CONTEXT: Anorexia nervosa (AN) patients present with restrictive food behavior (AN-R). Some of them develop episodes of bulimia (AN-BP) without any clear pathophysiological explanation to date. Their clinical differentiation is important but not easily performed. Orexigenic/anorexigenic peptides measurements could provide some clues for that matter.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to determine whether the circadian profile of total and acylated ghrelin, obestatin, and peptide YY (PYY) levels is different in AN-R subjects when compared with AN-BP patients.

Fat is often fed to dairy cows to increase the energy concentration of their diet; however, feeding fat often reduces dry matter intake (DMI), which limits its impact on metabolizable energy (ME) intake. To investigate the effects of postruminal fat infusion on intake, feeding behavior, and milk production of dairy cows at two stages of lactation (55 and 111 d postpartum), six Holstein x British Friesian cows were infused into the abomasum, with a mixture of rapeseed and sunflower oils supplying predominantly unsaturated long-chain fatty acids (LCFA). Dry matter intake was significantly depres

Oxytocin (OT) affects many behavioral, psychological, and physiological functions, including appetite and body weight regulation. Central and peripheral OT levels are markedly affected by gonadal steroids, especially estrogen, and the anorectic effects of estrogen are partially mediated by OT in rodents. In this study, the relationship between the estrogen milieu and serum OT levels was evaluated in women of reproductive age under physiological (n = 9) and supraphysiological estrogenic conditions (n = 7). Consequently, it was found that serum OT levels were increased in physiological (the ovul

Anorexia nervosa (AN) can probably be regarded as a "model" for studying the interaction of nutrition with the gut-brain axis, which has drawn increased attention from researchers and clinicians alike. The gut microbiota influences somatic effects, such as energy extraction from food and body weight gain, as well as appetite, gut permeability, inflammation and complex psychological behaviors, such as depression or anxiety, all of which play important roles in AN. As nutrition is one of the main factors that influence the gut microbiota, nutritional restriction and selective eating in AN are li

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a genetic disorder characterized by short stature, low lean body mass, muscular hypotonia, mental retardation, behavioral abnormalities, dysmorphic features, and excessive appetite with progressive obesity. It is caused by lack of expression of genes on the paternally inherited chromosome 15q11.2-q13. This genetic disorder has an estimated prevalence that ranges between 1/10,000-1/30,000. Hypothalamic dysfunction is a common finding in PWS and it has been implicated in several manifestations of this syndrome such as hyperphagia, temperature instability, high pain

Anhedonia is a core symptom of depression, but the underlying neurobiological mechanisms are unknown. Correlative neuroimaging studies implicate dysfunction within ventromedial prefrontal cortex, but the causal roles of specific subregions remain unidentified. We addressed these issues by combining intracerebral microinfusions with cardiovascular and behavioral monitoring in marmoset monkeys to show that over-activation of primate subgenual anterior cingulate cortex (sgACC, area 25) blunts appetitive anticipatory, but not consummatory, arousal, whereas manipulations of adjacent perigenual ACC

Ghrelin was discovered in 1999 as the endogenous ligand of the growth-hormone secretagogue receptor 1a (GHSR1a). Since then, ghrelin has been found to exert a plethora of physiological effects that go far beyond its initial characterization as a growth hormone (GH) secretagogue. Among the numerous well-established effects of ghrelin are the stimulation of appetite and lipid accumulation, the modulation of immunity and inflammation, the stimulation of gastric motility, the improvement of cardiac performance, the modulation of stress, anxiety, taste sensation and reward-seeking behavior, as well

Separate studies have implicated the lateral habenula (LHb) or amygdala-related regions in processing aversive stimuli, but their relationships to each other and to appetitive motivational systems are poorly understood. We show that neurons in the recently identified GABAergic rostromedial tegmental nucleus (RMTg), which receive a major LHb input, project heavily to midbrain dopamine neurons, and show phasic activations and/or Fos induction after aversive stimuli (footshocks, shock-predictive cues, food deprivation, or reward omission) and inhibitions after rewards or reward-predictive stimuli

New eating behavior disorders such as bigorexia (muscle dysmorphia) and orthorexia are appearing in developed countries. These disorders have not been officially recognized so that they are not classified as independent entities. The term orthorexia comes from the Greek word orthos (straight, proper) and orexia (appetite). It is characterized by the pathological obsession for biologically pure food, which leads to important dietary restrictions. Orthorexic patients exclude foods from their diets that they consider to be impure because they have herbicides, pesticides or artificial substances a

Many molecules are involved in the regulation of feeding behavior, and they and their receptors are located in the brain hypothalamus and adipocytes. On the basis of evidence suggesting an association between the brain and adipose tissue, we propose the concept of the brain-adipose axis. This model consists of (l) the expression of endogenous molecules and/or their receptors in the hypothalamus and peripheral adipose tissue, (2) the function of these molecules as appetite regulators in the brain, (3) their existence in the general circulation as secreted proteins and (4) the physiological affe

Although ND are considered cognitive disorders, in fact ND present with behavioral and even medical symptomatology years to decades prior to the onset of cognitive changes. Recognizing prodromal ND syndromes is a public health priority because ND is common, disabling and expensive. Diagnosing prodromal ND in real world clinical settings is challenging because ND of the same pathol

To elucidate the role of the plant lipoxygenase (LOX)/lyase pathway for host search behavior of two parasitic wasps attacking herbivorous larvae, an Arabidopsis mutant (all84) was isolated with a mutation somewhere in the LOX/lyase pathway. Detached leaves of the mutant were shown to release less (Z)-3-hexenal, a first green leaf volatile (GLV) product of the LOX/lyase pathway. The braconid larval parasitoids studied, Cotesia glomerata and Cotesia plutella, differ in their ability to discriminate among plant volatiles induced by feeding of lepidopteran hosts and nonhosts: C. plutella only resp

Fenfluramine (2.5 and 5 mg/kg) significantly suppressed the food intake of rats following food deprivation, administration of 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2DG), and during tail pressure. This suggests that fenfluramine has relatively general anorectic potency. Other "serotonergic" anorectics were studied for comparison. In a second experiment we determined that norfenfluramine and quipazine greatly suppressed food intake following food deprivation but, at the same doses, had relatively small effects on water intake following water deprivation. This was true for intraperitoneal and cerebroventricular rou

The objective of this study was to clarify the role of a novel agonist with high selectivity and affinity for Y4 receptors in the regulation of food intake. The Y4 receptor agonist BVD-74D was administered to C57BL/6J mice that were fed with a normal or high-fat diet, and to fatty liver Shionogi (FLS)-ob/ob mice; the food intake, water intake, and body weight gain were measured in these mice. In the mice fed with a normal diet, the cumulative food intake significantly decreased at 20 min and 1 h after the administration of 1 mg/kg of BVD-74D and at 1, 2, 4, 8, and 24 h after the administration

Methylphenidate (MPH) is an amphetamine derivative widely prescribed for the treatment of attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder. Recent concern over its genotoxic potential in children [11] spurred a study on the effects of chronic MPH treatment in a nonhuman primate population and the studies reported here were conducted in conjunction with that study in the same animals. Here, the focus was on the ability of juvenile rhesus monkeys to learn how to perform a battery of operant behavioral tasks while being treated chronically with MPH. Performance of the National Center for Toxicological Re
