Differential Associations of Depressive Symptomology to HIV Care Engagement Among Young Black Sexual Minority Men with HIV (YBSMM+) in the US South: A Multi-Group Analysis of Mood, Intimate Partner Violence, and Alcohol Use.

Young Black Sexual Minority Men with HIV (YBSMM+) in the US South encounter multiple socio-structural challenges that contribute to disproportionately poor HIV-related outcomes across the care continuum. Depression, anxiety, intimate partner violence (IPV), and alcohol use are prominent factors that negatively impact engagement with HIV care. Syndemic theory posits that these multiple factors interact synergistically to promote poor outcomes; however, depression itself is highly heterogeneous in presentation, which may pose issues when examining associations to HIV care engagement. Nutritional Status and Diet Style Affect Cognitive Function in Alcoholic Liver Disease.

Malnutrition and cognitive dysfunction are typical features of alcoholic liver disease (ALD) and are correlated with the development of comp … nificant differences. In the T-maze test, alcohol significantly delayed the time to reach food, and binge drinking provided a temporary recovery in cognition. The alcohol-induced delay was significantly reduced in the high-carbohydrate and high-fat diet groups. Synaptic function exhibited no changes in all groups. Cognitive dysfunction is affected by nutritional …

Intra-nucleus accumbens shell injections of R(+)- and S(-)-baclofen bidirectionally alter binge-like ethanol, but not saccharin, intake in C57Bl/6J mice.

The GABAB agonist baclofen has been widely researched clinically and preclinically as a treatment of alcohol use disorders (AUDs). However, the efficacy of baclofen remains uncertain. The clinically used racemic compound can be separated into separate enantiomers. These enantiomers have produced different profiles in behavioral assays, with the S- compound often being ineffective compared to the R- compound, or the S- compound antagonizing the effects of the R- compound. We have previously demonstrated that the R(+)-baclofen enantiomer decreases binge-like ethanol intake in the Drinking-in-the

Emerging issues in the relationship between adolescent substance use and suicidal behavior.

Adolescent suicidal behavior poses a major global public health concern as it is highly prevalent and associated with mortality and morbidity worldwide. Substanceuse disorders are also an issue of increasing concern among adolescents and have been shown to increase the risk for suicidal behaviors. In this review we address emerging issues in the relationship between adolescent substance use disorders and suicidal behaviors. We focus on common hazardous patterns of substance abuse such as binge drinking and poly-substance abuse and point out developing patterns of substance preferences as evide…

Ethyl glucuronide and ethyl sulfate.

Alcohol misuse is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Although clinical history, examination, and the use of self-report questionnaires may identify subjects with harmful patterns of alcohol use, denial or under-reporting of alcohol intake is common. Existing biomarkers for detecting alcohol misuse include measurement of blood or urine ethanol for acute alcohol consumption, and carbohydrate-deficient transferrin and gamma-glutamyl transferase for chronic alcohol misuse. There is a need for a biomarker that can detect excessive alcohol consumption in the timeframe between 1 day

Saturday night palsy or Sunday morning hangover? A case report of alcohol-induced Crush Syndrome.

Saturday night palsy is a colloquial term given to brachial plexus injuries of the arm resulting from stretching or direct pressure against a firm object, often after alcohol or drug consumption. In most circumstances, this condition gives rise to a temporary plexopathy, which generally resolves. However, if the compression is severe and prolonged, a more grave form of this condition known as 'Crush Syndrome' may occur. Skeletal muscle injury, brought about by protracted immobilization, leads to muscle decay, causing rhabdomyolysis, which may in turn precipitate acute renal failure. This condi

Fifty-nine patients with Mallory-Weiss gastroesophageal lacerations are described. These patients consisted of 6% of all cases of upper gastrointestinal tract hemorrhage we evaluated. The most common symptoms were hematemesis (92%) and retching (61%). A history of chronic alcoholism was present in 69.5%, and recent binge drinking in 52.5% of our patients. Diagnosis was made endoscopically (55 patients) or surgically (four patients). Two deaths occurred in the 51 patients who were managed nonoperatively and two deaths occurred in the eight patients who underwent surgery. None of the deaths was …

Longitudinal Examination of Sexual (Re)victimization and Maturing Out of Problem Drinking from College to Adulthood.

