The use of psychostimulants to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been controversial for a number of reasons. In an effort to clarify the extent to which the psychostimulant methylphenidate has abuse potential, the existing published evidence has been reviewed and is summarized here, with an emphasis on delineating a number of related but independent issues that are often confused. The existing evidence reviewed is pertinent to three questions: Does stimulant drug use increase the risk for substance abuse later in life? Do ADHD medications have the potential for abuse?,

We explored the possibility of diagnostic confusion between hypersomnias of central origin (narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia, IH) and the adult form of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We included 67 patients with narcolepsy, 7 with IH and 61 with ADHD. All patients completed the Epworth Sleepiness Scale and the ADHD Rating Scale. We found that 18.9% of the hypersomnia patients fulfilled the self-reported criteria for ADHD in adulthood, compared with 77% of the ADHD patients. A score > or =12 on the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (usually regarded to indicate excessive daytime s

More than a decade of research regarding the motoric characteristics of the attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) that accompanies Tourette syndrome has revealed unique anatomic and neurobehavioral differences and highlighted the importance of distinguishing children with this form from the 40% of children with Tourette syndrome who do not have ADHD. This distinction is important in providing guidance to parents and to patients and in formulating expectations for short- and long-term prognoses. In addition, study methodologies that fail to categorize patients in this way and instead

OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: To explore association between prevalence of ADHD and levels of risk for gestational alcohol exposure, the authors reviewed the charts of 2,231 youth referred for fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. Participants were categorized into four groups by different levels of risk for gestational alcohol exposure. For each group, the prevalence rates of ADHD and other selected disorders were determined.
RESULTS: The disorder ranking first in overall prevalence was ADHD (41%), followed by learning disorder (17%) and oppositional-defiant/conduct disorder (16%). Prevalence rates of

BACKGROUND: Bulimia nervosa and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) share several key features, including impulsivity and low self-esteem. Stimulant medications have been highly effective in the treatment of ADHD. However, medication management of bulimia with antidepressants has demonstrated only partial resolution of bulimic symptoms. To date, there are no published reports of controlled trials evaluating the efficacy of stimulants for bulimia. The purpose of this paper is to report 6 patients with comorbid bulimia and ADHD who were treated with the stimulant medication, dextroam

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a behavioral syndrome that arises in early childhood, often co-occurs with conduct disorder and leads, developmentally, to antisocial behavior and substance abuse. Models from cognitive and affective neuroscience have been invoked in an effort to understand the development of ADHD, leading to a broad array of interrelated theories and hypothesized mechanisms. In this paper, we highlight core mechanisms that may cut across several theories and constructs, and thus provide some leverage for further study and conceptualization from a neuroscience

This paper provides a review of safety and efficacy data as well as of pharmacological characteristics of atomoxetine, a new drug treatment for the Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). To date, the only pharmacological treatment available in France for children and adolescents diagnosed with ADHD is methylphenidate, a psychostimulant drug. However, the clinical response to methylphenidate may be absent or insufficient in about 20-30% drug-treated children while the occurrence of adverse effects with methylphenidate (sleep disturbances, loss of appetite, tics increase...) may someti

The co-occurrence of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and substance use disorders has received considerable attention in recent clinical and scientific investigations. These two disorders are linked to one another in a variety of ways. The core symptoms of ADHD may be mimicked by the effects of psychoactive substance use, making it difficult to diagnose one disorder in the presence of the other. Individuals with ADHD may demonstrate earlier onset of the substance abuse and a pattern of more frequent or intense use. ADHD symptoms were explored as possible antecedents of opioid de

OBJECTIVE: Eighteen extended multigenerational families were recruited from the genetically isolated Paisa community in Colombia to conduct genetic studies of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This report describes the inclusion strategy and clinical features of participants to facilitate comparisons with other data sets.
METHOD: Families were selected through a fixed-sampling scheme beginning with child probands referred for clinical evaluation for ADHD. Direct structured psychiatric interviews were conducted with 433 informative individuals, including 92 children aged 4 to 11

To better characterize pediatric psychopathology after neurological insult, secondary attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (SADHD)-or ADHD that develops after traumatic brain injury (TBI)-and its clinical and neuroimaging correlates were investigated. Outcome data were available for 118 children, ages 5 through 14 at the time of hospitalization following TBI (severe TBI n = 37; mild-moderate TBI n = 57) and orthopedic injury (n = 24). Standardized psychiatric, adaptive functioning, cognitive functioning, family functioning, and family psychiatric history assessments were conducted on all p

