Soil salinity and aridity specify plague foci in the United States of America.

Plague is a deadly zoonosis that periodically reemerges as small outbreaks in geographically limited foci where the causative agent Yersinia pestis may reside in soil. We analyzed a dataset of 1.005 carefully documented plague cases that were georeferenced over 113 years in peer-reviewed literature in the contiguous United States. Plotting outbreaks by counties defined as plague foci on geographical maps, we observed a significant co-localization of plague outbreaks with high soil salinity measured by an electric conductivity of >4 dS/ m-1 and aridity measured by an aridity index <0.5. Thus, w

Hepatitis Delta Prevalence in South America: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) has been associated with acute or chronic hepatitis in Latin America, but there is no prevalence study covering South American countries. This meta-analysis aimed to estimate anti-HDV prevalence through a systematic review of published articles in English, Portuguese and Spanish until December 2017. Searches were conducted in Health Virtual Library, Capes, Lilacs, PubMed, and SciELO, according to defined criteria regarding participant selection and geographical setting. Study quality was assessed using the GRADE guidelines. Pooled anti-HDV prevalence was calculated

Underutilization of Bowel Ultrasound in North America in Children with Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic relapsing disease that requires evaluation using multiple objective tools. In Europe, bowel ultrasound (US) is a widely accepted modality used for the management of patients with IBD; however, its use in North America has only recently emerged as a potential technique. OBJECTIVES: Our goal was to identify current practice patterns of pediatric gastroenterologists and radiologists using bowel US in patients with IBD and highlight perceived limitations to the widespread adoption of this modality in North America. METHODS: A 14-question

Predictors of noncompliance to pulmonary tuberculosis treatment: An insight from South America.

PURPOSE: To investigate the factors associated with a higher risk of noncompliance to tuberculosis (TB) treatment in Porto Alegre, Brazil. METHODS: We identified 478 adult patients for this case-control study undergoing treatment for confirmed pulmonary TB. Cases (noncompliance) were defined as patients who stopped treatment for more than 30 consecutive days (n = 118). Controls were defined as all patients who completed treatment and were cured (n = 360). Factors associated with noncompliance were calculated with unadjusted and adjusted odds ratio (OR). RESULTS: The rate of noncompliance in

Projecting the end of the Zika virus epidemic in Latin America: a modelling analysis.

BACKGROUND: Zika virus (ZIKV) emerged in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region in 2013, with serious implications for population health in the region. In 2016, the World Health Organization declared the ZIKV outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern following a cluster of associated neurological disorders and neonatal malformations. In 2017, Zika cases declined, but future incidence in LAC remains uncertain due to gaps in our understanding, considerable variation in surveillance and the lack of a comprehensive collation of data from affected countries. METHODS: Our an

What are the blood lead levels of children living in Latin America and the Caribbean?

INTRODUCTION: Information on the prevalence of lead exposure is essential to formulate efficient public health policies. Developed countries have implemented successful public policies for the prevention and control of lead poisoning. In the United States, Canada, Japan and the European Union, for instance, periodically repeated prevalence studies show that blood lead levels (BLLs) in children have decreased overall. Although BLL of Latino children in the U.S. have also dropped in recent years, the geometric mean remains higher than that of white children. Little is known about lead exposure i

Assisted reproduction techniques in Latin America: the Latin American Registry, 2014.

Multinational data on assisted reproduction techniques (IVF and intractytoplasmic sperm injection [ICSI], frozen embryo transfer, oocyte donation, preimplantation genetic diagnosis and fertility preservation) were collected from 159 institutions in 15 Latin American countries. A total of 41.34% of IVF-ICSI cycles were conducted in women aged 35-39 years and 23.35% in women aged 40 years and older. After removing freeze-all cases, delivery rate per oocyte retrieval was 25.05% for ICSI and 27.41% for IVF. Multiple births included 20.78% twins and 0.92% triplets and over. In oocyte donation, twin

Genomic insights into the ancient spread of Lyme disease across North America.

Lyme disease is the most prevalent vector-borne disease in North America and continues to spread. The disease was first clinically described in the 1970s in Lyme, Connecticut, but the origins and history of spread of the Lyme disease bacteria, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto (s.s.), are unknown. To explore the evolutionary history of B. burgdorferi in North America, we collected ticks from across the USA and southern Canada from 1984 to 2013 and sequenced the, to our knowledge, largest collection of 146 B. burgdorferi s.s. genomes. Here, we show that B. burgdorferi s.s. has a complex evolut

'Apostles of Continence': Doctors and the Doctrine of Sexual Necessity in Progressive-Era America.

