Elucidating the Role of SET as a Key Contributor to Neurodevelopmental Disability Within the 9q34.11 Deletion Syndrome Interval.

The 9q34.11 chromosomal region contains multiple neurodevelopmental genes involved in synaptic transmission, axonal structure and neuronal maturation. Pathogenic microdeletions, duplications and single nucleotide variants in numerous genes were previously linked with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). Amongst them, SET has recently been implicated in a rare NDD with speech delay and facial dysmorphism. This study reports a female with a heterozygous de novo deletion impacting SET but not other NDD-associated genes at 9q34.11. The proband was initially diagnosed with atypical Rett syndrome wi

Design of a personalized oral‒motor exercise device for speech impairment rehabilitation.

Introduction: Dysarthria is a speech disorder that stems from impaired muscle control due to lesions in the articulatory system, necessitating targeted rehabilitation exercises to strengthen affected muscles. Current devices used for rehabilitation often fail to accurately assess exercise execution, which limits their effectiveness. Methods: This study introduces a novel oral-motor rehabilitation device designed to overcome these limitations. The device features flexible sensors and a signal processing module that provides real-time feedback on training intensity. It is integrated with a mobil

The National Institutes of Health INvestigation of Co-occurring conditions across the Lifespan to Understand Down syndromE (INCLUDE) Project: Accelerating research discoveries for people with Down syndrome across the lifespan.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has a long-standing history of support for research in Down syndrome (DS). In response to a 2018 congressional directive for a trans-NIH initiative to address medical issues in DS, NIH launched the INCLUDE Project (INvestigation of Co-occurring conditions across the Lifespan to Understand Down syndromE). Reflecting the three INCLUDE components of basic science research, cohort development, and clinical trials, the Project has published funding opportunities to address conditions such as immune disorders and Alzheimer's disease. Due to a steady expansion

Assessing cardiovascular disease risk in women with a history of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy: A guidance paper for studies using administrative data.

BACKGROUND: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are a major cause of maternal morbidity and mortality, and their association with increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk represents a major public health concern. However, assessing CVD risk in women with a history of these conditions presents unique challenges, especially when studies are carried out using routinely collected data. OBJECTIVES: To summarise and describe key challenges related to the design and conduct of administrative studies assessing CVD risk in women with a history of HDP and provide concrete recommendations for a

Medicinal Cannabis and Implications for Workplace Health and Safety: Scoping Review of Systematic Reviews.

PURPOSE: Although medicinal cannabis is prescribed for conditions such as pain, epilepsy, nausea and vomiting during cancer treatment, evidence about associated adverse side effects is still evolving. Because adverse events (AEs) might impact the performance of workers, it is important to consider their implications on workplace health and safety (WHS). This study aimed to map the types and prevalence of the AEs associated with medical cannabis and articulate how those events could impact WHS. METHODS: A scoping review of systematic reviews and/or meta-analyses published between 2015 and Marc

Development and validation of a portable articulated dynamometry system to assess knee extensor muscle strength.

Muscle strength assessment is important in predicting clinical and functional outcomes in many disorders. Manual muscle testing, although commonly used, offers suboptimal accuracy and reliability. Isokinetic dynamometers (IKDs) have excellent accuracy and reliability; but are bulky and expensive, offering limited accessibility. This study aimed to design a portable dynamometer that is accessible, accurate and reliable, and to validate the device in a general population. The portable articulated dynamometry system (PADS) is a portable device with an embedded high-precision load cell, designed t

Trueness of Fit of Biphasic Transversely Isotropic Parameters Model in the Porcine Temporomandibular Joint Disc and Mandibular Condylar Cartilage and Regional Dependence.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders (TMDs) are not well understood and the mechanical differences between the regions of the mandibular condylar cartilage (MCC) and the TMJ disc have not been thoroughly compared. As of now, there are no commercially available regenerative therapies for the TMJ. Elucidating the mechanical properties of these two structures of the articulating joint will help future efforts in developing tissue engineering treatments of the TMJ. In this study, we evaluate the compressive properties of the porcine disc and mandibular condylar cartilage by performing unconfine

Distinct and Untamed: Articulating Bulimic Identities.

Bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa are inextricably linked, with substantial clinical and epidemiological overlaps. Yet, while anorexia has been analyzed extensively in medical anthropology, bulimia remains under-theorized. This is, perhaps, because, compared to self-starvation, binge eating presents a logic of practice that is difficult to reconcile with culturally reified notions of self-control, transcendence, and hard work. Thus, although anthropologists have analyzed anorexic subjectivities as imbued with a sense of cleanliness and purity, moral superiority, and heroics, similar analyse

Voicing the lifeworld: Parental accounts of responsibility in genetic consultations for polycystic kidney disease.