This study used a community sample of 494 twins with a reading disability (223 girls, 271 boys) and 373 twins without a reading disability (189 girls, 184 boys) to assess the relation between reading disability (RD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Symptoms of DSM-III and DSM-IV ADHD were classified into symptoms of inattention and symptoms of hyperactivity-impulsivity (H/I). Results indicated that individuals with RD were more likely than individuals without RD to meet criteria for ADHD and that the association between RD and ADHD was stronger for symptoms of inattention t

Symptoms of DSM-IV attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) were determined in patients entering methadone maintenance treatment. The relationship of ADHD to psychiatric and substance abuse comorbidity, attention testing, and treatment outcome was analyzed; 19% of patients had a history of ADHD, and 88% of these had current symptoms. Continuous Performance Testing indicated poorer attention in patients with ADHD. The only substance use disorder more common in the ADHD group was clonidine. There was significantly more current axis I, dysthymic disorder, anxiety disorder (including social

A 5-year-old boy presented with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder and separation anxiety disorder. The clinical assessment revealed longstanding parent-child relationship problems, ongoing family stress, and a chronic level of low grade depression in the mother. The treatment approach consisted of drug treatment of the child and long-term psychotherapy of the mother. At termination symptoms associated with ADHD were markedly reduced and parent-child relationship problems were no longer evident. It is argued that in a subgroup of children family stre

Behavioral deficits are often noted in children with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and other individuals with prenatal alcohol exposure, including mental retardation, learning problems, social problems, and deficits in attention. Because attention deficit, hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been diagnosed so frequently in children with FAS and other alcohol related birth defects, there has been speculation that alcohol is an etiological factor in ADHD. To examine the relationship between behavior characteristics of children with fetal alcohol exposure and those seen in children with a diagnosis

Three separate groups, using MRI, have reported basal ganglia abnormalities in Tourette's syndrome (TS). We found similar abnormalities in boys with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Because TS and ADHD are frequently comorbid, we contrasted ADHD boys with and without TS along with control subjects. As expected, we found a significant loss of the normal globus pallidus asymmetry in the patients, but presence or absence of TS did not differentiate the ADHD groups. We conclude that accounting for ADHD comorbidity will be important in future TS morphometric studies.

Whole-blood serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) levels were measured in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with and without comorbid conduct disorder (CD) or oppositional-defiant disorder (ODD). It was hypothesized that the whole-blood 5-HT levels of ADHD probands would be significantly correlated with the whole-blood 5-HT levels of their mothers. Fifty-two children who met DSM-III-R criteria for ADHD were selected consecutively from an ADHD clinic (47 males--35 Caucasians, 10 African-Americans, and 2 Hispanics; 10 females--all Caucasians). Whole-blood 5-HT was ass

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most prevalent neurodevelopmental conditions in children and adolescents, characterized as inattentive, impulsive, and hyperactive. Numerous magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies have revealed atypical brain function and structure in ADHD, and multimodal MRI studies contribute to a better understanding of the neurobiological underpinnings of ADHD. METHODS: The demographic and clinical information and the structural and functional MRI scans used in this study were all obtained from the New York University Child Study C

INTRODUCTION: ADHD is typically characterised by inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity, often persisting into adulthood and influencing occupational performance, social interactions, and mental well-being. This scoping review and narrative synthesis aims to address a critical knowledge gap by systematically mapping the existing research on ADHD in military contexts with regard to psychosocial and occupational outcomes. As such, the aims of this study were (a) to aggregate findings regarding ADHD and psychosocial and occupational outcomes of military personnel and (b) to critically review

BACKGROUND: Young adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at increased risk of experiencing alcohol use problems compared to peers without ADHD. Poorer parent-rated social functioning has been associated both positively and negatively with alcohol use among youth with ADHD. However, individuals' self-perceptions of their sociability, or comfort in social situations, could be more specifically linked to risky alcohol outcomes via drinking motives. We tested associations among ADHD, self-reported sociability, social and coping drinking motives, and alcohol use outcomes in
