Oesophageal foreign bodies in cats: Clinical and anatomic findings.

BACKGROUND: Anatomical feline models can aid in understanding the relationships between clinical findings and anatomical features and the course of foreign bodies passing through the oesophagus. This study has two goals 1) to assess feline oesophageal foreign bodies in feline patients using physical, radiologic and endoscopic examination and, how their location influences treatment plans and complications. 2) How the anatomical sharp angle of the oesophagus contribute to foreign body lodgement. Thirty-five cats were enrolled in this study; 30 of them were clinically ill, and five cats were use…

Typhlitis Associated With Natural Trichuris sp. Infection in Cats.

Trichuris spp. infections can cause typhlitis or typhlocolitis in many species, but there are no published studies about its pathology in cats. Trichuris sp. infection in cats appears to be rare in most parts of the world but is frequent in some tropical and subtropical regions. The purpose of this study was to describe intestinal lesions associated with natural Trichuris sp. infections in cats of St. Kitts, West Indies. Comprehensive autopsies, histopathological assessment of small and large intestine, and total worm counts were performed in a cross-sectional study of 30 consecutive feline mo…

Dystrophic mineralisation in chronic exogenous lipid pneumonia in cats.

CASE SERIES SUMMARY: Exogenous lipid pneumonia with mineralisation of the lung parenchyma was diagnosed in three cats with radiographs, CT and/or bronchoalveolar lavage cytological findings. All three cats had a common clinical history of chronic constipation and long-term forced oral administration of mineral oil. All three cases showed radiographic findings compatible with aspiration pneumonia, with an alveolar pattern in the ventral part of the middle and/or cranial lung lobes. Minor improvement of the radiographic lung pattern in the follow-up studies was seen in two cats, and a miliary 's…

Molecular detection of Pneumocystis in the lungs of cats.

The genus Pneumocystis comprises potential pathogens that reside normally in the lungs of a wide range of mammals. Although they generally behave as transient or permanent commensals, they can occasionally cause life-threatening pneumonia (Pneumocystis pneumonia; PCP) in immunosuppressed individuals. Several decades ago, the presence of Pneumocystis morphotypes (trophic forms and cysts) was described in the lungs of normal cats and cats with experimentally induced symptomatic PCP (after immunosuppression by corticosteroids); yet to date spontaneous or drug-induced PCP has not been described in…

Updates on practical ABC blood compatibility testing in cats.

In feline practice, blood groups were considered unimportant until the 1980s. Since then much has been learned. The most important blood group system in cats is the AB (renamed here as ABC) blood group system consisting of blood types A, B and AB (better referred to as C). Type B cats have strong anti-A alloantibodies potentially leading to incompatibility reactions during A-B mismatched transfusions or neonatal isoerythrolysis (NI) in type A and C (AB) kittens born to type B queens. Acute hemolytic transfusion reactions as well as NI have been clinically well documented in cats. Immunological…

Cats as a reservoir of Bartonella henselae for dogs.

Bartonellosis is a disease affecting a variety of animals. Many Bartonella infections are zoonotic, including cat scratch disease. Within the genus Bartonella are 45 species, of which more than 10 can infect cats and dogs. Companion animals serve as reservoirs for several zoonotic species of Bartonella, and may also serve as sentinels for zoonotic Bartonella species harbored by wildlife. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of the occurrence of Bartonella spp. DNA in dogs from households where cats with clinical bartonellosis were kept. The presence of DNA with 99-100% complian…

Histologic identification of intraocular Cytauxzoon felis in three cats.

CASE SERIES SUMMARY: A 5-month-old male intact domestic shorthair (DSH) cat (cat 1), a 1-year-old male neutered DSH cat (cat 2) and a 1.5-year-old female spayed DSH cat (cat 3) were submitted for gross necropsy after acute death, with the clinical suspicion of cytauxzoonosis. All three cats displayed signs of rapidly progressive clinical deterioration, including lethargy, anorexia, and hyper- or hypothermia. Cat 1 was euthanized owing to the grave prognosis for survival, whereas cats 2 and 3 were found dead 1-4 days after the onset of clinical signs. Remains were submitted to the Kansas State …

Long-term survival in six cats with mediastinal cysts.

CASE SERIES SUMMARY: Mediastinal cysts were diagnosed as incidental findings in six cats evaluated for non-thoracic disease, including staging for historical bladder leiomyosarcoma, flea dermatitis and hairballs, and hyperthyroidism. Radiographically, the cysts appeared as soft tissue opacities cranial to the heart. Ultrasound revealed the masses to be thin-walled, single lumen, anechoic, fluid-filled structures. One cat also had thoracic and abdominal CT performed for cancer staging; the CT revealed a well-defined, fluid-attenuating mass without peripheral contrast enhancement in the cranial …

Evaluation of Transdermal Administration of Phenobarbital in Healthy Cats.

The purpose was to determine the safety and achievable serum concentrations of transdermally administered phenobarbital in healthy cats. The hypothesis was that transdermal phenobarbital would achieve therapeutic serum concentrations (15-45 µg/mL) with minimal short-term adverse effects. Enrolled cats had normal physical and neurologic exams and unremarkable bloodwork. Transdermal phenobarbital in a pluronic lecithin organogel-based vehicle was administered at a dosage of 3.0-3.1 mg/kg per ear pinna (total of 6.0-6.2 mg/kg) every 12 hr for 14 days. Serum phenobarbital concentrations were measu…

Dosage escalation of intravenous cyclophosphamide in cats with cancer.

Cyclophosphamide is an alkylating agent used as chemotherapy for cats with lymphoma, carcinomas and sarcomas. Clinical and pharmacokinetic studies of cyclophosphamide in normal and tumor-bearing cats have shown minimal toxicity and cyclophosphamide at clinically used dosages rarely requires dosage adjustment or treatment delays. Dose intensity appears important for treatment of most cancers; the aim of this study was to perform a modified dose escalation study of cyclophosphamide to establish the maximally tolerated dosage (MTD) for intravenous cyclophosphamide in cats. The dose limiting toxic…

Acute pain in cats: Recent advances in clinical assessment.

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: Pain assessment has gained much attention in recent years as a means of improving pain management and treatment standards. It has become an elemental part of feline practice with ultimate benefit to feline health and welfare. Currently pain assessment involves mostly the investigation of sensory-discriminative (intensity, location and duration) and affective-motivational (emotional) domains of pain. Specific behaviors associated with acute pain have been identified and constitute the basis for its assessment in cats. RECENT ADVANCES: The publication of pain scales with re…

Update on flea and tick associated diseases of cats.

There are multiple vector-borne diseases in cats, the most prominent being those transmitted by mosquitos, sand flies, fleas, and ticks. Many of the agents vectored by fleas or ticks have been grown or amplified from blood or have induced antibodies in the serum of normal cats or those with clinical signs like fever and will be the focus of this manuscript. As high as 80% of fleas collected from cats contain at least one organism that could induce illness in cats or people. Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Bartonella spp., Borrelia spp., Ehrlichia spp., hemoplasmas, and Rickettsia spp. infect cats a…

Bartonella infections in cats and dogs including zoonotic aspects.

Bartonellosis is a vector-borne zoonotic disease with worldwide distribution that can infect humans and a large number of mammals including small companion animals (cats and dogs). In recent years, an increasing number of studies from around the world have reported Bartonella infections, although publications have predominantly focused on the North American perspective. Currently, clinico-pathological data from Europe are more limited, suggesting that bartonellosis may be an infrequent or underdiagnosed infectious disease in cats and dogs. Research is needed to confirm or exclude Bartonella in…
