Multicentric malignant lymphoma in a pallid bat.

A 2.5-year-old, female pallid bat (Antrozous pallidus) was captured in Oregon (USA) in 1990 and later died in 1992. At the time of death, abdominal distension due to ascites, splenomegaly, and hepatomegaly, and a cheek mass were noted. Based on histologic examination of these tissues, a diagnosis of multicentric lymphoma was made. Retroviral particles were not found on electron microscopic examination.

Serologic survey of neotropical bats in Guatemala for virus antibodies.

Neotropical bats were collected from different life zones in Guatemala in 1983 and 1984 to determine the presence and distribution of antibody against 10 viruses. Bats were collected with mist nets at 13 sites in eight departments and 332 serum specimens were obtained for testing for neutralizing (N) antibody by the plaque-reduction neutralization test. Eighty-seven (26%) of the 332 bats from 16 (38%) of 42 bat species sampled were serologically positive for five of six arboviruses and for two other viruses tested. Antibodies against Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE) variant I-A/B, eastern

Projections of physiologically defined subdivisions of the inferior colliculus in the mustached bat: targets in the medial geniculate body and extrathalamic nuclei.

This study examined the output of the central nucleus of the inferior colliculus to the medial geniculate body and other parts of the nervous system in the mustached bat (Pteronotus parnellii). Small deposits of anterograde tracers (horseradish peroxidase, [3H]leucine, Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin, wheat germ agglutinin conjugated to horseradish peroxidase, or biocytin) were made at physiologically defined sites in the central nucleus representing major components of the bat's echolocation signal. The topography, frequency specificity, and axonal morphology of these outputs were studied.

Passive sound localization of prey by the pallid bat (Antrozous p. pallidus).

The pallid bat (Antrozous p. pallidus) uses passive sound localization to capture terrestrial prey. This study of captive pallid bats examined the roles of echolocation and passive sound localization in prey capture, and focused on their spectral requirements for accurate passive sound localization. Crickets were used as prey throughout these studies. All tests were conducted in dim, red light in an effort to preclude the use of vision. Hunting performance did not differ significantly in red light and total darkness, nor did it differ when visual contrast between the terrestrial prey and the s

In-flight brainstem responses highlight the encoding of self-emitted echolocation calls in bats.

Echolocating bats rely on precise auditory processing to navigate and forage in complete darkness. A critical aspect of this behaviour is the neural encoding of self-generated vocalizations, which allows for accurate comparison with returning echoes. In this study, we introduce a non-invasive method for recording auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) in awake, flying big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus). Using a custom 3D-printed harness that enables sustained in-place flight, we simultaneously recorded electroencephalographic and acoustic signals from freely vocalizing animals. Self-emitted echolo

Genome-Wide Association Reveals Signalling-Linked Infection Tolerance in Hibernating Bats.

Hibernation profoundly alters host-pathogen dynamics by suppressing metabolism and immune function, posing unique challenges for infection control. In this study, we examined how genomic variation modulates infection and physiological traits in temperate bats during hibernation. We combined infection screening, haematology, blood biochemistry, and whole-genome sequencing across five vespertilionid species, identifying over 170,000 single nucleotide variants (SNVs) and assessing their associations with 23 health-related variables. Using the phylogenetically informed treeWAS framework, we detect

Integrated molecular and metatranscriptomic evidence of Tacaribe virus and the brain virome profile of Molossus molossus bat sampled in Brazil.

UNLABELLED: Tacaribe virus (TCRV), a New World arenavirus, is associated with neotropical frugivorous bats, particularly Artibeus spp., and is considered to have zoonotic potential. Here, we report the detection of TCRV in multiple biological compartments of a Molossus molossus (velvety free-tailed bat), an insectivorous species commonly found in Brazilian urban ecosystems. Brain tissues negative for rabies were subjected to high-throughput RNA sequencing, revealing a diverse array of viral taxa, including partial L and S segments of TCRV with respective genome coverages of 68.2% and 65.6%. Virome Analysis of Small Mammals from the Brazilian Amazon.

The municipalities of Peixe-Boi and Santa Bárbara do Pará, both in the Pará State (eastern Amazon), have more than half of their territory deforested. Understanding the viral diversity in wildlife that inhabits the surroundings of human communities contributes to strengthening surveillance. Samples from eleven bats, seven opossums, and eight rodents from the two locations were screened by high-throughput sequencing for virome analysis. Viral reads were assigned into twenty viral families, from which the most abundant was Retroviridae. Host order, tissue type, and season showed a significant ef

A comparative analysis of the dendritic cell response upon exposure to different rabies virus strains.

