Representation of Afferent Signals from Forearm Muscle and Cutaneous Nerves in the Primary Somatosensory Cortex of the Macaque Monkey.

Proprioception is one's overall sense of the relative positions and movements of the various parts of one's body. The primary somatosensory cortex (SI) is involved in generating the proprioception by receiving peripheral sensory inputs from both cutaneous and muscle afferents. In particular, area 3a receives input from muscle afferents and areas 3b and 1 from cutaneous afferents. However, segregation of two sensory inputs to these cortical areas has not been evaluated quantitatively because of methodological difficulties in distinguishing the incoming signals. To overcome this, we applied elec

Sex- and afferent-specific differences in histamine receptor expression in vagal afferents of rats: A potential mechanism for sexual dimorphism in prevalence and severity of asthma.

The incidence of asthma is more common in boys than in girls during the childhood, and more common in premenopausal female than age-matched males. Our previous study demonstrated a gender difference in histamine-mediated neuroexcitability in nodose ganglia neurons (NGNs), highlighting a possibility of histamine-mediated gender difference in asthma via visceral afferent function. In the present study, we aimed to explore the gender difference in expression profiles of histamine receptors (HRs) in nodose ganglia (NG) and individual identified NGNs to provide deeper insights into the mechanisms i

Effects of furosemide on cochlear neural activity, central hyperactivity and behavioural tinnitus after cochlear trauma in guinea pig.

Cochlear trauma causes increased spontaneous activity (hyperactivity) to develop in central auditory structures, and this has been suggested as a neural substrate for tinnitus. Using a guinea pig model we have previously demonstrated that for some time after cochlear trauma, central hyperactivity is dependent on peripheral afferent drive and only later becomes generated intrinsically within central structures. Furosemide, a loop diuretic, reduces spontaneous firing of auditory afferents. We investigated in our guinea pig model the efficacy of furosemide in reducing 1) spontaneous firing of aud

TRPV1 receptors on unmyelinated C-fibres mediate colitis-induced sensitization of pelvic afferent nerve fibres in rats.

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease often suffer from gastrointestinal motility and sensitivity disorders. The aim of the current study was to investigate the role of transient receptor potential of the vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1) receptors in the pathophysiology of colitis-induced pelvic afferent nerve sensitization. Trinitrobenzene sulphate (TNBS) colitis (7.5 mg, 30% ethanol) was induced in Wistar rats 72 h prior to the experiment. Single-fibre recordings were made from pelvic nerve afferents in the decentralized S1 dorsal root. Fibres responding to colorectal distension (CRD) were identi

Central connection of the optic, oculomotor, trochlear and abducens nerves in medaka, Oryzias latipes.

Medaka (Oryzias latipes) is one of the few vertebrate experimental animals in which inbred lines have been established. It is also a species that has advanced in genetic studies in a manner comparable to zebrafish. This fish is therefore a good model for studying functional organization of the nervous system, but anatomical analysis of its nervous system has been limited to embryonic stages. In the present study, we investigated anatomy of cranial nerves in adult fish focusing on the visual function, using an inbred strain of medaka. Cranial nerves of medaka were labeled using biocytin, reveal

A urethral afferent mediated excitatory bladder reflex exists in humans.

An excitatory reflex between urethral flow receptors and the bladder has been established in animals, but attempts to demonstrate this reflex in humans using urethral fluid flow have been inconclusive. Intraurethral electrical stimulation has recently been shown to generate bladder contractions in animals and was applied to study the presence of an excitatory urethra to bladder reflex in humans. The prostatic urethra was stimulated electrically via a catheter-based electrode in five men with complete spinal cord injury. Bladder contractions were generated in four of five individuals, however,

Cerebellar climbing fibers modulate simple spikes in Purkinje cells.

