: a call for structured and gender-inclusive programming.

Adolescent pregnancy remains a major global public health challenge, with significant consequences for health, education, and socioeconomic outcomes, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. While existing interventions have rightly prioritized adolescent mothers due to their biological and social vulnerabilities, this focus has inadvertently led to the systematic exclusion of teen fathers from adolescent health programming. Emerging evidence highlights that adolescent fathers play a critical role in maternal well-being, child development, and their own psychosocial outcomes. However,

Frontline Medical Professionals' Ability to Recognize and Respond to Suspected Youth Sex Trafficking.

OBJECTIVES: Many youth sex trafficking victims visit health care facilities while being trafficked. Little is known regarding whether frontline medical professionals recognize risk factors or are aware of effective interviewing approaches to identify and intervene for youth victims. The aim of the present study was to assess frontline medical professionals' knowledge of youth sex trafficking, adolescent development, and forensically informed interviewing to provide guidance for professional training. METHODS: Two hundred seventy-seven frontline medical professionals [first responders and emer…

Adolescent Deliveries in a Secondary-Level Care Hospital of Cameroon: A Retrospective Analysis of the Prevalence, 6-Year Trend, and Adverse Outcomes.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Adolescents are generally ill-equipped to deal with the burden of a pregnancy. A high prevalence of adolescent pregnancies is among the indicators of limitations toward the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals in most developing countries. We sought to determine the prevalence, 6-year trend, and adverse outcomes of adolescent deliveries. We also tested whether being married decreased the risk of adverse fetal outcomes in these adolescents. DESIGN: A 6-year retrospective register analysis. SETTING: Buea Regional Hospital. PARTICIPANTS: Birth records from 2007 to 2

Brain structure correlates of circulating endocannabinoids and related lipids in early adolescents.

The endocannabinoid (eCB) system underlies many biological processes and is thought to be critical in adolescent brain development. However, the eCB system's contributions to brain morphometry during adolescence remains understudied. Here we investigated cross-sectional associations between brain structure and circulating eCBs and related lipids in a subsample of adolescents (N = 294, ages 10-14, 44.5% female, 65.3% White) from the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) study utilizing a structural equation modeling approach. After accounting for sex and age, significant covariance

Interaction sequences in families of psychiatrically hospitalized and nonpatient adolescents.

A KEY theme running through competing views of family influences upon adolescent development is that of directionality, on two levels: influences within the flow of family interaction; and influences from family processes to individual adolescent development. In this paper our focus is upon the first level, intrafamilial sequences within families. More specifically, we study links between psychiatric impairment in adolescence and developmentally relevant parent-child and parent-parent sequences. This report extends a previous investigation (Hauser et al. 1984), which described our new family c…

Genetic influences impacting nicotine use and abuse during adolescence: Insights from human and rodent studies.

Nicotine use continues to be a major public health concern, with an alarming recent rise in electronic cigarette consumption. Heritability estimates of nicotine use and abuse range from 40% to 80%, providing strong evidence that genetic factors impact nicotine addiction-relevant phenotypes. Although nicotine use during adolescence is a key factor in the development of addiction, it remains unclear how genetic factors impact adolescent nicotine use and abuse. This review will discuss studies investigating genetic factors impacting nicotine use during adolescence. Evidence from both rodent and h

Tension pneumothorax in a patient with Covid-19 pneumonia initially misdiagnosed as volvulus.

Adolescence is a conserved developmental period associated with low alcohol responsivity, which can contribute to heavy drinking and development of an alcohol use disorder (AUD) later in life. To investigate ethanol responsivity between adolescent and adult rats, we developed an ethanol response battery (ERB) to assess acute ethanol responses across cumulative doses of ethanol during the rising phase of the blood ethanol curve. We tested the hypothesis that adolescent male and female rats would exhibit lower ethanol responsivity to a cumulative ethanol challenge relative to adults. Male and fe

Adolescent Immunization Schedule: Need for a Relook.

Adolescent immunization is one of the important yet a neglected field in India. There is no adolescent-specific schedule in the government's Universal Immunization Program. Though a separate adolescent immunization schedule exists for the private sector, there is almost no data on the coverage rates of the adolescent vaccines. With the changing epidemiology of certain vaccine preventable diseases, rapid development in the field of vaccinology and the advent of some new vaccines, there is a need to revisit the adolescent vaccination schedule. Common vaccine preventable diseases like dengue, mum

Parent and adolescent emotional variability and adolescent psychopathology.

Emotional variability has been posited as a risk factor for adolescent psychopathology. However, it is unclear whether parent emotional variability may also function as a risk factor that heightens adolescent mental health problems. To fill this gap, the present study examined whether parent and adolescent emotional variability in both positive emotion (PE) and negative emotion (NE) is associated with adolescent psychopathology and potential sex differences in these associations. Participants were 147 adolescents and their parents in Taiwan who completed a baseline assessment, a 10-day daily d

Hippocampal Volume Moderates the Link between Racial-Ethnic Discrimination and Early Adolescent Depression.

Adolescent depression has risen sharply, especially among racial-ethnic minority youth. While racial-ethnic discrimination is known to be linked with depression, there is limited understanding of how individual differences in brain development contribute to this process. Drawing on the framework of adolescent neurobiological susceptibility, this study examined the moderating role of hippocampal volume in the longitudinal association between racial-ethnic discrimination and adolescent depression. Using longitudinal data of racial-ethnic minority youth from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Develop

Impact of Neuroimmune System Activation by Adolescent Binge Alcohol Exposure on Adult Neurobiology.

Adolescence is a conserved neurodevelopmental period encompassing maturation of glia and the innate immune system that parallels refinement of brain structures, neurotransmitter systems, and neurocircuitry. Given the vast neurodevelopmental processes occurring during adolescence, spanning brain structural and neurocircuitry refinement to maturation of neurotransmitter systems, glia, and the innate immune system, insults incurred during this critical period of neurodevelopment, could have profound effects on brain function and behavior that persist into adulthood. Adolescent binge drinking is c

Countermovement Jump Analysis as a Predictor of Overhead Pitching Velocity in Adolescent Baseball Pitchers.

Lower limb strength is crucial in pitching, as force output correlates positively with pitching velocity. The countermovement jump (CMJ) is a common test for assessing lower limb strength, and previous research has hinted at its potential to predict performance in adult baseball players. However, further research is warranted concerning adolescent players. This study investigated the relationship between CMJ lower limb power and fastball velocity in adolescent baseball pitchers. Thirty-two adolescent male baseball pitchers from junior high school baseball teams executed three CMJs and threw fi

The Need to Optimize Adolescent Immunization.

The adolescent period heralds the pediatric patient's transition into adulthood. It is a time of dynamic development during which effective preventive care measures can promote safe behaviors and the development of lifelong health habits. One of the foundations of preventive adolescent health care is timely vaccination, and every visit can be viewed as an opportunity to update and complete an adolescent's immunizations. In the past decade, the adolescent immunization schedule has expanded to include 2 doses of quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine, 1 dose of tetanus, diphtheria, acellula

The relationship between harsh parenting and adolescent depression.

Guided by Beck's cognitive model of depression, this study comprehensively explores the mechanisms linking harsh parenting, rumination, and victimization to the development of adolescent depression. A total of 5047 adolescents were assessed using the Harsh Parenting Scale, Rumination Scale, Olweus Bullying/Victimization Questionnaire, and Beck Depression Inventory. The results indicated that harsh parenting positively influences adolescent depression. Moreover, rumination emerged as an important mediator between harsh parenting and adolescent depression, similar to victimization. Additionally,
