Soft opaque contact lenses in binocular vision problems.

Soft opaque contact lenses may be useful in certain recalcitrant vision problems. When the full central area is opaque, contact lenses eliminate the visual image, provide acceptable cosmesis, and may be useful in cases of intractable diplopia as well as in the treatment of amblyopia. Artificial iris contact lenses eliminate para-axial rays in monocular diplopia, aniridia, and albinism.

Factors relating to visual acuity in children who have been treated for convergent squint.

Retrospective analysis of a selected sample of children who presented with convergent squint has shown that abnormal meridional hypermetropia (3.5 D or more) at age 1 was the principal factor associated with severe amblyopia (6/24 or less) remaining after conventional treatment. Neither the reported age of onset nor delay in presentation influenced the final visual outcome.

[Hamartoma of the pigment epithelium and retina. Apropos of a case].

The retinal pigment epithelium and retinal hamartoma is a rare benign tumor. We describe a case of combined hamartoma of the pigment epithelium and retina in an eight year-old-girl with strabismus and amblyopia. The fluoresceinic angiography and the echography allowed to exclude a malignant tumor of the retina or the choroid. The clinical follow-up confirmed that the lesion was stationary. History, pathogeny, differential diagnostics and treatment are discussed.

Clinical controversy: congenital unilateral and jaw-winking ptosis.

Paediatric ptosis is routinely more challenging than adult ptosis with considerations such as amblyopia, difficulty of examination and at what age surgery should be performed. Unilateral severe congenital ptosis and jaw-winking ptosis raise additional questions of which surgical procedure and whether unilateral or bilateral surgery should be performed. A panel of international experts answer questions relating to two clinical scenarios.

Ocular aspects of Apert syndrome.

Patients with Apert syndrome inevitably have ocular problems. These include proptosis, strabismus, amblyopia, optic atrophy, and occasionally papilledema. Visual loss or blindness is a real possibility and can be avoided. Craniofacial surgery, while alleviating proptosis, may cause an alteration in strabismus, visual loss, and tearing problems. These children should always be assessed and followed by an ophthalmologist as part of the craniofacial team.

Persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous in male twins.

Persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV) occurs sporadically and few familial occurrences have been reported. The authors report PHPV unassociated with other congenital anomalies in male twins. One underwent a lensectomy for the management of angle-closure glaucoma and the other was treated for amblyopia. These cases provide further evidence to suggest autosomal recessive inheritance, though the possibility of developmental error cannot be excluded.

Improving Adult Vision Through Pathway-Specific Training in Augmented Reality.

Neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders are often associated with selective deficits in the parallel pathways of the human visual system. Effective intervention of the visual deficits is crucial for improving treatment outcomes and prognosis. In this study, a novel altered reality (AR) method is developed to improve pathway-specific functions in human adults with normal vision and amblyopia, a common developmental vision disorder. To selectively enhance the parvocellular pathway, which is notably impaired in amblyopia, the low spatial frequency (SF) components of visual input are ph…

There was no significant change in visual acuity or astigmatism, so amblyopia and astigmatism reduction are poor indications for limbal dermoid excision. Evaluating the Acute Effect of Stereoscopic Recovery by Dichoptic Stimulation Using Electroencephalogram.

Amblyopia is a common developmental disorder in adolescents and children. Stereoscopic loss is a symptom of amblyopia that can seriously affect the quality of patient's life. Recent studies have shown that the push-pull perceptual learning protocol had a positive effect on stereoscopic recovery. In this study, we developed a stereoscopic training method using a polarized visualization system according to the push-pull protocol. Dichoptic stimulation for 36 anisometropic and amblyopic subjects and 33 children with normal visual acuity (VA) has been conducted. Electroencephalogram (EEG) was used…

[Diagnostic and differential diagnostic potential of mitochondrial DNA assessment in patients with Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy].

OBJECTIVE: To study the primary mutations of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) associated with Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) in patients with optic neuropathy. METHODS: Seventy-nine patients with a variety of bilateral optic neuropathy were examined. Mutations at np 3,460, np 11,778 and np 14,484 of mtDNA were tested by PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism technique to detect DNA in peripheral blood. The samples were taken from 16 cases of clinically diagnosed LHON, 44 cases of suspected LHON, two cases of alcohol amblyopia, four cases of multiple sclerosis, five cases of autosom…

Reappraisal of occlusion therapy for severe structural abnormalities of the optic disc and macula.

The visual function of some children with structural defects of the macula or optic nerve has previously been shown to improve with occlusion therapy. The charts of five children, ages 4 to 8 years, who had various types of severe structural abnormalities were reviewed. Two patients had optic nerve hypoplasia; there was one case each of foveal hypoplasia, posterior persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous, and retinopathy of prematurity. All the patients had undergone extensive amblyopia therapy prior to referral. In three children, occlusion therapy had been initiated and continued intensivel…

[Developing effective intervention strategies for congenital cataract to facilitate visual rehabilitation].

Congenital cataract is a blinding condition that presents at birth. Form-deprivation amblyopia can be developed and has become the leading cause of childhood blindness in China. For the problems and challenges in the treatment of congenital cataract, this article discusses the surgical treatment and postoperative rehabilitation strategies and emphasizes the importance of developing effective intervention strategies to improve the visual outcomes in children with congenital cataract, providing valuable guidance for clinical treatment.

A smartphone ocular alignment measurement app in school screening for strabismus.

BACKGROUND: Strabismus is the leading risk factor for amblyopia, which should be early detected for minimized visual impairment. However, traditional school screening for strabismus can be challenged due to several factors, most notably training, mobility and cost. The purpose of our study is to evaluate the feasibility of using a smartphone application in school vision screening for detection of strabismus. METHODS: The beta smartphone application, EyeTurn, can measure ocular misalignment by computerized Hirschberg test. The application was used by a school nurse in a routine vision screenin…

Periocular hemangiomas and lymphangiomas.

Infantile hemangiomas are the most common benign tumor of childhood. Lymphangiomas are benign hamartomatous vascular tumors. Both lesions can be problematic when located in the periocular region. Pediatricians must be familiar with the characteristics of each which would necessitate referral to an ophthalmologist or other subspecialist for evaluation, including obstruction of the visual axis which can lead to amblyopia of the affected eye. Additional potential complications include proptosis, ocular motility limitation, optic nerve injury, and poor eyelid closure with or without corneal surfac…

[History of strabismology: II--strabismology in Poland].

The author presents an outline of strabology development in Poland since the 50s. Original ideas of Polish authors are provided, with three schools of treating strabismus existing in this country being discussed. In the final part the author highlights the differences between the method used in Szczecin and that in other centres implementing previous principles. The lack of consensus among the supporters of different methods is attributed to variability in the interpretation concerning the inception of mono- and binocular visual sensations, both in physiology and squinting subjects.
