PURPOSE: Visual deprivation disrupting binocular development, such as that occurring with congenital cataract, is reported to cause asymmetric monocular optokinetic nystagmus (MOKN), as well as poor sensory and motorfusional outcome. We wanted to determine if symmetric MOKN could develop in cases of congenital cataract with good fusional outcome.
METHODS: We tested MOKN (with video and electro-oculographic recordings) and stereoacuity on 5 patients with good visual acuity and satisfactory ocular alignment after surgery for congenital cataract.

We reviewed the cases of 21 patients (22 eyes) who underwent epikeratophakia for aphakia with at least 4 months' follow-up. Thirteen had traumatic cataracts, six had relative contraindications for implantation of an intraocular lens (IOL), one had a dislocated IOL and one had bilateral congenital cataracts. The immune system of the eye is closely connected with the immune system of homeostasis regulation of the body. The present research was aimed at the detection of the correlations between blood serum levels of autoantibodies to native and denatured DNA and the clinical course of the postoperative period after IOL implantation to cataract patients. Increased titers of both antibody types were found prognostically valuable. If only one parameter is increased (antibody titer to one DNA), the prognostic value of the test is reduced by 30%.

Cyclocryotherapy in the treatment of aphakic open-angle glaucoma (AO), aphakic angle-closure glaucoma (ACL), and neovascular glaucoma (NVG) was evaluated in 96 eyes of 96 patients. Factors that determine pressure control after filtering surgery were studied in 194 eyes of 158 patients in a retrospective study. Emphasis was placed on the cumulative probability method of Kaplan and Meier and multiple regression analysis. Aphakia and the presence of a surgical bleb were the most important factors. A controlled clinical study with random allocation of method of rehabilitation (lens implant or contact lenses) was designed for comparative outcome assessments. Major cataracts developed in 28 of 168 eyes during the six months after pars plana vitrectomy for complications of diabetic retinopathy. In only ten of these cases did the cataract influence the visual results. The visual acuities of the phakic and aphakic eyes six months after vitrectomy were almost identical. A retrospective investigation was carried out of 100 patients below the age of 60 years operated for presenile cataract. PURPOSE: To compare patients who underwent scleral fixation using the Yamane technique with and without simultaneous pars plana vitrectomy.
METHODS: A total of 37 patients were included in the study. Eighteen underwent simultaneous pars plana vitrectomy.
