A model of porcine polymicrobial septic shock.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection. Mortality of patients with sepsis is high and largely unchanged throughout the past decades. Animal models have been widely used for the study of sepsis and septic shock, but translation into effective treatment regimes in the clinic have mostly failed. Pigs are considered as suitable research models for human diseases due to their high comparability and similarity to human anatomy, genetics, and the immune system. We here evaluated the previously reported models of septic shock in p

Feasibility and limitations of bulk density assignment in MRI for head and neck IMRT treatment planning.

Head and neck cancers centered at the base of skull are better visualized on MRI than on CT. The purpose of this investigation was to investigate the accuracy of bulk density assignment in head and neck intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) treatment plan optimization. Our study investigates dose calculation differences between density-assigned MRI and CT, and identifies potential limitations related to dental implants and MRI geometrical distortion in the framework of MRI-only-based treatment planning. Bulk density assignment was performed and applied onto MRI to generate three MRI ima

Brain macrophages: on the role of pericytes and perivascular cells.

Pericytes are a unique cell group intimately associated with the vasculature and that appear to be present in most tissues. Their presence is generally considered to be restricted to the microvessels - arterioles, venules and particularly capillaries, where there is little or no smooth muscle. Morphologically, the pericytes exhibit a small, oval cell body with multiple processes extending for some distance along the vessel axis; these primary processes then give rise to orthogonal secondary branches which encircle the vascular wall. Through this morphology and their close association with the

Comments on "Breast Volume Measurements and Objectivations for Determination of Symmetry: A Retrospective Study in a Large Study Population".

Killaars et al. investigated the relationship between subjective breast symmetry assessment and objective three-dimensional (3D) volumetric measurements, providing valuable insights into aesthetic breast evaluation. However, several methodological limitations merit consideration. Although inter-observer agreement was reported, intra-observer reliability was not assessed, limiting evaluation of the consistency and reproducibility of subjective ratings. Furthermore, the study used breast volume difference as the objective reference standard despite breast symmetry being a multidimensional concep

Correlation of size specific dose estimates with organ dose in abdominal spectral computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: In abdominal spectral Computed Tomography (CT), organ dose assessment is important for radiation safety but remains challenging due to the complexity of Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare the correlations of three size-specific dose estimate (SSDE) metrics (including the central slice SSDEcenter, the mean of all slices SSDEmean, and the organ-specific SSDEorgan) with organ doses and to establish a rapid estimation method for organ dose using linear regression in abdominal spectral CT. METHODS: Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP6) was used to model the Ge

Simulation-free spine palliative radiotherapy enabled by AI-adapted diagnostic CT.

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy planning traditionally requires a dedicated simulation CT (sCT), which can introduce delays in initiating treatment. This is particularly impactful in spinal palliative care, where timely treatment is often important for symptom control and prevention of neurological deterioration. Although diagnostic CT (dCT) is frequently available earlier in the workflow, it can lead to geometric and dosimetric inaccuracies when used directly for treatment planning due to discrepancies in patient positioning, vertebral alignment, and table curvature. PURPOSE: To develop and evaluat

CT-Based Three-Dimensional Volumetric Analysis of Posterior and Lateral Malleolar Fragments in SER-Type Trimalleolar Ankle Fractures: Correlation and Reproducibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Posterior malleolar fractures are commonly assessed using two-dimensional measurements and morphology-based classification systems. However, ankle fracture morphology is inherently three-dimensional, and the reproducibility of CT-based volumetric segmentation for malleolar fracture fragments has not been sufficiently established. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between lateral and posterior malleolar fragment volumes in homogeneous supination-external rotation (SER)-type trimalleolar ankle fractures and to assess the intraobserver and interobserver reprod

Primary extraovarian adult granulosa cell tumor of the greater omentum: a case report and literature review.