When parents, who are carriers of or are affected by a genetic disorder, make decisions about the health risks faced by their children, there may be multiple factors to consider. These may include the medical benefits, the parents' own experiences of learning about their genetic status, and the future autonomy of the child. Health professionals face the challenge of explaining the possible burdens as well as benefits of testing children, while promoting open communication within families about the risk of an inherited condition. While genetic consultations do not in themselves constitute decis

Longitudinal formant analysis after cochlear implantation in school-aged children.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this investigation was to describe the correlation between vocal and hearing development by longitudinal analysis of sound spectrograms, as a basic system for evaluating progress in vocal development. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Two school-aged children with prelingual deafness were evaluated diachronically to assess speech perception and speech intelligibility after cochlear implantation. One child had non-syndromic hearing impairment without any known neurological deficit except for hearing loss, while the other had hearing impairment accompanied by mild mental retard

Characteristics of cleft palate speech.

In recent years, interest in the nature of cleft palate speech and the influences on speech quality has increased. This overview of contemporary research reveals new perspectives on cleft palate speech development and the phonological consequences of early articulatory constraints. Cleft palate speech is perceived as the result of the synthesis between physical, physiological, cognitive and linguistic development. Developmental influences on cleft palate speech are considered in the context of early vocalisations of cleft and non-cleft children, followed by an examination of the literature on

Subtypes of developmental dyslexia: testing the predictions of the dual-route and connectionist frameworks.

We investigated the phonological and surface subtypes of developmental dyslexia in light of competing predictions made by two computational models of single word reading, the Dual-Route Cascaded Model (DRC; Coltheart, Rastle, Perry, Langdon, & Ziegler, 2001) and Harm and Seidenberg's connectionist model (HS model; Harm & Seidenberg, 1999). The regression-outlier procedure was applied to a large sample to identify children with disproportionately poor phonological coding skills (phonological dyslexia) or disproportionately poor orthographic coding skills (surface dyslexia). Consistent with the

Phonological short-term store impairment after cerebellar lesion: a single case study.

The cerebellum is a recent addition to the growing list of cerebral areas involved in the multifaceted structural system that sustains verbal working memory (vWM), but its contribution is still a matter of debate. Here, we present a patient with a selective deficit of vWM resulting from a bilateral cerebellar ischemic lesion. After this acute event, the patient had impaired immediate and delayed word-serial recall and auditory-verbal delayed recognition. The digit span, however, was completely preserved. To investigate the cerebellar contribution to vWM, four experiments addressing the functio

Reconstruction of oral cavity defects with FAMM (facial artery musculomucosal) flaps. Our experience.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: The facial artery musculomucosal (FAMM) flap is a good option for covering small and medium-sized defects in the oral cavity because of its similar tissue characteristics and easy implementation. METHODS: We reviewed our results using this flap between 2006 and 2014. A total of 20 patients were included and 25 FAMM flaps were performed, 16 right (64%) and 9 left (36%) flaps. Five patients had simultaneous bilateral reconstructions. The indications for flap surgery were reconstruction after resection of tumours in the floor of the mouth (8 cases, 40%), tumours in o

[Contributions of medical hypnosis to orthodontic treatment].

Hypnosis is making a comeback in all of the medical disciplines. But in a world where everyone wants to control everything and manage everything, it's helpful to know that hypnosis is a dynamic process that cannot be forced on anyone, a psychic reality, clearly demonstrated today by brain imaging. Hypnosis does not take any power over the individual. It is just one more tool to help ease patient's discomfort. It is also useful to avoid professional burnout to provide care without depleting our energy and without wasting our valuable time. Medical hypnosis is a real asset for providing comforta

Linkage of speech sound disorder to reading disability loci.

BACKGROUND: Speech sound disorder (SSD) is a common childhood disorder characterized by developmentally inappropriate errors in speech production that greatly reduce intelligibility. SSD has been found to be associated with later reading disability (RD), and there is also evidence for both a cognitive and etiological overlap between the two disorders. The present study tested whether SSD is linked to replicated risk loci for RD. METHOD: One hundred and eleven probands with SSD and their 76 siblings were tested with measures of speech, phonological memory (Nonword Repetition-NWR), and phonolog

Acoustic analysis of parkinsonian speech II: L-Dopa related fluctuations and methodological issues.

The drug L-Dopa is used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD), and patients often experience fluctuations in performance after a period of time taking L-Dopa. This paper reviews the literature pertaining to these fluctuations. While a number of researchers have examined L-Dopa related fluctuations in general, these fluctuations have rarely been addressed in speech research. To examine the effect of L-Dopa related fluctuations a number of methodological issues need to be addressed including time of day, anxiety level, disease stage, and drug regimen differences. Strategies are proposed f

Speech in unilateral and bilateral cleft palate patients from Stockholm.

The speech of 84 patients with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate and 19 patients with complete bilateral cleft lip and palate was judged by professional listeners and compared with a control group of 40 noncleft subjects. The unilateral cleft group consisted of two subgroups: one group of 45 patients, who were treated with presurgical orthopedics before primary surgery, and one group of 39 patients, who were not. The speech of the patients and the noncleft subjects was tape recorded and randomly mixed prior to listener judgments. No significant differences in articulation or resonance w