In the first decades of the twentieth century, a group of doctors under the banner of the social hygiene movement set out on what seemed an improbable mission: to convince American men that they did not need sex. This was in part a response to venereal disease. Persuading young men to adopt the standard of sexual discipline demanded of women was the key to preserving the health of the nation from the ravages of syphilis and gonorrhoea. But their campaign ran up against the doctrine of male sexual necessity, a doctrine well established in medical thought and an article of faith for many patient

Epidemiology of eating disorders in Latin America: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Eating disorders are currently not considered to be limited to Western culture. We systematically reviewed the existing literature on the prevalence of eating disorders in Latin America. RECENT FINDINGS: Of 1583 records screened, 17 studies from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Venezuela were included in the analysis. Most studies reported point-prevalence rates and only three studies provided lifetime and 12-month prevalence rates. We found a mean point-prevalence rate of 0.1% for anorexia nervosa, 1.16% for bulimia nervosa, and 3.53% for binge-eating disord

Consensus, Dilemmas, and Challenges in Living Donor Liver Transplantation in Latin America.

We reviewed the history, volume, outcomes, uniqueness, and challenges of living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) in Latin America. We used the data from the Latin American and Caribbean Transplant Society, local transplant societies, and opinions from local transplant experts. There are more than 160 active liver transplant teams in Latin America, but only 30 centers have used LDLT in the past 2 years. In 2014, 226 LDLTs were done in the region (8.5% of liver transplant activities). Living donor liver transplantation is mainly restricted to pediatric patients. Adult-to-adult LDLT activities

Historical Trends in the Hepatitis C Virus Epidemics in North America and Australia.

BACKGROUND: Bayesian evolutionary analysis (coalescent analysis) based on genetic sequences has been used to describe the origins and spread of rapidly mutating RNA viruses, such as influenza, Ebola, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and hepatitis C virus (HCV). METHODS: Full-length subtype 1a and 3a sequences from early HCV infections from the International Collaborative of Incident HIV and Hepatitis C in Injecting Cohorts (InC3), as well as from public databases from a time window of 1977-2012, were used in a coalescent analysis with BEAST software to estimate the origin and progression o

Implementing a screening program for acromegaly in Latin America: necessity versus feasibility.

INTRODUCTION: Acromegaly is a rare disease with a large burden due its associated comorbidities and the life-long management required. Since the occurrence and severity of associated complications are related to length of exposure to the excess growth hormone seen in acromegaly, early diagnosis is imperative. The delay in diagnosis, however, can be long, and may be the result of a lack of disease awareness and screening programs. Since acromegaly is an uncommon disease, finding ways to increase recognition and diagnosis that would permit early detection in a logical and cost-effective manner c

[Chromosome 7q11.23 duplication syndrome. First reported case in Latin America].

7q11.23 duplication syndrome is a disease caused by duplication of a region of chromosome 7 comprising 26 genes. The first case described in the literature was reported by Somerville et al. in 2005, who described a patient with dolichocephaly, high and narrow forehead, long eyelashes, high and wide nose, short philtrum, high arched palate, dental malocclusion, retrognathia, and severe language delay. We report the case of a Colombian patient with 7q11.23 duplication by comparative genomic hybridization techniques, and classical clinical findings, this being the first reported case in Colombia

Host switching of human lice to new world monkeys in South America.

The coevolution between a host and its obligate parasite is exemplified in the sucking lice that infest primates. In the context of close li … clustered with the haplotypes of Amazonian head lice that are prevalent in tropical regions in the Americas, a natural habitat of New World monkeys. Because this phylogenetic group forms a separate branch within the clade of lice from humans that were of American origin, this finding indicates that human lice have transferred to New World monkeys.

Social structure, infectious diseases, disasters, secularism, and cultural change in America.

Why do cultures change? The present work examined cultural change in eight cultural-level markers, or correlates, of individualism in the United States, all of which increased over the course of the 20th century: frequency of individualist themes in books, preference for uniqueness in baby naming, frequency of single-child relative to multichild families, frequency of single-generation relative to multigeneration households, percentage of adults and percentage of older adults living alone, small family size, and divorce rates (relative to marriage rates). We tested five key hypotheses regardin

Identification of musculoskeletal disorders in medically underserved regions of South America and Vietnam.

CONTEXT: Musculoskeletal disorders have been implicated as the leading cause of disability throughout the world, representing a high percentage of the disease burden in many nations. Anecdotal evidence suggests that musculoskeletal pain has become increasingly pervasive, especially among rural populations of developing countries. OBJECTIVE: To characterize specific musculoskeletal disorders in medically underserved regions where these issues have not yet been thoroughly examined. METHODS: The sample comprised adult residents receiving care during brief medical outreach trips to South America
