BACKGROUND: Ruptures of the patellar tendon are rare injuries. Surgical treatment for this injury is mandatory.
HYPOTHESIS: Gap formation does not differ between the three patellar tendon repair techniques.
STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study.
METHODS: Twelve fresh-frozen cadaveric knees were used to compare three techniques of patellar tendon repairs. The standard suture repair used two Krackow sutures placed in the avulsed patellar tendon, passed through transpatellar drill holes, and secured with the knee in 30 degrees of flexion. In the second group, suture repair was augmented wi…

INTRODUCTION: Achieving tension-free flap closure is a critical challenge in vertical ridge augmentation of the anterior maxilla, where anatomical constraints limit flap mobility and soft tissue advancement. This study compares the split-thickness flap (control) and sub-orbicularis full-thickness flap (test) in cadaveric models to evaluate their impact on soft tissue thickness, flap integrity following periosteal release, and mucogingival junction (MGJ) displacement. The goal is to characterize and optimize surgical approaches for vertical bone augmentation in the anterior maxilla.

BACKGROUND: Recovery of shoulder external rotation after upper brachial plexus injury remains limited. This study investigated the anatomical feasibility of selective neurotizations using radial nerve branches to the triceps brachii as donors for the motor branches to the infraspinatus (bIS) and teres minor (bTm) muscles, aiming to enhance external rotation outcomes.
METHODS: Twenty fresh adult cadavers underwent posterior dissections to expose the suprascapular, axillary, and radial nerves. Radial nerve branches to the triceps were identified, measured, and mobilized to simulate transfers to…

INTRODUCTION: The duodeno-pancreatic region is a highly vascularized area. The superior and posterior pancreaticoduodenal artery is a vessel primarily originating from the gastroduodenal artery. It exhibits rare anatomical variations, such as its emergence from the right branch of the hepatic artery, which we fortuitously identified during a cadaver dissection.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The body studied in this dissection was from cadavers donated to science at the Anatomy Laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine in Amiens. This dissection was part of a Master's project aimed at studying the branch…

Background Silicone dye injection is a well-described technique for studying vascular anatomy. Plastic surgeons routinely participate in cadaveric workshops and are involved in the preparation of vascular-labeled cadavers. However, sparse literature is available on dye studies of extracranial head and neck vessels, even with anatomists, and the preparation of these cadavers is a daunting task. Materials and Methods In this study, we describe a straightforward technique of silicone dye injection for extracranial head and neck vasculature and its application for filler injection training and o…

Published cerebrovascular injection techniques have mostly used decapitated, fresh cadavers or heads embalmed with 10% formaldehyde. There have been no reports using vascular-injected cadavers for head and neck surgical training models or using vascular injections in saturated salt method-embalmed cadavers. Thus, we performed vascular labeling of five saturated salt method-embalmed cadavers without decapitation. Latex mixed with red ink was injected into the common carotid artery via a 3D-printed vascular adapter. The injection force was provided by a peristaltic pump. Thyroidectomy, submandib…

OBJECTIVES: Anterior communicating artery (ACoA) aneurysm is one of the most common intracranial aneurysms, and it is also the aneurysm with the highest rupture rate. With the improvement of endoscopic techniques, it is possible to use an endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) to clip ACoA aneurysms. For further analysis of the EEA for clipping ACoA aneurysms, we used cadaver heads and three-dimensional (3D)-printed models to finish the anatomical study, and we finally selected 1 clinical case to complete the clipping through the EEA.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We first collected 3 cadaver heads to …

BACKGROUND: Chest compressions and ventilation are lifesaving tasks during cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Besides oxygenation, endotracheal intubation (ETI) during CPR is performed to avoid aspiration of gastric contents. If intubation is difficult or impossible, supraglottic airway devices are utilized. We tested six different airway devices regarding their potential to protect against regurgitation and aspiration during CPR in a randomized experimental human cadaver study.
METHODS: Five-hundred ml of 0.01% methylene-blue-solution were instilled into the stomach of 30 adult human cada…

UNLABELLED: Latissimus dorsi tendon transfer is a surgical option for treating irreparable posterosuperior rotator cuff tears, notably when attempting to reconstruct active external rotation. We hypothesized that the positioning of the transfer's point of fixation would differ depending on the desired elbow-to-body external rotation or external rotation with the elbow abducted.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seven shoulders from four whole frozen cadavers were used. We created two systems to install the subject in a semi-seated position to allow external rotation elbow to body and the arm abducted 90°…

The indications for laparoscopic retroperitoneal surgery have recently been greatly extended and the technique has become popular, but concomitant pleural injury or pneumothorax has been reported from numerous hospitals in Japan. Which anatomical information is useful to avoid surgical injury of the suggested weak portion of the diaphragm? We identified a diaphragm-free triangular area or Bochdalek's triangle in 90.1% of elderly Japanese cadavers (100/111 cadavers), comprising about 622.8 mm(2) in area (height 47.9 mm, base 25.0 mm). In most cases (80.1%; 129/161), the entire triangle was rest…