Rabies is a viral zoonotic disease that causes over 60,000 human deaths annually worldwide. Natural infections lack a virus-specific immune response, leading to a near 100% fatality rate unless immediately treated. Rabies virus (RABV) is typically transmitted through bites from rabid dogs or other carnivores to humans and may initially interact with innate immune cells such as dendritic cells at the site of infection. This study investigates the in vitro response of human monocyte-derived dendritic cells (moDCs) exposed to two pathogenic RABV strains-silver-haired bat rabies virus (SHBRV) and

Bartonella spp., Coxiella burnetii and Rickettsia rickettsii in urban bats: molecular investigation of neglected zoonoses in Brazil.

In the last decade, cases of bartonellosis, Q fever and Brazilian spotted fever have been recorded in Brazil. Despite this, their occurrence is still underestimated. This study aimed to investigate Bartonella spp., Coxiella burnetii and Rickettsia rickettsii DNA in organs of urban bats collected from the São Paulo state, southeastern Brazil. Spleen and liver samples were collected from 102 bats from urban areas and evaluated by real-time PCR. Positive samples were submitted to conventional PCR and subsequent sequencing for species identification. In total, 3.9% of the bats were positive for Ba

Prevalence and Genetic Diversity of Bat Hepatitis B Viruses in Bat Species Living in Gabon.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection leads to around 800,000 deaths yearly and is considered to be a major public health problem worldwide. However, HBV origins remain poorly understood. Here, we looked for bat HBV (BtHBV) in different bat species in Gabon to investigate the role of these animals as carriers of ancestral hepadnaviruses because these viruses are much more diverse in bats than in other host species. DNA was extracted from 859 bat livers belonging to 11 species collected in caves and villages in the southeast of Gabon and analyzed using PCRs targeting the surface gene. Positive samp

Resistance to age-related hearing loss in the echolocating big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus).

Hearing mediates many behaviours critical for survival in echolocating bats, including foraging and navigation. Although most mammals are susceptible to progressive age-related hearing loss, the evolution of biosonar, which requires the ability to hear low-intensity echoes from outgoing sonar signals, may have selected against the development of hearing deficits in bats. Many echolocating bats exhibit exceptional longevity and rely on acoustic behaviours for survival to old age; however, relatively little is known about the ageing bat auditory system. In this study, we used DNA methylation to

RNA editing sites and triplet usage in exomes of bat RNA virus genomes of the family Paramyxoviridae.

Bats contain a diverse spectrum of viral species in their bodies. The RNA virus family Paramyxoviridae tends to infect several vertebrate species, which are accountable for a variety of devastating infections in both humans and animals. Viruses of this kind include measles, mumps, and Hendra. Some synonymous codons are favoured over others in mRNAs during gene-to-protein synthesis process. Such phenomenon is termed as codon usage bias (CUB). Our research emphasized many aspects that shape the CUB of genes in the Paramyxoviridae family found in bats. Here, the nitrogenous base A occurred the mo

Testicular regression and recrudescence in the bat Eptesicus furinalis: Morpho-physiological variations and hormonal signaling pathways.

Males of the bat Eptesicus furinalis show at least one process of testicular regression, in which the testes regress and temporarily interrupt the production of sperm, during its annual reproductive cycle. As the process of spermatogenesis is under hormonal control, mainly of pituitary and androgen hormones, our aim was to analyze the morphological variations and the hormonal control of the testes of E. furinalis during the four phases of its reproductive cycle. Testes of 18 adult males, divided into four sample groups (active, regressing, regressed, and recrudescence phases), were submitted t

Pangolin merbecovirus gets down to (poly)basics.

Trafficking of live mammals is considered a major risk for emergence of zoonotic viruses. SARS-CoV-2-related coronaviruses have previously been identified in pangolins, the world's most smuggled mammal. A new study identifies a MERS-related coronavirus in trafficked pangolins with broad mammalian tropism and a newly acquired furin cleavage site in Spike.

Characterization of Pseudogymnoascus destructans conidial adherence to extracellular matrix: Association with fungal secreted proteases and identification of candidate extracellular matrix binding proteins.

Pseudogymnoascus destructans is the etiological agent of white-nose syndrome (WNS), a fungal skin infection of hibernating bats. Pathophysiology of the disease involves disruption of bat metabolism and hibernation patterns, which subsequently causes premature emergence and mortality. However, information on the mechanism(s) and virulence factors of P. destructans infection is minimally known. Typically, fungal adherence to host cells and extracellular matrix (ECM) is the critical first step of the infection. It allows pathogenic fungi to establish colonization and provides an entry for invasio

Bat Employs a Conserved MDA5 Gene to Trigger Antiviral Innate Immune Responses.

Bats are important hosts for various zoonotic viral diseases. However, they rarely show signs of disease infection with such viruses. As the first line for virus control, the innate immune system of bats attracted our full attention. In this study, the Tadarida brasiliensis MDA5 gene (batMDA5), a major sensor for anti-RNA viral infection, was first cloned, and its biological functions in antiviral innate immunity were identified. Bioinformatics analysis shows that the amino acid sequence of batMDA5 is poorly conserved among species, and it is evolutionarily closer to humans. The mRNA of batMDA
