Deletion of the short arm of chromosome 18 produces a highly variable phenotype. Mental retardation, short stature, and an abnormal facies are invariably present. About 9% of patients with this syndrome have cardiac pathology.

We have used a recombinant phage library enriched for chromosome 22 sequences to isolate and characterize eight anonymous DNA probes detecting restriction fragment length polymorphisms on this autosome. These were used in conjunction with eight previously reported loci, including the genes BCR, IGLV, and PDGFB, four anonymous DNA markers, and the P1 blood group antigen, to construct a linkage map for chromosome 22. The electromyographic responses of arm and shoulder muscles to vibrations were studied in three postures similar to the postures of drilling in a ceiling, drilling in a wall and drilling in a floor. Supracondylar osteotomy for traumatic cubitus varus is usually considered to be difficult, and to have a significant incidence of complications. Most difficulty is in maintaining correction after operation. We report 20 osteotomies performed by a modification of French's technique and managed postoperatively with the elbow extended. When a plaster splint was used only three of seven cases had good or satisfactory results, two requiring revision. This study is based on a sample of 9,134 children ranging in age from 2 to 17 years from which the excessively lean and fat children by skinfold thickness were excluded. This sample was derived from the combined data sets of the first and second National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES I and II) of 1971-1974 and 1976-1980. A rearrangement of the short arm of chromosome #12 with a breakpoint at band 12 was found in 4 out of 15 patients with CMML: two deletions, one simple translocation (9;12)(p21;p12) and one complex t(11;12;13)(p11;p12;q21). Their haematological and clinical characteristics were investigated together with those of 5 other similar published cases. Although this alteration is not very frequent in this myelodysplastic syndrome, and is also found in various other malignant blood disorders, it is clearly a non-random phenomenon, the consequences of which are discussed.

The localisation of the gene for Hunter syndrome (MPS II) has been studied in 11 families using 12 polymorphic DNA markers, one on the short arm and the remaining 11 located at various points on the long arm of the X chromosome. Lod scores for seven probes were uniformly negative for all values of theta; positive scores at values of theta = 0.10 or more were obtained for the five probes located most distally on the long arm (52A, F9C, DX13, St14-1, F8C). Cytogenetic studies on four patients with T-cell lymphomas are reported. In all four the short arm of chromosome No. 6 (6p) was abnormal. In three cases it was involved in a translocation, and in one there was a deletion of the terminal part: del(6)(p23-24). One of the translocations could be identified as a t(2:6)(q24;p24). Patients with distal deletions of the long arm of chromosome 7q have been reported with a variety of non-specific findings. Ocular findings have been limited to hypertelorism, palpebral fissure abnormalities, strabismus and speckled irides and no intraocular pathology with the exception of one case with unilateral optic nerve coloboma. We report a patient with terminal deletion of the long arm of chromosome 7 with marked ocular abnormalities including severe microphthalmus and large retinal colobomas.

Two mentally and physically retarded girls, one with an interstitial deletion 7 (pter leads to q21::q32 leads to qter), and the other with an interstitial deletion 7 (pter leads to q11::q22 leads to qter), are described. Their clinical features are compared with those of 11 earlier reported cases with a deletion 7q. The Hageman factor, the locus of which is assigned to the distal part of 7q, was in both cases within normal limits. The data available do not justify the delineation of a specific clinical syndrome.
