Evolution of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and titanium interbody devices for spinal procedures: a comprehensive review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Interbody fusion is commonly utilized for arthrodesis and stability among patients undergoing spine surgery. Over the last few decades, interbody device materials, such as titanium and polyetheretherketone (PEEK), have been replacing traditional autografts and allografts for interbody fusion. As such, with the exponential growth of bioengineering, a large variety cage surface technologies exist. Different combinations of cage component materials and surface modifications have been created to optimize interbody constructs for surgical use. This review aims to provide a comprehensi

Is there any biomaterial substitute for peri-implant soft tissue phenotype modification? A network meta-analysis of the appraisal literature.

Evidence shows that an increased width and thickness of the keratinized mucosa favours peri-implant health. The aim of this network meta-analysis was to compare the clinical effects of alternative biomaterials for peri-implant soft tissue phenotype modification (PSPM) in patients with dental implants when compared to autologous tissue grafts. An electronic search without language or date limitations was performed in four databases and the grey literature for articles published until November 2020. The eligibility criteria included randomized clinical trials (RCTs) evaluating the clinical outco

Graphene-based materials: the key for the successful application of pHEMA as a blood-contacting device.

Thrombosis and infection are the leading causes of blood-contacting device (BCD) failure, mainly due to the poor performance of existing biomaterials. Poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (pHEMA) has excellent hemocompatibility but the weak mechanical properties impair its use as a bulk material for BCD. As such, pHEMA has been explored as a coating, despite the instability and difficulty of attachment to the underlying polymer compromise its success. This work describes the hydrogel composites made of pHEMA and graphene-based materials (GBM) that meet the biological and mechanical requirements f

Extracellular matrix-based biomaterials for cardiac regeneration and repair.

The spectrum of ischemic heart diseases, encompassing acute myocardial infarction to heart failure, represents the leading cause of death worldwide. Although extensive progress in cardiovascular diagnoses and therapy has been made, the prevalence of the disease continues to increase. Cardiac regeneration has a promising perspective for the therapy of heart failure. Recently, extracellular matrix (ECM) has been shown to play an important role in cardiac regeneration and repair after cardiac injury. There is also evidence that the ECM could be directly used as a drug to promote cardiomyocyte pro

Bio-Conductive Polymers for Treating Myocardial Conductive Defects: Long-Term Efficacy Study.

Following myocardial infarction (MI), the resulting fibrotic scar is nonconductive and leads to ventricular dysfunction via electrical uncoupling of the remaining viable cardiomyocytes. The uneven conductive properties between normal myocardium and scar tissue result in arrhythmia, yielding sudden cardiac death/heart failure. A conductive biopolymer, poly-3-amino-4-methoxybenzoic acid-gelatin (PAMB-G), is able to resynchronize myocardial contractions in vivo. Intravenous PAMB-G injections into mice show that it does not cause any acute toxicity, up to the maximum tolerated dose (1.6 mL kg-1 ),

Preparation of bioplastic using soy protein.

Soybean, one of the most abundant plants, has been cultivated around the world as a familiar crop. Especially, most of the soybean is globally used as a crop to obtain the oil. The degreased soybean contains a lot of protein in it. The part of the degreased soybean is used for the food of human consumption and livestock feed, however most of this are discarded as industrial waste throughout the world. Therefore, we demonstrated the preparation of bioplastics consisting of soy protein. Although the soy protein without the cross-linking reaction by formaldehyde (HCHO) was collapsed in water, bio

Chitin-Based Double-Network Hydrogel as Potential Superficial Soft-Tissue-Repairing Materials.

Chitin is a biopolymer, which has been proven to be a biomedical material candidate, yet the weak mechanical properties seriously limit their potentials. In this work, a chitin-based double-network (DN) hydrogel has been designed as a potential superficial repairing material. The hydrogel was synthesized through a double-network (DN) strategy composing hybrid regenerated chitin nanofiber (RCN)-poly (ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether) (PEGDE) as the first network and polyacrylamide (PAAm) as the second network. The hybrid RCN-PEGDE/PAAm DN hydrogel was strong and tough, possessing Young's modulu

Development and application of a 3D periodontal in vitro model for the evaluation of fibrillar biomaterials.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammation of the tooth supporting structures that finally can lead to tooth loss. As chronic periodontitis is associated with systemic diseases multiple approaches have been followed to support regeneration of the destructed tissue. But very few materials are actually used in the clinic. A new and promising group of biomaterials with advantageous biomechanical properties that have the ability to support periodontal regeneration are self-assembling peptides (SAP). However, there is still a lack of 3D periodontal models that can evaluate the migration po

[Advances on the study of movable artificial vertebral body].

At present, artificial vertebral implants have proven to be effective in the treatment of spinal tumors, infections, fractures and other diseases. However, the fusion artificial vertebral body can cause adjacent intervertebral joint degeneration and loss of original physiological curvature and activity. The movable artificial vertebral body can, to some extent, restore the normal physiological movement and reduce biomechanical changes of the spine, reducing the occurrence of complication. The design of movable artificial vertebral body is to equip movable device when the basis of reliable stab

Electrospun fibroin/polyurethane hybrid meshes: Manufacturing, characterization, and potentialities as substrates for haemodialysis arteriovenous grafts.

Several attempts made so far to combine silk fibroin and polyurethane, in order to prepare scaffolds encompassing the bioactivity of the former with the elasticity of the latter, suffer from critical drawbacks concerning industrial and clinical applicability (e.g., separation of phases upon processing, use of solvents unaddressed by the European Pharmacopoeia, and use of degradable polyurethanes). Overcoming these limitations, in this study, we report the successful blending of regenerated silk fibroin with a medical-grade, non-degradable polyurethane using formic acid and dichloromethane, and

Enhanced Osseointegration of Hierarchically Structured Ti Implant with Electrically Bioactive SnO2-TiO2 Bilayered Surface.

The poor osseointegration of Ti implant significantly compromise its application in load-bearing bone repair and replacement. Electrically bioactive coating inspirited from heterojunction on Ti implant can benefit osseointegration but cannot avoid the stress shielding effect between bone and implant. To resolve this conflict, hierarchically structured Ti implant with electrically bioactive SnO2-TiO2 bilayered surface has been developed to enhance osseointegration. Benefiting from the electric cue offered by the built-in electrical field of SnO2-TiO2 heterojunction and the topographic cue provi

Three-Dimensional Models of the Human Brain Development and Diseases.

Deciphering the human brain pathophysiology remains one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century. Neurological disorders represent a significant proportion of diseases burden; however, the complexity of the brain physiology makes it challenging to model its diseases. Simple in vitro models have been very useful for precise measurements in controled conditions. However, existing models are limited in their ability to replicate complex interactions between various cells in the brain. Studying human brain requires sophisticated models to reconstitute the tangled architecture and functions o

Design and fabrication of porous biodegradable scaffolds: a strategy for tissue engineering.

Current strategies of tissue engineering are focused on the reconstruction and regeneration of damaged or deformed tissues by grafting of cells with scaffolds and biomolecules. Recently, much interest is given to scaffolds which are based on mimic the extracellular matrix that have induced the formation of new tissues. To return functionality of the organ, the presence of a scaffold is essential as a matrix for cell colonization, migration, growth, differentiation and extracellular matrix deposition, until the tissues are totally restored or regenerated. A wide variety of approaches has been d