Purkinje cells have two action potentials: Climbing fiber responses (CFRs) and simple spikes (SSs). CFRs reflect the discharge of a single climbing fiber at multiple synaptic sites on the proximal dendrite of the Purkinje cell. SSs reflect the summed action of a subset of parallel fiber synapses on Purkinje cell dendritic spines. Because mossy fiber afferents terminate on granule cells, the ascending axons of which bifurcate, giving rise to parallel fibers, the modulation of SSs has been attributed to mossy fiber afferent signals. This inference has never been tested. Conversely, the low disch

The effect of corpus callosum agenesis on neocortical thickness and neuronal density of BALB/cCF mice.

We used acallosal and normal adult BALB/cCF mice to test the hypothesis that the development of the corpus callosum is relevant for the establishment of a normal structure of the neocortex. Neuronal density and thickness of individual layers were analyzed in neocortical regions with abundant callosal connections (area 6 and the 17/18a border) and in the relatively acallosal area 17. In area 6, acallosal mice exhibited a total neocortical thickness smaller than that of normal mice, as well as thinner layers II+III and IV. Similar data were obtained at the 17/18a border, where the total thicknes

The anorectic effect of a chronic peripheral infusion of amylin is abolished in area postrema/nucleus of the solitary tract (AP/NTS) lesioned rats.

OBJECTIVE: Neurons in the area postrema/nucleus of the solitary tract (AP/NTS) region mediate amylin's anorectic effect elicited by a single intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of a low dose (5 microg/kg). Here, we tested if a sustained elevation in amylin levels which was achieved by chronic amylin infusion reduces food intake by acting in the AP/NTS region or, possibly, at other brain sites. Further, we tested the role of the AP/NTS region in mediating the anorectic effects of high doses of amylin and its receptor agonist salmon calcitonin (sCT) after an acute single injection. DESIGN: Amylin

Anatomic origin and clinical application of the widespread N18 potential in median nerve somatosensory evoked potentials.

N18 is a broad negativity, with a duration of approximately 20 msec after positive far-field potentials and is recorded widely over the scalp using a noncephalic reference. Its origin has been controversial but its preservation after pontine or upper medullary lesion while loss after high cervical lesions suggested its medullary origin. Comparison with animal studies and direct recording studies in humans leads the authors to conclude that N18 is most likely generated at the cuneate nucleus by primary afferent depolarization. Namely, dorsal column afferents send collaterals to interneurons wit

Lack of growth-associated protein-43 reemergence or of growth-associated protein-43 mRNA modulation in deafferented vestibular nuclei during the first 6 weeks after unilateral inner ear lesion.

We investigated whether a unilateral inner ear lesion that destroyed the labyrinthine receptors, the cochlear receptors, and the spiral ganglion induced collateral sprouting in rat vestibular and auditory brainstem nuclei, using growth-associated protein-43 (GAP-43) as an indicator of synaptic remodeling. Both immunocytochemistry and in situ hybridization were performed to detect a potential modulation of GAP-43 and of its messenger RNA (mRNA) at different times after surgery. We failed to observe a reemergence of GAP-43 or a modulation of its mRNA in the deafferented vestibular nuclei at all

A polysensory pathway to the forebrain of the pigeon: the ascending projections of the nucleus dorsolateralis posterior thalami (DLP).

Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) in the associative neostriatum caudolaterale (NCL) have shorter latencies than those recorded in other visual forebrain areas. Therefore visual input into NCL probably stems from a subtelencephalic relay. Tracing experiments revealed a projection of the nucleus dorsolateralis posterior thalami (DLP) into those portions of NCL in which visual, auditory, and somatosensory afferents from intratelencephalic parasensory areas terminate. Since VEPs in NCL are abolished after DLP-lesions, this structure has to be the critical relay. However, DLP also projects to other

Hereditarily elongated carotid sinus nerve in a rat colony.