Extraovarian adult granulosa cell tumors are rare. The diagnosis of extraovarian adult granulosa cell tumors is challenging. Here we presented a case of extraovarian adult granulosa cell tumor originating in the greater omentum. Along with a review of the literature, we aim to summarizes its clinicopathological features to enhance recognition of this tumor. A 55-year-old female patient presented with dull abdominal pain for 3 days. Abdominal CT revealed a soft tissue density mass in the right lower abdomen, measuring 9.0 × 6.3 × 6.0 cm. The mass demonstrated an regular contour and indistinct b

Impact of eFOV CT distortion on surface-guided radiotherapy registration: Phantom-based analysis.

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the impact of extended field-of-view (eFOV) CT distortion on the alignment accuracy of surface-guided radiation therapy (SGRT) using CT-based reference surfaces, and examined the influence of beam center location. METHODS: An anthropomorphic phantom, segmented into chest, abdomen, and pelvis, was scanned at the center position (sFOV) and at four off-center positions. The center corresponds to the CT bore isocenter, while the off-center positions were obtained by placing the phantom boundary 315 mm or 390 mm to the left or right of the CT isocenter to simulate eFO

Intrafractional Motion in Online-Adaptive Magnetic Resonance-Guided Radiotherapy of Adrenal Metastases Leads to Reduced Target Volume Coverage and Elevated Organ-at-Risk Doses.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Stereotactic body radiotherapy is frequently used in patients with adrenal metastases. Motion of adherent radiosensitive organs at risk (OARs) and tumors influence OAR toxicity and tumor control. Online-adaptive Magnetic Resonance-guided radiotherapy (MRgRT) can address and mitigate interfractional changes. However, the impact of intrafractional variations in adrenal MRgRT is unknown. METHODS: A total of 23 patients with 24 adrenal metastases were treated with MRgRT. After daily plan adaptation and before beam application, an additional (preRT) 3d MRI was acquired. PreR

Current benchtop protocols are not appropriate for the evaluation of distraction-based growing rods: a literature review to justify a new protocol and its development.

PURPOSE: Although distraction-based growing rods (GR) are the gold standard for the treatment of early onset scoliosis, they suffer from high failure rates. We have (1) performed a literature search to understand the deficiencies of the current protocols, (2) in vitro evaluation of GRs using our proposed protocol and performed a finite element (FE) model validation, and (3) identified key features which should be considered in mechanical testing setups. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases were searched for articles published on (a) in vivo animal, in vitro cadaveric, and bio

Three-dimensional MRI-based treatment planning approach for non-invasive ocular proton therapy.

PURPOSE: To develop a high-resolution three-dimensional (3D) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based treatment planning approach for uveal melanomas (UM) in proton therapy. MATERIALS/METHODS: For eight patients with UM, a segmentation of the gross tumor volume (GTV) and organs-at-risk (OARs) was performed on T1- and T2-weighted 7 Tesla MRI image data to reconstruct the patient MR-eye. An extended contour was defined with a 2.5-mm isotropic margin derived from the GTV. A broad beam algorithm, which we have called πDose, was implemented to calculate relative proton absorbed doses to the ipsilate

Retained metal fragments following esophageal button battery impaction.

Button battery (BB) impaction in the esophagus requires immediate endoscopic removal and meticulous follow-up, including serial cross-sectional imaging, preferably with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, BBs quickly degrade in the esophagus, and metallic fragments may remain in the injured mucosa following removal. This metallic debris can cause thermal injury during MRI, potentially aggravating local injury. We aimed to explore whether such metallic fragments could be identified on imaging following BB removal. In this study, we conducted a retrospective review of children (0-18 years

Prone whole-breast irradiation using three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy in women undergoing breast conservation for early disease yields high rates of excellent to good cosmetic outcomes in patients with large and/or pendulous breasts.

PURPOSE: To report our institution's experience using prone positioning for three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) to deliver post-lumpectomy whole breast irradiation (WBI) in a cohort of women with large and/or pendulous breasts, to determine the rate of acute and late toxicities and, more specifically, cosmetic outcomes. We hypothesized that using 3D-CRT for WBI in the prone position would reduce or eliminate patient and breast size as negative prognostic indicators for toxicities associated with WBI. METHODS AND MATERIALS: From 1998 to 2006, 110 cases were treated with prone WBI
