Bilateral retinal detachment in a case of Reiter's disease.

A patient is described who developed co-existent Reiter's disease and bilateral non-traumatic retinal detachment. Although numerous ophthalmological disorders are associated with Reiter's disease and HLA-B27, to our knowledge this is the first report of co-existent retinal detachment. Although this relationship may be fortuitous, there are a number of immunological mechanisms common to both entities. Retinal detachment, unlike bilateral conjunctivitis and acute anterior uveitis, may be clinically asymptomatic and its sequelae prevented by appropriate ophthalmological assessment.

A case of Reiter's disease complicated by fulminating colitis.

We describe a patient who, 6 months after the onset of Reiter's disease associated with a destructive peripheral arthritis and keratodermia blenorrhagica, developed fulminating colitis. The possible relationship between Reiter's disease and ulcerative colitis is discussed, and the need for further family studies to assess its validity is stressed.

Pathogenesis of human leukocyte antigen B27-positive arthritis. Information from clinical materials.

In the spondyloarthropathies human leukocyte antigen (HLA) B27 confers a strong genetic predisposition to the development and to the chronicity of disease after extra-articular infection with certain gram-negative bacteria. The close relationships between infection, HLA-B27, other genetic factors, and the host immune system, however, still are unexplained. HLA-B27-positive arthritis continues to be an area of intensive investigation in basic and clinical research. New animal models with HLA-B27 transgenic mice and rats, as well as recent developments in understanding the processes involved in

Polyarthritis associated with hydatid disease (echinococcosis) of the liver.

A 36-year-old male developed asymmetric polyarthritis during the course of hydatid disease of the liver. Excision of the hydatid cyst was accompanied by full remission of the arthritis without recurrence during the 7-year follow-up period. This sequence of clinical events suggests an eventual cause and effect relationship. A "reactive" immune mechanism, triggered by a parasite located at a distant site, appears to be responsible for this type of arthritis.

[Etiologic aspects of Reiter syndrome. Role of yersinial infections (author's transl)].

Reiter syndrome occurs as a reaction to various infections, either by intracellular microorganisms (Chlamydia, Mlycoplasma) or by intestinal bacteria (dysenteric bacilli, Salmonella, Campylobacter, Klebsiella, Yersinia). Four personal observations of Reiter syndrome following yersinial infections (Yersinia enterocolitis in two cases and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis in the two other cases) are reported. Data concerning the yersinial etiology of Reiter syndrome are reviewed.