A specific colony of Wistar rats was found in which the common carotid artery bifurcates at an unusually caudal position, thereby the carotid sinus nerve that originates from the bifurcation is elongated. The present study was done to determine whether this elongated nerve carries baro- and chemosensations in the same manner as the carotid sinus nerve of conventional rats or of other species. In chloralose-urethane anesthetized rats of this specific colony, the afferent discharges were recorded from the elongated carotid sinus nerve in response to a phenylephrine-induced rise in blood pressure

Innervation patterns of the lateral line stitches of the clawed frog, Xenopus laevis, and their reorganization during metamorphosis.

We quantitatively examined the afferent innervation pattern of the lateral line stitches of both larval and postmetamorphotic clawed frogs, Xenopus laevis, using a silver staining technique. We also studied the relevance of the number of neuromasts in a stitch to physiological properties, recording afferent activity with an electrode inserted directly into the neuromast. The innervation pattern changed during early metamorphosis, the fiber thickness increasing after the reorganization. We found three different innervation patterns: in type A stitches, the same two afferent fibers innervate all

Central reorganization of sensory pathways following peripheral nerve regeneration in fetal monkeys.

Transection of a sensory nerve in adults results in profound abnormalities in sensory perception, even if the severed nerve is surgically repaired to facilitate accurate nerve regeneration. In marked contrast, fewer perceptual errors follow nerve transection and surgical repair in children. The basis for this superior recovery in children was unknown. Here we show that there is little or no topographic order in the median nerve to the hand after median nerve section and surgical repair in immature macaque monkeys. Remarkably, however, in the same animals the representation of the reinnervated

Contribution of cerebrovascular parasympathetic and sensory innervation to the short-term control of blood flow in rat cerebral cortex.

In two groups of normotensive rats anaesthetised with halothane, either the nasociliary nerve (NCN) or the NCN and parasympathetic (PS) fibres together (NCN-PS) were functionally blocked at the right ethmoidal foramen. Blocking was achieved reversibly and repeatedly using a cooling probe. Cortical regional CBF (rCBF) was measured bilaterally using laser-Doppler probes. In Group 1, bilateral common carotid occlusion (CCO) was applied for 1 min both with and without block. In Group 2, CCO was applied permanently followed by stages of controlled haemorrhagic hypotension to deepen the ischaemia an

Effect of anesthesia of the chorda tympani nerve on taste perception in humans.

Individuals who have sustained considerable damage to parts of the taste system often fail to experience changes in everyday taste experience. The two halves of the tongue are independently innervated: the chorda tympani (branch of the facial or VIIth cranial nerve) innervating the anterior two-thirds and the glossopharyngeal (IXth cranial nerve) innervating the posterior one-third. Anesthesia of the chorda tympani nerve on one side produced increased taste intensities for some stimuli on the area innervated by the glossopharyngeal nerve on the other side. Because this effect occurs across the

Afferent contributions to intermediate area of the cat ventral medullary surface during mild hypoxia.

The intermediate area of the cat ventral medullary surface activates to mild hypoxia. Carotid body and vagal afferent contributions to this response were examined by recording activity levels, measured as changes in scattered 660 nm light, from the medullary surface in 7 anesthetized, spontaneously breathing cats following 12% O2 in N2 ventilatory challenge. A miniaturized video camera collected images synchronous with the peak of cardiac R wave at 1/s, from a 3.2 mm diameter area, before, and following bilateral carotid sinus denervation (CSD) and vagotomy. In intact animals, hypoxia increase

The effects of lithium chloride on the activity of the afferent nerve fibers from the abdominal visceral organs in the rat.

The effect of lithium chloride on the activity of the afferent nerve fibers from the abdominal organs was studied in anesthetized rats. The administration of the lithium chloride solution (0.15 M) over the mesentery increased afferent discharge rate of the splanchnic and vagal gastric nerve. Injection of the same solution into the portal vein caused an increase in afferent activity of the vagal hepatic nerve. Further, infusion of the same solution into the duodenum resulted in facilitation of the afferent activity of the splanchnic as well as vagal celiac nerves. The results may explain the me
