We describe here the first documented case in Austria of the cattle ear mite Raillietia auris in a four-year-old dairy cow. The cow was mildly depressed, and keratoconjunctivitis was diagnosed in both eyes with Horner's syndrome in the left eye. The animal showed a mild head tilt to the left and a generalized ataxia with a tendency to move to the right side, which became exacerbated if the animal was blind-folded. A Babesia species has been identified and shown to be transmitted by Hyalomma anatolicum anatolicum in China. When larvae, nymphs and adults developed from engorged females H. a. anatolicum collected from cattle in Xinjiang province were infested onto the Babesia-free calves, piroplasms of Babesia sp. were seen in blood smears from cattle infested with nymphs (2 calves), but not from the calves infested with larvae (1 calf or adult ticks (2 calves). This Babesia sp. proved to be of low virulence, causing 3% parasites which lasted 3-4 days.

Copper (Cu) is an essential trace element. Depletion of liver-Cu stores leads to clinical or sub-clinical Cu deficiency. Our objective was to evaluate plasma-Cu levels as a diagnostic test for the assessment of Cu status in cattle. We used liver-Cu levels as the gold standard. Estrus detection efficacy and heat detection protocol were studied by means of a field study carried out on 878 lactating beef cows in 60 French herds. An automated heatmount detection system was employed to detect estrus for artificial insemination in 57 beef cows. First service conception rate was 84.2% and the pregnancy rate was 89.5% for a 42-day breeding season. Three outbreaks of Xanthium cavanillesii intoxication occurred in the spring in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. All outbreaks were observed in paddocks with sandy soils in flood plains along water streams.
