Thirty-eight patients of NIDDM, 12 of IDDM and 10 healthy age matched controls were subjected to seven standardised autonomic reflex function tests. A scoring criteria was utilised for diagnosing and grading the severity of dysautonomia. Eight patients of IDDM and 24 of NIDDM had dysautonomia. One-third of the patients in each group had grade IV autonomic dysfunction. Severity of autonomic dysfunction was directly related to the duration of disease in NIDDM whereas in IDDM this relation was not seen. Peripheral neuropathy was almost always associated with dysautonomia in NIDDM. On the contrary

BACKGROUND: The degree of involvement of the autonomic nervous system in progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) has been investigated in several studies, often providing conflicting results. There is a need for a better characterization of autonomic dysfunction in PSP, to enhance our understanding of this highly disabling neurodegenerative disease including patients' needs and possibly be of value for clinicians in the differential diagnosis among Parkinsonian syndromes.
METHODS: We applied a systematic methodology to review existing literature on Pubmed regarding autonomic nervous system invol…

The enteric nervous system (ENS) is a unique component of the autonomic nervous system found within the wall of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. What distinguishes the ENS is its size, containing as many neurons as the spinal cord, and its ability to function in the absence of connections to the central nervous system.

We reveal unexpected origins of age induced departure from 1/f-type temporal scaling in healthy human heart rate. Contrary to the widely established view, we provide evidence that age induced dynamical imbalance in the autonomic control is not due to the emergent functional dominance of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), but due to emerging (age dependent) relative dynamic dominance of the parasympathetic nervous system function. In particular, we demonstrate that the age induced alterations of healthy heart rate dynamics asymptotically resemble those in so-called primary autonomic failure

Cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction (CVAD) is a prevalent yet underrecognized nonmotor manifestation of Parkinson's disease (PD) that adversely affects morbidity, prognosis, and quality of life. Framed by the heart-brain axis, this review examines bidirectional interactions between neurodegeneration and cardiovascular control, synthesizing clinical and preclinical evidence from 2015 to 2025. We searched PubMed for English-language studies addressing autonomic involvement in PD and cardiovascular outcomes; of 1035 records identified, more than 240 met inclusion criteria following removal of du

The term "autonomic syncope" has recently been introduced in the literature to encompass non-cardiac causes of syncope in which the autonomic nervous system plays a key role in its pathophysiology. The phenotypic classification into bradycardic, hypotensive, and mixed types has enabled a more precise approach to diagnosis and treatment. This narrative review will present the latest updates with a practical focus, emphasizing the importance of diagnostic tools such as ambulatory blood pressure monitoring and the tilt table test. Additionally, advances in personalized treatments will be discusse…

Autonomic dysfunction (AD) in people with MS (pwMS) is a frequent finding. This narrative review will present an overview of central neural mechanisms involved in the control of cardiovascular and thermoregulatory systems, and methods of autonomic nervous system testing will be discussed thereafter. Since the need for standardization of autonomic nervous system (ANS) testing, we will focus on the standard battery of tests (blood pressure and heart rate response to Valsalva maneuver and head-up tilt, and heart rate response to deep breathing test plus one of the tests for sudomotor function), w…

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction may reportedly occur after a coronavirus-disease-2019 (COVID-19) infection, but the available evidence is scattered. Here we sought to understand the acute and mid-term effects of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection on cardiovascular autonomic function.
METHODS: We performed a systematic PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, medRxiv, and bioRxiv search for cases of cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction during an acute SARS-CoV-2 infection or post-COVID-19 condition. The clinical-demographic characteristics of individ

OBJECTIVE: Autonomic disorders are common in chronic illness, and their symptoms may restrict the daily functioning of patients. However, in chronic heart failure, extensive knowledge about autonomic symptoms is still lacking. This study aims to explore self-perceived autonomic symptoms, associated factors, and their relationship with health-related quality of life in chronic heart failure.
METHODS: One hundred and twenty-four patients with documented chronic heart failure (men and women; 50-86 years) and 124 sex and age-matched controls participated in this study. The participants filled val

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Autonomic disorders offer a fascinating view of the complexity of the nervous system. Their impact on human health ranges from benign to severe. Deciphering autonomic symptoms and signs draws on the cognitive skills and personal interest in the plight of patients that first attracted many physicians to the field of neurology. This article provides tools to sharpen those skills.
RECENT FINDINGS: Autonomic neuroscience and accumulated clinical knowledge have led to the categorization of autonomic disorders into specific syndromes that can be identified on the basis of clinica

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an expanding field in neurosurgery and has already provided important insights into the fundamental mechanisms underlying brain function. One of the most exciting emerging applications of DBS is modulation of blood pressure, respiration and micturition through its effects on the autonomic nervous system. DBS stimulation at various sites in the central autonomic network produces rapid changes in the functioning of specific organs and physiological systems that are distinct from its therapeutic effects on central nervous motor and sensory systems. For example, DBS…