The present study examined how young women's history of sexual victimization (SV) and revictimization affects the process of "maturing out" of heavy episodic drinking (HED) and drinking to cope (DTC) motivation from college to adulthood. Data were from a longitudinal burst study of college students at a northeastern university. Female students were surveyed in Wave 1 (college; N = 583, Mage = 19.1), Wave 2 (post-college; n = 507, Mage = 24.5), and Wave 3 (adulthood; n = 429, Mage = 30.8). SV history, HED, and DTC were assessed at each wave, with drinking outcomes measured daily during a 30-day

Transcriptome Analysis of Hippocampus After Weekly Binge Alcohol Exposure and Voluntary Exercise in Rats.

BACKGROUND: Binge alcohol exposure is associated with neurodegeneration in corticolimbic regions in both humans and animal models. We have previously shown that exercise limits hippocampal damage and neuroimmune activation in rats. Here we conducted a transcriptome analysis in order to elucidate genetic mechanisms underlying the protective influence of exercise on the binged hippocampus. METHODS: Male and female rats were gavaged once weekly for 5 weeks with 5 g/kg ethanol or isocaloric control solution. Half of the animals had access to running wheels 4 days/week. All animals were euthanized

Impact of acute binge-like ethanol exposure during the third-trimester equivalent on subicular interneurons in mice.

Background: In animal models, third-trimester-equivalent acute alcohol exposure (TTAAE) leads to cell death in the subiculum, a hippocampal region critical for long-term memory. Proximal and distal regions of the dorsal subiculum have projections that contribute to different aspects of cognitive processing. GABAergic interneurons regulate excitatory pyramidal neurons in the subiculum, but the long-term effects of TTAAE on these interneurons remain unclear. Objective: To test the hypothesis that TTAAE triggers apoptotic pathways in dorsal subiculum interneurons, leading to a persistent reduction

Effect of smartphone breathalyzer feedback on willingness to drive in moderately intoxicated individuals: A randomized trial.

OBJECTIVE: The present study examined the impact of smartphone breathalyzer feedback on individuals' decisions to drive when they are moderately intoxicated. Although the legal driving limit for blood alcohol concentration (BAC) in the United States is < 0.08%, crash risk begins to increase at moderate BACs ≥ 0.04%. METHOD: We conducted a laboratory-based, randomized controlled trial in 20 adult drivers aged 21-39 with a history of binge drinking. Participants were given sex- and weight-based doses of alcohol over 90 min with a target peak BAC of 0.10%. Smartphone breathalyzer measurements we…

Evidence for a unique association between fronto-cortical glycine levels and recent heavy drinking in treatment naïve individuals with alcohol use disorder.

Although the neurotransmitters/modulators glutamate and, more recently, glycine have been implicated in the development and maintenance of Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) in preclinical research, human proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) studies have focused solely on the measurement of glutamate. The purpose of the present analysis was to examine the relative associations of brain glutamate and glycine levels with recent heavy drinking in 41 treatment naïve individuals with AUD using 1H-MRS. The present study is the first that we are aware of to report in vivo brain glycine levels from

Effects of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE): insights into FASD using mouse models of PAE.

The potential impact of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) varies considerably among exposed individuals, with some displaying serious alcohol-related effects and many others showing few or no overt signs of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). In animal models, variables such as nutrition, genetic background, health, other drugs, and stress, as well as dosage, duration, and gestational timing of exposure to alcohol can all be controlled in a way that is not possible in a clinical situation. In this review we examine mouse models of PAE and focus on those with demonstrated craniofacial malform

Effects of one- and three-day binge alcohol exposure in neonatal C57BL/6 mice on spatial learning and memory in adolescence and adulthood.

Binge-like alcohol exposure during the early postnatal period in rats and mice causes deficits in spatial learning and memory that persist into adulthood. Wozniak et al. (2004) reported that heavy binge alcohol exposure on postnatal day 7 (PD 7) in C57BL/6 (B6) mice produced profound spatial learning deficits in the Morris water maze when tested in adolescence (P30-39); when tested in adulthood, however, the deficits were greatly attenuated. Using a similar PD 7 binge alcohol exposure paradigm in B6 mice, we tested whether a single-day (PD 7 only) alcohol treatment produced place learning defi

The Protective Impact of Social Support on the Cascade Rates Between Internalizing Problems and Alcohol Misuse in Adolescence.

PURPOSE: Alcohol misuse (i.e., frequent, heavy drinking) and internalizing problems (i.e., anxiety, depression) typically manifest in adolescence. Both follow cascading trajectories where presence of one confers risk for the other. Delaying or preventing the cascade allows more time and opportunity to address symptoms before consequences accumulate and disrupt development. One candidate moderator for their cascading trajectories is social support, which is independently negatively associated with both alcohol misuse and internalizing problems. We tested whether social support affects bidirecti
