Using direct and indirect immunofluorescent techniques, we studied ten patients with cicatricial pemphigoid (chronic cicatricial conjunctivitis). Serologic and histologic evaluation of 13 conjunctival, 12 mucous membrane, and 11 skin specimens from the ten patients showed that three had immunoglobulin deposition at the basement membrane zone of the conjunctiva. One patient had immunoglobulin deposited in the affected skin and oral mucosa. Two patients had circulating basement membrane zone antibodies that bound to their own tissue but not to guinea pig lip or human skin.

The effect of age on the compositional analysis of human Descemet's membrane was examined. Membranes were obtained from human corneas ranging from 0.5 to 95 years and purified by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) extraction. Substantial age-related changes were obtained in the amino acid compositions of the SDS-insoluble basement membranes. These results suggested that compositonal changes occur during the aging process, which appeared to reflect an alteration in the subunit make-up of the basement membrane.

Patients with one form of cicatricial pemphigoid have IgG autoantibodies directed against laminin 5 (alpha3beta3gamma2), an adhesion protein in epidermal basement membrane. PURPOSE: This study evaluated the demographics, treatment outcomes, histology, and basement lamina characteristics of a large series of lymphangiomas.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty-seven lymphangiomas of the oral cavity were evaluated microscopically and representative specimens were also evaluated immunohistochemically (IMH) and by electron microscopy (EM).
